    The Bog Coat is terrific! Roxanne Richardson is exploring sock knitting through the ages, and has made a sock from a pattern from a pair found on another bog body. It's fascinating to see how these garments were worn and repaired. Clothing was such a valuable commodity up until relatively recent times. I also love your new hair do!

    • @NotQuiteEnoughYarn
      @NotQuiteEnoughYarn  Год назад +1

      Thanks Mairead. You are right - we used to spend so much more of our income on things such as clothing and food, and so they were valued much more highly and were considered less disposable. Fascinating how things change. Thanks and take care xx

    Love the bogcoat. In fact, I love it so much that while listening to your podcast I hunted down the relevant EZ book with the pattern; pulled a bunch of the fingering weight yarn that I have lying around from my experiments dyeing with the plants in my yard (the colors suggest that they may have been in a bog) and I'm knitting a swatch. You are inspirational, thank you.

    I absolutely love your version of the bog coat & mittens! I've made a bog jacket before as well. Mine started out as a blanket and I just loved the garter stitch that was being created with 2 strands of scraps of sock yarn that I decided it needed to be a sweater. To that end, I cast off, then cast back on when it came time to do the sleeve. I then worked them across wrist to wrist with short rows, to narrow at the wrist a bit. I followed Elizabeth Zimmerman's suggestion for shoulder shaping with false seams. This is one of the very few sweaters that fit my shoulders perfectly because I was able to measure and put the shaping exactly where it needed to be for me. I didn't do any neck shaping, just a cast off and then back on for the remainder of the flat shape. Because of that I just created a little stand up, mandarin style collar to keep the wind off my neck, but not something that would flop around and get in the way. My sweater is very oddly shaped, as it's cropped sort of like a bolero, overly long, narrow sleeves (so I could cut cuffs off and resew as they wore out) and the little mandarin collar. But it works great for me. It's short enough that I don't sit on it and pull the shoulders back while working, high enough collar to keep neck warm, long enough sleeves that aren't too wide to work in, and it's just a bonus that it contains bits of all the socks and other sock weight projects that I've done for years. Like a nice memory style hug 🙂. I recommend the bog coat for absolutely anyone. I think I like it also because any modifications can be tried out in sort of a muslin fabric mockup, before charging into knitting or crochet. I also think that I want to make myself a quilted bog jacket from some of my quilt block leftovers.
    Leslie, you always inspire me to go off my own way in my knits! I love your combinations of yarns, colors, etc. It's just so darn fun! Thank you for sharing part of your life. Take care & hugs.

    Hi Lesley
    Firstly, thank you so much for my pattern. Took me a while to narrow it down, but that's Ravelry's fault for hosting so much gorgeousness! 😇
    We need singing!!!
    Love the new dressing gown. My late Mother in Law always called them House Coats. No idea if they are did items. Sorry mad ramble tangent!
    Well done on ALL the spinning. You have achieved some usable yarn from the pink bat, so it's a win!
    Hope Dad is doing ok. Have a fabulous November. xxJane 🐑🌈

      @NotQuiteEnoughYarn  11 месяцев назад

      Hi Jane. Thanks for taking part in the MAL - I know what you mean about too much choice!
      I've heard dressing gowns called house coats, too. I guess it makes it sound more like a "busy" garment than a "just going to bed" garment. All rambles welcome here.
      I am very pleased with the spinning and my latest (to be shown this month) is, I think, my best yet. Who knew that by practicing, we could get better at something? Now, where did I put the piano...
      Take care, thanks so much and love to you and yours xx

  • @Janet-ov7zx

    I do love your bog coat. All the colors work so well together and flow together so cohesively. Try not to be too hard on yourself about the chain plying. My first attempt, I somehow got my right hand, which was holding the loop open and pulling up the yarn thru the loop, completely hog tied. My fingers looked like roped calf legs at a rodeo, all tied together in a bundle of tangled yarn. Chain plying does get a bit easier with repeated practice. I have not had to cut my hand out of yarn tangles again. Take care, and use your time and energy to do what makes you happy this festive season! harpingJanet

    But I looked forward to the singing! I have told you I spin to cope with strong feeling...may need to get more alpaca as 12 fleeces won't cover the current state of affairs. We have had nights down to -4 C already.Very happy to just stay in my little bubble as people are getting sick again here. Do hope you show me some Christmas dec later on.

      Hi Cheryl. I will still record Christmas things, just not upload everyday - it's a time thing, this year. Hope you manage to avoid the sickness. Take very good care xx

    Love the bog coat. Especially love your use of color! Where on the So Coast are you located?

    I loved your London haul! What is the number of the Uneek colorway? Thank you for your podcast, which I'm sure takes a lot of time you could use knitting.

    So often I knit the neckband one size smaller than the body. I always find the necklines are too big when the designer scales the pattern up

      Good suggestion - yep, the scaling of a pattern is the hardest part. Thanks and take care xx
