@@Dalekscientist hah thats funny
Oh yes! That would've been awesome!
Double the sin count!
@@omarreid9831 That's the only thing, we'd see it coming if the length of video is double the normal Cinemasins run time, unless they did a normal run time but got to the end of the movie around the halfway mark at 10 minutes, but even then us viewers may see that he's going to repeat sinning the movie from the beginning if we're already to the big party where everyone's bidding on Phil only 9 minutes into the video
Opening credits: "why look at the clouds, why not show us Pittsburg"
7 second transition scene "why are you making us look at pittsburg"
Pittsburgh has an h at the end and I'm cancelling you for offending my city
Anthony (Th3Birdman) is going to have a field day and include this fact if he chooses to sin CinemaSins' _Groundhog Day_ video, like when Jeremy complains something is explained but also complains about no explanations given. >.
Exactly.
Hahaha!
@@DareToBeDeviant i'm not even 5 minutes in and i'm like wtf th3birdman better do this one's
There's a fun theory that Ned Ryerson is the one who causes the time loop. He inserts himself in Phil's day no matter what Phil does, and he ends the time loop once Phil buys insurance from him.
hahahahahaha!! I love this theory! BING!!!!!
Some salesmen are really pushy.
That theory's a DOOZY!
That's a bit like the STTNG story where the crew needs to play along with the plot of a pulp novel to escape the hotel. They succeed once they win enough at the table to buy the hotel.
@@magicmulder "The Royale"...that unpassable revolving door sure can drive you mad if you think about it too much :p
"What are the chances that this radio station is playing 'I Got You Babe' at the same time on consecutive days?"
As someone who listens to the same radio station on the same drive to work every day, I can tell you that the chances are very, very high.
The radio station we listen to has _"No repeat work days"_ where between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday they don't play the same song twice.
That doesn't stop them from repeating the same songs, in the same order, on *each* of those days though...
This. I used to listen to Heart 80's every morning on my drive to work and it was mainly just a different arrangement of the same songs.
They even explain it a few seconds later when one of the DJs is like "Hey you played this yesterday" and the other is like "Well it's a great song!"
Also in art lessons at school my teacher put the radio on for us and I don't know what station it was but there were a few songs they played almost every single day
There’s more to it than that. “I Got You Babe, I Got You Babe”... repetition in the lyrics. When the loop breaks, the chorus in the song has ended before the DJs start arguing. It’s symbolic of where Phil is.
Phil's just conditioned to wake up when he hears the song. He's been doing it for decades. I wouldn't be surprised if he's got some permanent trauma associated with it.
My favorite fact about this movie was that Harold Ramis was aware of Bill Murray's tendency to burn out during production, so he actually filmed the days in reverse, with the end scenes being while Bill was still fresh, and the later scenes being when he was in full asshole couldn't care less mode. Made the transformation all the more believable.
I didn’t know that .. thanks for the info . That is a cool piece of trivia
Where did you find this? Could you show me the link?
now that's what i call a fun fact!
Burn out while making millions and being completely pampered! Hmmm...
@@Stevesautopartsify Just because you are making millions doesn't mean you aren't getting bored or exhausted.
The point of the old man dying bit was that he tried everything to save him, but nothing worked, the old man dying was a constant regardless of his actions (kind of showing that he can’t control everything, so he’s not a god). The point was never to save him, but to give him one last good day before he goes.
I always figured Phil was stuck in the loop for thousands of years. It's the only way he could learn so much about every detail of everyone in town plus mastering all the various skills he learns.
40-50 years
You would expect a person stuck in that time loop for thousands of years would just go insane. 40-50 is still ridiculously. With the resources he has, especially on a holiday, it's amazing how he was able to learn so much.
@@thebestnavigator7766 Harold Ramis said 10,000 days ala the Buddha thing in an interview. Can probably find it on youtube.
@@BrianD0313 Pretty sure he did go insane. Even then, the loop didn't end. There were probably a few cases where he spent the whole day laying comatose in bed. At some point, he got over it, got up, and spent time learning something new.
@@jardex2275 This version is way darker, I love it
I never noticed the lack of frosty breath. Love this movie!
You can't see his breath because it was filmed in, like, summer or something and it was 30 out and they were all dying in those winter clothes.
Or something along those lines, but it was not winter and it was not cold
Maybe frosty breath doesn't show up under the intense lighting.
@@MostlyPennyCat So it was easier to fake all that snow than to film in winter?
@@MostlyPennyCat So I suppose they film beach-movies in winter, and the fake-tan hides that everyone is turning blue in their skimpy swimwear?
