- The Last Farewell is a 1971 song performed by the British - Kenyan folk singer Roger Whittaker. It was written by Ron Webster and Roger Whittaker and was featured in his 1971 album New World in the Morning. It was reissued in 1975 and then peaked at number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the Adult contemporary charts......." and I have loved you dearly, more dearly than the spoken word can tell "
The Last Farewell
There's a ship lies rigged and ready in the harbor
Tomorrow for old England she sails
Far away from your land of endless sunshine
To my land full of rainy skies and gales
And I shall be on board that ship tomorrow
Though my heart is full of tears at this farewell
For you are beautiful and I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
For you are beautiful and I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
I heard there's a wicked war or a blazing
And the taste of war I know so very well
Even now I see the foreign flag a - raising
Their guns on fire as we sailed into hell
I have no fear of death it brings no sorrow
But how bitter will be this last farewell
For you are beautiful and I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
For you are beautiful and I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
Though death and darkness gather all about me
And my ship be torn apart upon the sea
I shall smell again the fragrance of these islands
In the heaving waves that brought me once to thee
And should I return safe home again to England
I shall watch the English mist roll through the dell
For you are beautiful and I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
For you are beautiful and I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
Sitting here with my father who has end stage dementia. The very long last farewell. He used to sing this beautiful song. Now he mostly sleeps through my one hour visit but he does sometimes remember it when he’s awake.
Be strong Claire xxx
Be well Claire. You shall see him again. I’ll promise you that.
Dad died in July last year. We played this song at his cremation and we all sang along. I haven’t been able to listen to the songs I used to play to him during our visits. Not yet. I will some day.
@@clairetbear1 My sincere condolences. I’m a 57 year old man. I’m not an angel but I’m certainly not a demon either. When I was 18 years of age , I was almost killed in a car accident. My memories are very vivid almost 40 years later but the message is still the same. It’s the most peaceful one I’ve ever had. It’s almost indescribable in it’s peacefulness.
I don’t force my thoughts about anything onto anyone, rather I try to help those that suffer in silence. Your post proves this as we both correspond these many months later. I wish I could describe this to you. It’s more than a silent faith. I’ve seen what I’ve seen. I’m just an ordinary man but I’ll assure you… you will see your beloved father again.
In the meanwhile, stay well with your loved ones Claire.
My dad's been diagnosed with alzheimers and I work in the field. My heart is still breaking.
My brother passed away this morning..he loved this song.
Rest in peace dear brother ❤
May he rest in peace
@@randysmith5405 thankyou so much.

R.I.P. Mr. Whittaker.
But the music of Roger Whitaker will last forever.
As a former Royal Navy serviceman this song means the world to me, we played this song on my ship's tannoy as we came back from the Gulf war, my emotions always get the better of me when i hear this classic song.
Respect to you my friend .
Loz Brennan Thank you for serving, Blessings
Serving in US MARINE CORPS as a grunt we've been transported aboard US Naval ships more times than we can remember. This song reminds me of a little miss can be wrong with which I had to leave. I think of her every time I play it

