Good video I am 71 years old and still ride motorcycle I no longer price Harley-Davidson to expensive too many problems so I took half Harley front wheel rear wheel Springer daughter rigid frame and put a 650 XL Yamaha motor in it and I even put a suicide clutch and it's got a rigid with a strip meal while to figure it out haven't rode bikes in a long time enjoy the video and the Motorcycle I know right is a very difficult one but I am learning thanks for the video old school dangerous but that's all we live
I converted my Roadstar to foot clutch/jockey shift. Thought it was cool but after several rides I realized just how dangerous it really is. After a couple close calls (panic situations) it definitely lost it's novelty. Two legs on the ground is definitely better than one.
Much respect, Saddle Tramp!! That's awesome.
Corey, it's so good to see what you're up to. That bike is definitely personalized to you because who else would be able to figure it out. I guess that means it won't get stolen anytime soon. You be good to yourself. Thanks for Sharing!
Thanks, Craig. I figure the benefit would be if anyone were to go and try to ride off on it, they'd probably kill themselves.
Hope you have a great week. Ride Safe.@@SaddleTrampTV
I've been driving a old pan like that for 40 years , it certainly increases the danger factor !
Very cool mod there Tramp. Reminds me of my early days. I learned to ride on a 42 "45", hand shift foot clutch. But the clutch was a stay put rocker clutch. So a bit different. That was my own bike. I rode everything my friends would let me on. My first ride on a Triumph was a right side foot shift. Same as the early Harley Sportsters, and K models. I learned to adjust to what ever I rode in minutes back in the 50's. Anyway, thanks for sharing your story. Once you get the sequence down you will be able to start that thing with one or two kicks. My old flat head would start on one or two kicks almost all the time. But they only had like 6.5 to 1 compression.
LOL, Okay, now, Cory, you now can be certified. We'll be getting your padded room ready!
Lol
I said "What have I got myself into?!" when I bought my Vmax, for obvious reasons. Never with my Sportster though! Never had a jockey shift, either...
I recently got my first open belt drive on my custom Harley I got a real nice pair of boots with no shoelaces and Away the bars are around the belt it's pretty good the 34-degree degree rake on her took some getting used to going normal speed and so bad but turning sharp real slow was tricky at first because it had been so long since I wrote but we got each other figured out now
so cool, welcome to the club, foot clutch 'n jocky shift, i'm only at 11 minuites, nice ride...
I have a similar setup on my Shovel.
One secret is to make sure your clutch pedal is positioned so your foot can be securely on the footpeg when using the clutch and you just rock the angle of your foot on the peg to operate the clutch. A big mistake is to set up the clutch so your foot has to be OFF the peg to use the clutch, I've seen a few guys do it like that until they learned better lol.
Back on a bike after 20yr absence. Got an old FLH with evo motor. To slow myself down (skill no longer matches old riding habits) I’ve gone with a jockey shift setup and I’m lovin it. I find that I’m totally involved in every ride and every ride is an adventure…whether I want one or not (lol). To slow down the clutch engagement I played a lot with the location of the linkage connection on the pedal. By moving the attachment point closer to the pivot the length of pedal sweep during engagement increased. Took a bit of fiddling about but optimizing the stroke and position of the pedal really made it more fun to ride.
It looks like it was a blessing in disguise when that tree took care of your old garage. I can't even imagine you being able to get this many projects going inside the old place. Sometimes we need a little disaster in our lives so we can keep moving forward. 🤔 Plus, Scotty will have a bigger bedroom next time he visits.😅
I used to have to move bikes out of the old shop just to get things done. Plus Scotty's been here a couple of times already.
I am interested in doing that. I would probably also include a Recluse clutch. I have a friend with a disabled left arm the Recluse clutch seems to work well for him.
I love the ghost rider poster in the back ground David Mann was a awesome artist I always wanted to do the ghost rider as a tattoo on my back
One of you guys sent that to me.
having a foot clutch and jockey shift looks like it sucks to get used to but man is it cool as shit
Takes some practice.
Might try a heel and toe pedal for clutch. Heard they have better control on take off.
Awl man Tramp!!! You’ve out done yourself, once again!!!! This was an awesome video!!! I loved it!!! And obviously so did everyone else!!! Good job and good luck!!! So cool. You’ll be used to it in no time!!!!!
Thank you, Slick!
I love jockey shift.
Even though it's a mismatch of parts, it runs. That's all that matters.
never hurts to try Something new!!!
Agreed!
GOOD JOB BROTHER !!! You will get used to it before long !
👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸⚓️😎
Lets hope!
