Spearfishing | Feast or Famine - Final Days Fishing the Tuamotus

  • These were our last few days diving the Tuamotu islands. With resources running low since the supply ship was on holiday, it came down to gathering food for ourselves and honestly, we sucked.
Spearfishing is not an easy sport. It takes a lot of practice and patience. Of course, out here there are many other variables to consider, the biggest being the shark population. So many sharks live in the waters of French Polynesia that it often makes it difficult to actually get the fish on the boat without it or ourselves being bitten by the sharks.
Not only are the sharks difficult to fend off, but you also need to be a very proficient freediver. For most of these dives, we were freediving to 15 meters or deeper for 1:30-2:00 minutes or longer.
Be certain to stay on top of gear maintenance when it comes to spearing. There is nothing worse than losing fish due to gear failure. I learned this the hardest way possible after missing too many shots on some easy fish.
Thankfully we were able to land just enough fish to get by. Maybe not the trophy fish we set out for. But it was still fresh fish on the table each night!

      Glad you enjoyed it!
Yes the sharks are awesome if you’re taking photos and video. Not so great if you’re trying to catch dinner!

Definitely , and they've also demonstrated that they can be remarkably aggressive. I didn't notice if the lemons sharks nictitating membranes were covering their eyes, but they looked like they were setting up for a bite.