@@alvirosy I'm older than the "both" of you , and l derived great pleasure from listening to this song when I first heard it in the mid 1970's , and I "still" love listening to it !!!! The two of you have excellent taste in music 😌 .
I remember hearing this song on the radio as a kid in elementary school. I never knew what the name of it was. I always thought it was called "For You Are Beautiful" for some reason. This was, and still is, a fabulous song with incredible meaning. I heard Mr. Whittaker just recently passed away. So very sad. Rest In Peace, Sir. You did a great job with this awesome song!
Thanks for all the good music , song with you beatiful voice. RIP condolence to the family
Roger Whitaker has the most soothing and beautiful voice and it never fails to lift my spirits. In appreciation and admiration for an inspiring life.
I had a girlfriend many years ago who loved this song. It is a fine piece of music.
I miss this song, I used to hear it when I was very young... made me want to cry...a beautiful song in 2023
In 1971 Mr Whittaker promised to put the winner of a national radio poetry contests poem to music and record it - this is that song .
Leaving Rhodesia was the hardest thing I have ever had to do. This song will forever be a reminder of that sad day, for she was truly beautiful...
I am sad for you. I hope you find new hope where you are now, and new beauty. Sometimes God leads us through the valley of the shadow so we can find new life.
A great song by the great storyteller. A very talented performer
RIP Roger Whillaker Heaven has now got another beautiful singing voice RIP
This brings tears to my eyes, because my grandfather’s funeral had this song In it.
Rest wel, Roger. Thank you for your beautiful music.
My Dad joined the British army in 1938 and fought in Kenya. While there he married a mixed Kekuyu woman and had two sons. He was then sent to Burma and took a bayonet to the stomach. This was a mortal wound in those days. He survived because he had a bag of army issue sulfa powder and he stuffed his abdomen with it. He was sent back to England and proceeded to try to get his wife and sons. Because she was mixed, policy didn't allow black wives to be brought over. He began to save money to go back and buy a farm. He sent money over as well. He received a letter saying her father had absolved the marriage and forced her into an arranged marriage. She was wealthy due to the money sent and her father had that right in her tribe. His son's were adopted by her brother and he was not welcome. Eventually he married my mother and had 3 girls. He would look so sad when he heard that song. He would leave and come back with red eyes. He lost touch with her and his sons and planned to go look for them but died just prior to the trip. I cry when I hear that song and wish I knew my half brothers.
I’m so sorry for your lose
@@blacktemplarbarachel3387 Thank you!
Bpodd: What a beautiful, but incredibly sad story. Thank you so much for sharing. This has been one of my favourite songs for many years and it always brings a tear to my eye. Is there no way you can trace your half brothers? So sad your dad never found them, but they are a part of you too, and it would be a wonderful thing if you could. Please try, if you can. Take care. x
I wasnt born till '62 but you have to remember all of us of days gone bye have all got special memories of days gone by when we were all happy, today is shit, so we have to lift ourselves up and make the most of it. I certainly do, god bless.
Sorry about that. My grandpa (RIP) was conscripted at Nanyuki ("Kikuyu land") in Kenya by the Brits and was later sent to Burma but mercifully survived the war. Fascinating stuff with sulfa powder- I saw that in a Rambo movie and assumed it was all fiction. The British Army maintains a base in Nanyuki to date and you'll be happy to hear Whites and Blacks hang out liberally nowadays. Hope springs eternal and you can still trace your brothers.
Farewell, sweet prince.
Thank you for the memories
For anyone who's a big fan of the British Royal Navy like I am as an American, this is a must listen.
So incredible the power of this song;
I live in Tucson Arizona

My late dad used to love this song - we sailed out of Suva Fiji in 1974 back to England as Fiji was being handed back to the Fijians ❤️
I still get spine tingles from this song.
Well this hits hard, found a video of my grandad singing this on his 80th birthday. We lost him 3 years ago (as of yesterday) 😢 RIP mate.
My father went to Belfast , in the year 1975 ,and recorded this song on a cassette tape recorder ,since then as a 10 year old this is my all time , top of the pops . World's best song ever .
He had a great voice. My late Mum introduced me to his songs

Never again such a voice! Such songs are made only for such a voice.
A wonderful singer/songwriter. God bless you, Roger. Rest in peace.
Love this song; grew up in the South Pacific listening to it 🌴🌴🌴🌴🌴
Just stunningly beautiful. I first heard this song a over 20 years back and was so overcome by emotion I almost cried. My mind went back to 1966, I was serving with the Marines in Vietnam and was wounded severely and was medevaced to the Navy hospital in Yokosuka, Japan. We had American nurses but also some Japanese ones. One particular Japanese nurse took a liking to me. Lovely. When I was recovered enough to go off base, I started seeing her every day. Took a ferry across Tokyo Bay to Mount Fuji and fell for her and her for me. After 6 weeks, I was discharged and had to leave. Lots of tears. I never saw her again. Sure gave a lot of what I needed during the era, kove and tenderness from a place that has neither. I hear Roger singing this song about the islands and am immediately sent back to 1966. Thought I would share this.
That is really sad X
Thank you.
@@bacsi19461 I bet she still thinks of you like you do her buddy X
Glad you recovered. I've read a couple accounts of US servicemen and Japanese lovers. It could be hard for the woman as she may have been outcast by her family. Sounds like you are a good guy and did right by her.
You might be interested in a book I liked so well I've read it 3 times.