@@SaddleTrampTV just keep that Kill switch in muscle memory haha
Ive about got my 78 shovelhead together . Its a bastardized ridged with. Swing arm . . Cow pie BDL belt drive. I think im.gonna try jocky shift. But try and keep the hand clutch along with foot clutch .for emergencies. .
looks like fun mate..... job well done cheers
Thanks, man!
Cool man maybe I should do that to mine my linkage is a nightmare
You'll be surprised.
cool! i think ... its my way to ( in future)
Thanks, Andre!
I have to agree with the Misses.
On the topic of losing your mind? Maybe. Or are you suffering from heat stroke?
The idea of an exposed belt, Not for me.
So I have to ask. Isn't riding in traffic dangerous enough without making it more difficult to ride?
I dig your your honesty. I like the fact you don't hide much, even when you don't show us what you do you talk about little lishaps or things that go wrong. I think this was a win. The shifter works better, and all you need to do is get used to the clutch. Awsome content glad I have the time for youtube and can check out your videos again. Keep up the great work
Hey thanks, man. Always good to see you!
Hey Cory Chopperware you should become Chopperware lady lol. Have partys. I do like those old bikes I just do not have the skills to keep one running. Great video man love jockey shift and Open Primary is a bit dangerous but hey that is what makes it cool. My Dad road a foot clutch hand shift on his cop bike as a motor officer
It's not that dangerous. It's only a hazard when you ride with your boots untied or when you shove your foot into it.
@@SaddleTrampTV LOL makes great content. I just keep thinking one day I want to come down south and meet you in person. See the saddle tramp garage and ride a few miles. I still love your channel. You're such an inspiration to me Stay warm keep the great content coming.
@@Supermankev2001 Come on down. We have that spare bedroom for a reason.
@@SaddleTrampTV I think it just might happen LOL
@@Supermankev2001 Right on!
I knew a guy had an old trumpet that he chopped. Man he would remake that bike almost every month,to include paint.
Ive thought about belt drive primary on my electraglide just to quiet down the rattle of the chain. But it aint broke, soooo
The first motorcycle (a 1950 FL) that I rode had a tank shift (shift gate) and a rocker clutch. I also rode a pre-WWII Knuck with a suicide clutch and jockey shift. It took me a little time to get accustomed to that clutch/shift setup. After a few days, actuating the clutch and shifting gears was as easy as falling off a log. I didn't have any real problems except sitting at a stop light or stop sign on a steep hill. I didn't run a front brake. Have fun. Be safe. -- W
Very cool video love the bike
Glad you did this Saddle Tramp. I'm thinking of doing this to my shovelhead. Keep up the good work brother. Make sure you keep the videos coming. I appreciate the fact that there's a fellow believer in Jesus who rides some righteous iron. It goes to show that just because we're Christians doesn't mean we have to be boring. I believe the Lord Jesus would've ridden a chopper if he could have.
Peace Bro.
Aint nothin like a "japanese bike" ..........say no more
Awesome job there brother !!!!!! You have to experiment with different adaptions in order to create your one of a kind build !!!!!! Thanks again brother !!!!! God bless 🙏
Scooter needs his own channel so we can see all the cool stuff he's got going on
1979 you say, heck I was only 11 years old then. Love the sound when you flip back and close throttle.👍🏼
Hahaha man thats awesome 👏 This video makes me so happy actually and almost makes me want to covert my shovel 😅 Luckily though my dad will be doing the jockey shift thing on his own shovel so I'll get some practicing in on that and don't HAVE to convert mine 😏
Also still feel that same sense of joy that I get when my one bike finally starts after a struggle by watching others get theirs going finally after too many kicks hahah
Good vid Corey! Hope you're having fun with the new setup!
It's a blast! The biggest perk is that I don't ever have to worry about someone stealing my motorcycle when it's parked in a parking lot. Even if they do get it started, they'll more than likely kill themselves trying to take off. Lol
@@SaddleTrampTV Thats awesome 😂
Wish I had your old bike knowledge.
I wish I were as smart as some folks think I am.
@@SaddleTrampTV it’s not always the smart it’s the right thing at the right time. I can do a great deal with wood but not everything. I could do gray things with cars engines but age has me at a disadvantage anymore. You are still able and are doing that is the great thing. Thanks for sharing your experience and joys.
I switched to foot clutch jockey last week and have had no front brake for a year or so. The learning curve took a day or two. It’s such a blast to ride and I’m glad you’re doing the same. Thanks for the video bud and have fun.
According to the poster when you have no front brake, it's called a suicide clutch, not a foot clutch. I actually think it's a suicide clutch no matter what, and the shifter is called a jockey shift, not a suicide shift.