Maybe the wind whips away people's breath befor it can steam up.
The scene with the groundhog driving the truck and Phil saying “Don’t drive angry” is one of my favorite moments in cinema history. I can’t help but burst out laughing whenever I see/hear it.
The groundhog looks so pissed😄
It's not bad for a quadriped.
side of your eye, side of your eye
I remember audible cheers in the movie theater when Phil punches out Ned.
As opposed to inaudible cheers...?
Your old
Thank you for making feel young again by not being old enough to remember when this movie came out.
It's NED... REYERSON 😂
@@dcul8812 A fist pump and "mouthing" YES would be at least one example of an inaudible cheer.
If the Sin Counter goes outside and sees its' shadow, then it's six more weeks of sins! **DING**
Well put xD
Being in TV news, it's actually common sometimes for a producer to be on-scene, especially for a big event like that. You'll be surprised how many things can go wrong or it's just really good to have the extra help for a big coverage event.
God, I always burst into tears each time the movie gets to the section where Bill Murray's character starts to spend time with the homeless old man. I'm tearing up just thinking about it...
Same here. It's when the good deeds went from checking karma boxes to getting real with humility and learning the intrinsic value of doing something right for no reward. i think for many, myself included, charity and good deeds feels good, so there is an element of selfishness in the act. This couldn't be more obvious when you see a celebrity talking about their "work" or "organization" because it's clear they want to publicity.
Good charity begins with anonymity and progresses to work that may not result in success, but is worth trying if you can handle repeated failure emotionally. I think it's apt this is represented by a medical condition which progresses to death, because I imagine this what physicians must go through as they mature in their practice.
“Sometimes people just die.”
“Not today.”
That and the two scenes that follow may be the most painful moments in the film, precisely because for the first time, Phil realises he can’t do everything or save everyone even with his daily reset.
Same, I cried at the scene in THIS video.
As a 7 year old kid when I saw that for the first time it made me understand some things cannot change. That scene will always hit hard.
Groundhog Day has my favorite message: That every day is another chance to get it right.
Accept it's not the same day everyday
@@scannaunderscore1 lol. Speak for yourself
@@scannaunderscore1 some people just dont move
There’s a better message. Phil “succeeds” when he stops trying so hard to better himself. By the end it is Rita who asks him for a coffee, who “buys” him, who wants to be with him - what a contrast from trying to manufacture the perfect day! The latter for which Jeremy and co rightly deduct a sin - you can’t plan the spontaneous, as Phil tried to do on the second attempt to kiss Rita in the snow.
@@psifla99 😂not a better message for me, but to each his own message.
Well that if there is no tomorrow? There wasn't one today. -best line ever
"Punxsutawney and death are not the only options." You've never been to Punxsutawney.
True that.
Also a sin for suggesting staying in Harrisburg if he was trying to get to Pittsburgh.
The town worships the groundhog because they secretly know it's a master of time and space manipulation.
The Groundhog is secretly a lovecraftian old god.
I don't know, I went last year. It was a record year with 40,000 people from all over the world. A couple weeks after we got back my wife and I got sick. It was so hard to breathe. Even though I work for a hospital system it took until late May before I could get an antibody test. It was negative for Covid but I still believe I had it.
@@wkm001: Not to be callous or nothing, but that's what you get for travelling during a pandemic. Staying home saves lives.
The groundhog was the original keeper of the Time Stone before The Ancient One obtained it.
So is the groundhog The Doctor?
Another sin to consider - Phil says that he always wakes up “without a dent in the fender”, meaning his body is exactly the same as the first day. In order to properly play the piano or use a chainsaw, it requires small muscle and bone training. It’s not just in “your brain”. There is somatic visceral strength and dexterity needed to properly perform those actions. If he “reset” every day he would lose that strength. Like calluses for playing guitar. You can’t grow those in one day.
This has always been my biggest hangup with the movie. That, and the “he’s my student” line, considering Phil would obviously have absolutely no reason to go to a lesson anymore when he is already great at the piano and could be doing good deeds for that time. There are numerous implausibilities in the movie, but that line just sticks in my craw for some reason.
Unless--UNLESS--the dexterity built is the first sign of the time loop starting to thaw. He's starting to make genuinely good use of it, so in subtle ways he doesn't change as much.
While that it is true that your body also undergoes minute changes, that doesn't mean it is absolutely necessary for your body to undergo those changes to be able to do the thing at all.