So sorry you lost your love. It must’ve happened many times during the war, and every war.

Roger Whittaker was born in Kenya to British parents. He's best known for his song My Land is Kenya, "so warm and wild and free." But his mother was tortured and his father murdered by intruders so the dream ended. Now lives in south of France.
Omg.💔
Seems to be happening a lot all around the world whenever the apes run amok.
I lived this song!! 1971...HMS Bulwark...we only had 9 days together in Florida...then he sailed away.... Amazingly, a year later, we met again in Greece. What an experience....a memory I have never forgotten....
The first time I heard this song, it was merely a curiosity. Now, I've fallen in love with it---The lyrics and the music paint a mystical place of happiness, sadness and hope. I had no idea this song was even around in 1971. A treasure for the ears, and the spirit.
The way you describe this song is the Best way I find

Beautiful song😍
this song affected me in a profound way when i was a child, my family lived in Alaska, and my parents had grown tired of the cold winters and decided to relocate to Arizona, i was not too happy about this, the thought of leaving my beloved Alaska didn’t thrill me, so we left on the appointed day and had to travel part way into Yukon Canada, turning south at a junction and going back into Alaska to a small port town called Haines. We were to embark on the Alaska state ferry, inland marine highway that would take us along the coast of Ak, and Canada to Bellingham Washington three days later, as we drove up to enter the ship, this Rodger Whittaker song was playing on the radio, and how fitting it was to be embarking on a ship to a far away land at that moment! it was a beautiful vessel called the MV Columbia, she was brand new, it wasn’t the Titanic mind you, at only 418 feet long but to me it looked like a huge ocean liner. such a cool memory, many thanks to Mr Whittaker and the gentleman who sent in that poem.
Took the marine hwy last year. Round trip. Epic.
As I listen to this ,it is a Love Song , he not talking about War , he talking about when he dies
Lordy, I LIVED this song in '71...such memories................
Yes , I know how you feel , despite being only 15 then [ and old Roger being what he was , a balladeer not a Rock Star ] I had a strange affinity to this song - would never have bought it of course , T Rex , Slade , Free , John Kongos [ Tokoloshe Man ] , Cat Stevens etc was more my thing but Roger Whittaker could certainly sing [ see also Stranger On The Shore ] .
While I was watching Challenger The Final Flight on Netflix, episode 3 June, wife of Astronaut Frances "Dick" Scobee
said few days before the rocket launch he walked his wife along the beach not far from Kennedy Space Centre and sang this song to her.

Hear hear
Reminds me of my late dad , he used to love this song as it reminded him of us leaving Fiji in the 1970s back to the Uk
One word... "MAGNIFICENT"!
The story of the song is fairly magnificent also.
He asked people to send poems and made songs of them,
one a week for 26 weeks, if I am not misinformed.
These lyrics were written by a silversmith from Birmingham.
And to his words Roger Whittaker wrote this beautiful melody.
If I can this to my Father & Mother, now all are only memories.
I have loved this song since I was 12 years old. Thank you .Nello Palacios, for remindingme of it!

One of my grandfathers favourite artists, this song played at his funeral and was a perfect send off!
This is one of those great "break the mold" songs from the 70's. I loved pop music as an early teen at that time. Looking back at songs like this, and Hurricane Smith's top 40 hit, expanded my appreciation for music, that I didn't realize at the time.