I don’t know what poster your referring to but slang for “suicide shift” is just jockey shift. The suicide part is a myth from lurching out into traffic. When in reality your bike just stalls. Idk 🤷♂️ I call it jockey shift.
the suicide part is having no front brake@@zachegelhoff4783
no front brake what a boring and dangerous ride@@zachegelhoff4783
Mad respect to you for going backward. It's a rare few who still operate Jocky Shift Bikes. You are now officially in the history books and one of the OG Harley guys... Might be a couple of decades later, but that doesn't matter. Stay focused and it will become second nature to you. Lean Right when you stop....
Thanks, man!
An old style rocker clutch as mentioned earlier would make it much safer especially with an open primary/meat grinder so be careful getting used to it.
great video! was actually looking to order the same parts for my shovel, how long did shipping take if you dont mind me asking ?
Less than 2 weeks
@@SaddleTrampTV That's quick! Thanks again for the video, perfect timing.
good video!!!!!!!!!!! thought about doing the same, but didn't. Haven't met but if in the area, could I stop by and say hello? safe ridin rubber down
Sure thing
Your shift don't stink
Ain't nothing like a foot clutch , jockey shift!! Kickass man
Except a ratchet top you don't have to think about it as much
IMHO... Id opt for a tank shift... Reaching down is awkward especially in traffic...
But Sweet conversion...
look at it this way// you won't have some one take it unless they ride one..cheers
Yup!
Nice, I'd like to try riding a set up like that. Great vid brother keep them coming, we always enjoy the vids no matter what it's about.
I am running the same set up. If you don’t like the gear level configuration you can weld a 13/16 socket to use as a spacer. Thats what i did and man is it in the perfect location.
Also turn to the handlebars to the left when youre stopping.
I can send pics if you like. Happy to help!
Awesome vids saddletramp👍
You are a glutton for punishment my friend 😅
I guess so
Proud of you drummer, I knew one day you would ride that ole Shovel head grinnin ear to ear!
It’s a good feeling when you realize ,, you have conquered it.
Ride safe and God Bless
I'd try shift on tank like old pans ..rocker clutch ..
Well done 👍👍👍
Just finished watching " Best spring motorcycle rally?"..premiered June 26,2023 and guess who I saw at 1:59 timeline sitting in the lobby listening to something to pass the rainy day?!!! ...with Riding In The Ozarks.....
After 45 years of riding motorcycles that would be confusing 😎👍
Indeed so!
Wanna know the rarest harley of all time? A stock one! They've all been bastardized!
im sure you seen the jocky shifter kit w the clutch lever on the shifter...??
Yeah I've seen that. Kinda strange looking to me, but it works.
Close stock -foot ,,,,Sawn chopper -hands shift 🧐🙂🙃style
Good video and I'm happy to see your shovel undergoing a "devolution."
My first Harley was what was left of a '51 Panhead with the real suicide setup,(rebound clutch pedal, jockey shift, and no front brake,) and it was a kick in the ass to ride
For years I've been wanting to convert my '72 ElectraGlide to a tank shift/foot clutch setup, and since I'm in the middle of restoring it, it's an opportune time.
I've had the bike since 1980, and 6yrs ago I finally warmed up to the Evo enough to buy a '97 WideGlide to give it a break.
Thanks for posting this and ride safe.👍
"A kick in the ass to ride" That's too funny. I like that. Hey man... If you want to that bad, the opportunity is there.
@@SaddleTrampTV
What added to the "kick in the ass" was that it was a rigid, and 3wks after I got it, I had to go to a doctor because I developed a cyst on my tailbone.
No more rigids for me after that.
Yeah, I know I'm a soft ass, but as many miles as I logged in the saddle when I was younger, I needed every advantage I could get.
Ride safe.👍
Bro, I can't even imagine!!😬
Yeah, neither could I til I tried.
Thanks Man. Great vid. Don’t miss those days though. Crowd watching, will she start? Guess I’ll have another beer!
I have no issues with my suicide clutch/jockey shift on my Shovelhead with a ratchet type transmission! It's just a matter of getting use to it. Just avoid up and down hills. 😂🤣
I’m from England and it’s the last thing on earth I would want on my bike… they look great and I have ridden one, but with the amount of traffic on the roads nowadays it’s just too dangerous
It's different, ride it for awhile and see if it grows on ya. If not you can change it.
Shoot ,you got a nice little collection there. I guess it's good to have a bike to just tinker with. I've thought about an open primary and jocky shift set up. But my bike ain't broke so why fix it. I got a Honda needs my attention , so perhaps? Who knows.
Get a 100a switch, you won’t need a celinoid.
I agree with the Mrs.......switching back and forth between your many scooters mite get confusing , causing an accident .... sell that thang and get a panhead if you want a chopper
The brass intake clamps , work for your starting issue . Check them out ...
