'Round The Block: Driving a 1965 Ford F350 Tow Truck with Elana Scherr and Tom

  • A walk around and drive in our 1965 Ford F350 Tow Truck. Another fine video presentation by Tom and Elana.
    Tom wrote that first part, can you tell? Anyhow, we're trying a new segment, which if it works out, we'll do more of. Basically, one of us holds the camera and the other does the driving and in this case, hood smashing. This is a 1965 Ford wrecker that we got from our friend Brian's dad. He bought it new back in '65 when he owned a gas station in Hollywood. We did minor repairs (brakes, ignition, fluids) and now we just cruise around pretending to be Tow Mater.

    Saw a split rim slice right through a Coke box (vending machine) when I was a younger. My dad owned a Chevron station when I was a kid. I worked there. We refused to mess with split rims. The truck stops were better equipped.
    Love these videos! Always bring back fantastic memories.

    Nice honest truck. It's interesting to see a F350 version which still uses the pre-65 cab and front inner fenders. It also has the 'big truck' four spoke steering wheel. 1965 was the first year for the FE 352. Elana drives that thing like a boss.

    Your right! There are tow truck drivers watching this video 😆. The "Meathooks" you have are dangerous to use now, you can actual pull them straight if your not careful. They make new ones that are forged and made out of better metal BA products or AW direct. You need a set of dollies in case you get something that's 4wd or the front wheels are turned and locked or expect to drop drive shafts if you cant get a set. Also have some wood onboard i.e. 4x4 one about 5' long and one about 4' long. Can help keep the sling and chains off of weak areas of a plastic bumper. If you have any questions or need any technical advice write me back. Look foward to your next video! 😁

    Elana and Tom, you guys are the best! Nice walk around and drive action from the big 352 Ford tow truck. It's so awesome that the weather out there keeps trucks and cars around and functioning pretty much in original form. I built my own tow truck out of a 1929 Ford AA truck with shortened chassis. I built a Weaver Auto Crane style wrecker with a drawbar specific to moving early Ford I-beam axle cars around in my yard. I just did a video on my channel dragging a 1930 Ford AA farm truck around with some wheelie action and everything. Looking forward to more videos!

    Love the sound of the old Ford starter (though not nearly as much as an old Mopar starter) and I like Elana's Converse All-Stars, too. And yes, Tom, we could hear the whine of the transmission in the lower gears... it reminded me of the Ford buses of the early 70's.

  • @zukowski2023
    @zukowski2023 4 года назад +4

    Love old school Holmes wreckers, so now a days you would need a wheel lift to pick up newer cars (there's no bumpers per say to pick up on with the sling and "J" hooks (J hooks go to the rear portion of the front A arm on the suspension or in the case of a rear lift to the rear differential then to the lower hooks on the sling draw bar). In the 70's they came out with lighter front ends on cars so you needed to purchase "specialty bars" which took the place of the J hooks, these looked like capital 'L's" one on each side to the draw bar hooks and these would again go to the lower A arm, but they had a rigid steel bar that ran to the draw bar, on top of these bars you would place an aluminum lift bar that added clearance between the specialty bars and the car's under body so the nose of the car wouldn't touch the sling. Back in those days if you were a good operator you got called out because of your skill and knowledge. Now any monkey can run a tow truck wheel lift (some better than others mind you). This old girl having a 4 ton single line lift capacity (8 tons if your a "real operator" doing a recovery) was the daily work horse for service shops, auto body shops and corner garages all over North America. Please guys, restore this old girl, she will get you into any car show you want... Promise.. Thanks for the share!
    P.S. those wheels are call "split rims" they are now outlawed in most jurisdictions, the ring portion can come off of the rim base and has killed many a careless service station attendant and tire man in the past, so consider upgrading to tubeless rims if you do a restoration. The radiator would be big to handle cooling the motor while working a recovery, PTO off of the transmission to run the crane will warm the engine up quickly, that's also why the fan is so big on that beasty, it's all about "air flow". One final bit, don't ever park that old girl by using the Micro Lock for the brakes, the Micro Lock is intended for use during recoveries only to lock the rear brakes up for pulling (if your not using "scotch blocks" to secure the truck). If parked and used for parking the Micro Lock can bleed off applied pressure and the truck can take off if it's not parked in gear...

    Nice old truck. Those wheels are a split rim. Auto makers stopped producing them some time in the 1970's. I know of a 1972 Ford F250 that had them. They were 16 inch split rim. As tubeless radial tires came about, split rims wouldn't work on that. But they also did pose a danger. If the split ring wasn't on there just right during installation and inflation, the ring could pop off and do serious damage to a person. I knew a guy that told me he saw a service station attendant get killed by one when it popped off and hit him right across the neck. Tire companies did require a cage to surround them during inflation but could still cause injury as a person held the air chuck with tire in the cage.

    Had one same year, model, wrecker, came with Scobie plate that I used. Couldn't have an employee till I put a sling on it. The wheel is a snap or loop ring. A widow Maker was a wheel that sperated in middle that connected by a screw effect, you out each side of wheel into each side of tire, spining them bout a quarter a turn to lock them together, problem was you couldn't see how far you spun them together, the biggest problem was rust that weakened the lock treads, if they were weak and/or not locked be all the way they'd let go unsuspectingly while airing the tire. I had one let go on a old GMC car carrier, the explanation was devastating, it was a 21' bed I was carrying my f-600 wrecker, was stopped at right turn, when it let go it rocked the truck so hard it almost rolled, it was on inside rear that broke the leaf spring and one hanger and tore out brake line and check shock, was in industrial area that brought out folks from every business as far as I could see both sides of the road. If it had been airing on the ground I'm sure it would have gone a mile up without a doubt.

    If you want to get rid of the padlock just drill out the key slot , rather than trying to cut the bolt.
    The wheel rims are a proven design going back before WW2 , the danger is if the rims are heavily rusted or not set right when inflated and should be inflated in a cage or with a chain wrapped around the tire and through the rim ,in case it comes off the chain will keep it captive and use a locking air chuck for that first inflation while setting the bead.

      Regular split rims are the “widow makers” that he says they aren’t. In that case they are split ring rims, which are much less deadly. As opposed to the whole rim being two pieces, the second piece of a split ring rim is the outer bead section.

    I never new of any ford that didn't come with a heater since 1933 standard. and they called J hooks and i'm willing to bet the heater core went to leaking and they took it out and used plugs to cover the holes. my dad drove a 66 f350 with 352 homes bed twin rotating poles. that you had to rotate by hand. it had one pto winch and 3 hand winches one to lower and raise the polls and 2 to lock them down after you rotated them. but it was a 4x4. for years I thought it was his until he quit his job to I guess make more money. but anyway that's one fine truck. and she can drive that thing so you best keep her.

    Seeing single line brake master cylinders scares the crap out of me now, because if you blow any of the flexible brake hoses or wheel cylinders its no brakes time in a 3 ton missile.