I can't remember the exact percentages, but Punxsutawney Phil has actually been wrong more times than he's been right. I think he's somewhere in the high 30's low 40's range.
he's still doing better than CinemaSins
Don't believe the anti-Phil propoganda.
That's why I trust Staten Island Chuck! Bonus; he likes to bite mayors of NYC
I would question any statistics on accuracy.
The "predictions" are intentionally a "six of one, half-a-dozen of the other" kind of situation. Groundhog Day is roughly six weeks before the spring equinox (i.e. the start of spring) and "just around the corner" is vague and inspecific enough that it can be read as "about a month and a half." So any levels of accuracy are, themselves, misleading.
Pfft. You can use statistics to prove anything. 40% of all people know that
"Everything wrong with groundhog day in 6 more weeks or less"
Missed title opertunity.
As a Pennsylvanian, I can confirm it is true what they say about Pennsylvanians.
We have detected a good old patron of cinemasins

Before watching this video i’m really hoping he sinned Phil walking into the shower and then turning the water on
He did.
You got your wish!
It's even more egregious because it's supposed to be cold to the point of snow so the water in the pipes would be really cold and it'd take the heated water however long to reach his room. Even if he hadn't pointed the hose directly at himself like a yutz he'd still be standing in there for a good while waiting for the water to heat up and freezing his nads off.
I know right! That’s inhuman!
Wait, people turn the water on BEFORE walking into the shower? Enjoy flooding your bathroom.
Let's talk about the bartender who shook his head at Phil one of the nights he was there with Rita. From his vantage point it's just two people having a conversation, nothing there that warrented a headshake. Either he was in on the time warp or he had some neck problems.
Clearly the black magician behind everything. He's just laughing and smiling all the time.
I think it's just his reaction as he sees through the heavy flirting happening. He does the same later when Larry poorly tries to get Nancy.
I think as a bartender. He's saying so much BS from guys trying to pick up girls. He could just extinctively see right through Phil. Or that he's God and he's the one causing Phill to relive the loop. Flip a coin coin.
*Phil: I've been stabbed, shot, poisoned, frozen, hung, electrocuted, and burned.*
One sin off!
One Rasput-sin off?
What's the difference between shocked and electrocuted?

As someone who worked over nights for over 5 years I can guarantee that radio stations do play the same song nearly every day at the same time.
Saturday Night shifts... the radio... always... always, ALWAYS played nothing but DISCO. I got so sick of Blame It On the Boogie and Boogie Night... I almost CHEERED when they played Sexual Healing at, like, 4 AM. It at least meant I was getting new songs being played.
@@CatMuto i just started listening to NPR
Our radio plays the same 10 songs every day like 50 times in a row, and every once in a while, the same song twice in a row.
I agree. When I worked security. Listening to the radio. I really picked up how much would you just playing the same thing over and over and over.
I still laugh when I think about how beloved this movie is. It's has a guy who commits suicide multiple times while we laugh, he is unhealthily obsessed with a woman to the point he knows her entire life story from the experience. Anyone find that creepy? Still love it and is a great movie.
As Rita says, it depends on how you look at it. And optimism is no bad thing. Especially not now, when we really need it.
The character phill is surely a creepy dick but it adds flavor to the movie nonetheless
@@o5-72 If Phil wasn’t a prick the movie wouldn’t be so appealing. The message the film sends out is simple - if you want a happy ending, or happy moments, you’ve got to earn it/them. The turning point comes for him when he stops trying too hard to make things happen.
I mean dude the guy was stuck living the same day for 10 years he was bound to do some creepy shit
@@psifla99 The turning point comes when he stops doing good because he thinks it will help him get out, and starts doing good just because it seems right.