I thought about doing this on mine, but man, too nervous about it to do it. Fun watching you!
One thing you got to watch out for not just that compression stroke kick to come back on you, but especially with the cow pies you location get a dead kick. We're almost feels like a put the clutch in that kick his ass wants to swim down to the ground on its. And it never happens first kick it's always have you been kicking it 10 times bitching this thing won't turn over and all the sudden.
Watch greasers garage. He has an awesome video all about how to with jockey shift. Maybe help you out. He goes through the process of shifting ,etc.
Never have I and never do I want to ride a suicide shift. Props for making work though. Stay safe.
60 years in the saddle for me but can't imagin not having my to feet near the ground, but nice try whatever makes you happy, hey that lose belt adapt a idler,
why stop there when you can attach spinning razors to the pulley ☠
I think it is very cool. You will get used to it. You have a good head for working things out. Stay safe buddy.
Just be careful. You will get the hang of it soon enough.
For when you just have to make your Shovelhead a bit harder to ride...haha!
I doubt anybody can steal it.
Its old school now. You can always change it back.
My hats off to ya. I had a brother that rode a ridged with a 8 over wide glide, suicide shift with no front brake. 🤣
Rumor has it this guy has a grizzly bear rug in his living room but the problem is it's not dead it's just afraid to move
Just wondering if the Evo is getting any love or is it done for now? Love what you've done with the Shovel, Tramp. Gives it that Old School look. Is the clutch dusting your rear wheel or have you noticed any grit build up from the open primary back there?
Not yet. Haven't ran it long enough to see.
been watching but not comm for a while, but love the jockey stick, cannot wait to see u ride it.
Wear some heavier steel toe boots makes operating the clutch easier and switch it over to ratchet top so you don't have to think about it as much 👍😎
I almost tried to gonthis route because i got leg issues from a bad crash but figured this aint for me thats why they call it suiside shift
Good luck with your jockey shift!
i rode no issues 20 plus years jockey shift .....
Its not a suicide shift if you still have a front brake..
Switch the clutch over to the rocker style its safer jus saying
I ran an open belt drive suicide shift on my shovel for years. I had both ratchet top and manual top at different times, I liked the manual top better because you have a neutral between each gear. A front brake is almost mandatory…
Agreed... Front brake is a must
Is yours one of the '79 "exemptions", meaning it does not have matching frame and engine numbers? Just wondering cause I have one. Thanks!
Yep.
They call ot suicide shift for a reason ❤😂
Love it!! Nothing like riding a jockey shift. Now give us a wheelie video!!! 😂
Coming soon! Only as a blooper though.
That's pretty dang cool 💯🤘
I'll pass on the foot clutch, I prefer both feet on the ground, have a blessed week my friend
I hear ya
Old Mark always has something original to say.
"If we dont have to depend upon God enough to help us, we add danger."
😂
Right? Lol
Just because you can doesn't mean you should.
I'll keep my push-button starter, thanks Cory...haha
Cool shifter though...for now...haha
I hear ya, man. Don't blame you a bit.
I have a 72 superglide with a bdl dry clutch. The lock nut is stuck on the adjustment screw. There is no lock tight I believe it’s cross threaded. Any help is much appreciated 🙏
@@sebastionspray808 Perhaps put it in gear and have someone hold the rear brake while you try to turn the nut off of there.
Hey that's a Great looking set-up.
I'd like to tell you a short story here, I was getting a Bultaco racing bike set-up for a friend one day many moons ago. While I was working on the bike another friend kept ask me to let him ride the bike, my answer was always the same, NO it's not my bike. Finally two things happen at once, I finish the bike, and the owner came in to the shop at the same time.
The other friend (Jeff) was still there, when running up to the owner and begged him to ride the bike, (Richard) said Ok Jeff.
I known Jeff all of his life, and I know he had never rode a Bultaco before, (Bull's have a right foot shifter) and I reminded Jeff of that, he just looked at me and said I Know that. He put the bike in first, hit the gas, and lees than 100 feet later, ran into a Staircase Landing. Completely totaling the front end of that Bike. As I watch this, Jeff was stomping on the gear shifter like a mad man, he had done forgotten what he was ridding.
Cory Man you've got a lot of bikes, So Man don't never forget which one your riding.
Always ride safe my Friend
I've considered that. Thanks
I'll leave the only positive comment I can offer:
Get rid of that floppy kicker arm, and get one of the old style ones the MoCo used since the dawn of time. You'll be glad for it....
....RooDog.....
Had one. Didn't work with my mids. Kept getting in the way.
Nice bro!!! Dang dude u get my gears turnin! Thanks brother. I've actually never witnessed anything like this before. Just started the vid, watching now!
