I'm reading a great book called Narconomics. It explains in detail about situations like what El Salvador went through and why they did it.
Now in my personal opinion. Shutting the door on people you don't like or agree with is not good politics. Negotiations can always be done without any deals coming through in the end if you don't like it. As long as you know the situation at hand. You gain new knowledge on what these 'maras' aka gangs want and you can plan accordingly.

@@mabrenz_n5391 you sound very closed minded.
What you stated about the murders and gang violence. It was worse before the agreement with the government. It shows statistically.
As for the why don't they disband?.. that's not how a gang works. It's not a democracy. People can't choose to leave on there own.
Steps are being taken such as prison reform and removing tattoos for free there and setting them up with employment options.
(What I just stated could be in the D.R. and not in El Salvador. I don't remember.)
I'll say again.. ignoring your problems doesn't make them go away.
The misfit economy stands strong because government policy or poor standards of living leaves people with no option other than this avenue.
Listening to them and not making a deal is an option. That is my main point here.

I exist because of the funded death squads of the 80's that overthrew El Salvador's government and who's remnants formed the current gang landscape. My father, a government official of that time, escaped; and the loss of his country, family, and friends had scarred him to his core. He created a family in Canada and decades later we are here, cheering for the revival of the great engine of the El Salvadorian people and praying for the new leaders that they overcome all in the face of so much pain and anguish.

im on the same boat as you bud. my mom and dad also fleed El Salvador when the war started escalating immensely. I live in the US but share a similar story. Neither of my parents will go back because they just arent willing to take the risk. While my mom went to college over there, her and her sister were caught in the middle of a horrendous slaughter that the government committed against its own people while they marched in protest. She and her sister had to hide in a nearby church while the chaos settled down and they said when the dust settled they came out to a horror scene of dead bodies everywhere. How anyone can be ok after that is beyond me and I know my mother suffered because of it. I really hope El Salvador gets the help it needs because I sure would like to visit there someday so I can see where my parents came from and experience my roots firsthand.

I know right? His 'journalism' really frustrated me like he didn't allow the President to talk in the beginning. And his questions were worded in a way to make the guy look like he doesn't have a plan for the country. Like give fair reporting man. Give the new guy a chance to explain thoroughly what he plans to do.