Also, thanks! :D
It's also Phil's goofy smile when he says the line, quality!
I don’t understand the sin removal for “well, my father was a piano mover so...”
Well his Father is a fucking Piano Mover as a European I'll remove all sins for that alone
Because it's one of the funniest lines ever.
Osmosis joke 😂
About the boy falling from the tree, he breaks his leg cause you can see him in the Hospital scene with his mother.
I'm mildly disappointed the Sin Counter didn't reset every time the time loop started again.
I always wondered what would've happened if he made himself and coworkers stay up all night in the same room, then leave immediately in the morning. Would this day be the new loop if so? Or at 6am would his coworkers instantly teleport back to their rooms and wiped memory? Or would the loop force them to fall asleep? Bugs the hell out of me every time I watch this movie
Which poses the question, is 6am even relevant? We assume it is, but perhaps that's merely when he wakes up because of the alarm? The loop could actually occur at 4am, or whenever. Or is the phenomena somehow preventing him from staying awake so he can't observe the flip? There are lots of things which don't make much sense, but then, time travel plot writing rarely does if one properly delves into what we're shown. :D

Much like how he learned he couldn’t force Rita to love him, the old man taught him that even if he was all-knowing, he wasn’t God. He’s human and he’s fallible. He wasn’t able to save the old man, but he was able at least give him some joy on his final day
Someone else commented that you can see the old man after the time loop stops.

It always bugged me that when Phil runs out of the house quicker than before, he still runs into Ned at the exact same spot.
Ned just really wants to sell him insurance, don't ya know

Didn't we learn anything from that true story 'THE TERMINATOR'? You can't stop judgment day....
"The old man is still dead, right?"
It could be that on the perfect day, Phil _did_ rush him to the hospital.
Or Phil finally accepted the reality of death and end-of-life as part of the natural cycle.
Phil learns he can't change everything, even though he tries his damndest.
If the loop had started a weke prior, he might have pulled through.
Similar to the same scene in Scrooged, actually.
The old man lives
@Brian Cairns he’s at the party. On the last day. He’s very unassuming. They don’t really highlight him but he’s there.
@@TemmiePlays Indeed, and that's part of the plan. If he learned he could achieve any goal he wants, winning her heart wouldn't be that much of a life-changing experience, it would just be one of his games.
Agreed. The old man taught Phil that there were limits to his powers. He was a God, but he was not able to change everything.
I always thought it was weird how on the final day the whole town is friendly with him and knows who he is. As far as they know, they've never met this man before in their life!
Maybe it is supposed to reflect how his more positive attitude creates positive feedback loop with others' attitude toward him? I know I'm inventing excuses now, but it fits the main theme of the movie.
Just a theory, but maybe there's a tiny bleed off of the previous days into other people, so a sort of residual karma builds up. That or it's a continuity error! :)
Maybe they are just that hard up for a traveler who isn't a total butthead that they remember he is the nice guy?
@@randomnobodovsky3692 I like your idea!
I thought it was supposed to show that it's finally "tomorrow", and they are simply remembering him from the previous day. Which they wouldn't/couldn't have up until then.

It really is close to being the perfect movie. Deep, but not pretentious. Entertaining if you want something light, emotional if you want something deeper.
The loop doesn't start at 6am, that's just when Phil wakes up and notices that the day has started again. The loop is also going while he's sleeping.
We don't actually know when the loop starts, we only know that it happens sometime after midnight and before 6am
I took it as it starts at 6:00 a.m. because that's when Phil gets up to start the day. The loop revolving around Phill. Nothing significant about the time. If he had started the day at 7:00 a.m. when he first got there. Then the loop would have started at 7:00 a.m.
It does start at exactly 6am, he stays up one night until 5:59am in the movie but just wakes up again.

Honestly, I can't stop thinking about what Phil will do after the looping day. He's lived 10 years of his life knowing everything that will happen, wouldn't that take a huge toll on your mental health suddenly having everything be completely different?
That would be good material for Groundhog II.
I agree that Phil wouldn't have just fell asleep on that last night with Rita... but I also think they wanted to audience to be %100 sure that he loved her and didn't just want to try to sleep with her again. I live 10 minutes from Woodstock as we ditched high school to head to the set are we were picked as extras!
Surprised that yours is the only reference to Woodstock I found in the comments :D
Ontario?
From now on, you need to upload this video every day
Didn't you already sin this movie on February 2nd of this year? I'm confused.
Maybe you are in a loop as well
@@MausOfTheHouse that's the joke
@@MausOfTheHouse r/whooosh
Wait... didn't I already do that?
Dun dun dun xD
How the fuck is this comment here from 14 hours ago?
Words to Live By:
"Don't Drive Angry!"
The old guy portion has always warmed..... and broke my heart. 💜
The old man who keeps dying represents the idea that Phil can't change everything.
The sin off for the "you say this is your first lesson?" part is hilarious
Why?
Yeah I went to the comment section to try and understand why he did that lol
@MigoSuave please say why he removed the sin
I think he just likes the piano mover joke.
@@chandl34 what’s the joke?
“Vaguely threatening Jeopardy questions”😂😂😂
that should have been a sin off
Perfect timing it's Groundhog Day
Although 2020 felt like a real life groundhog day scenario
Haha 2020 bad.
Throughout the numerous times I’ve lived today repeatedly day after day, this is the one point I look forward to.
"You little brat! You have *never* thanked me!"
Pop culture reference that isn’t a sin of the film cliche
yes but no matter Birdman or Jays valid points Jeremy is still my go to No.1
@@TregMediaHD lol groupie behaviour much?
@@Kentrc11 go lay down before you overstrain your brain pal.
@@TregMediaHD That is sooo what a groupie would say. I'm so sorry that Jeremy senpai hasn't noticed you today. Just hold your life-size pillow tighter in the closet when there's time.
lol I can keep going with this, but I'm done teasing. It was funny.
@@Kentrc11 what are you waffling on about? ,, are you drunk or just an idiot? .. get some sleep bro !
18:15 - He meant the loop.... The loop was a ”long day”
About the groundhog being calm when Phil was driving away with it: apparently the animal they were actually working with got super mad and bit Bill Murray at one point...
Was going to add this comment. It's mentioned in the director commentary. Final shot of the scene the animal got angry. Poor Bill
There should be a sin for Chris Elliot's talents going to waste in this film. He plays a throwaway cameraman when he's capable of doing something like Ned Ryerson (no offense to Stephen Tobolowski, who is a magnificent Ned). Also, sin off to Stephen Tobolowski who absolutely kills it in this film.
Yeah, that's like the only major flaw with this movie. And it's weird because the film almost feels like we're supposed to see his character as lesser to Phil, as seen when he fails at the bachelor auction at the end. What the heck is supposed to be "wrong" with him?
@@SlyDante 1. He is not that handsome 2. He is not popular like Phil 3. nobody from the city knows him
He just had no chance
I thought the same thing.. at least refer to the "Strong hand" in the out takes..
I know they wont but they should bust out Cabin Boy.
@@SlyDante I agree, and cinemasins brought up the Nancy issue that she never gets her due, and gets just a one night stand. I think it would have been great if they solved these two problems together and had Larry and Nancy fall for each other at the end of the day. That would’ve been way more wholesome.
Chris Elliot is an underrated comedic actor.
Marty McFly - Hey, I've seen this one!
Cinemasins - What do you mean 'you've seen this.'? It's brand new.
Bill Murray - *slams fist on Jeremy's head*
I’ve been waiting for 3 years for this video. I can sleep in peace tonight.
Damn You Cinema Sins! My partner won’t watch a movie with me anymore cos I sit there dinging and sinning it! That’s what I get for binge watching your videos.

You should see me watch my favorite: Convoy. I could never watch with other people and NOT commentate everything wrong with it LOL
It is contageous. Watching any movie when someone does something improbable, or jist a dick move, prompts me to say "Yeah, that's a sin right there" or its shorter form...."Ding!"
The old man doesn’t die in Phil’s final day. He’s one of the people that shows up at the end with his family. Ridiculous, but it’s true.
I never knew this! I’ll have to be on the look out for it when I do my annual watch tonight
I've heard people make this claim but I've never seen anything to suggest it's true. Do you have a link to still from the film that shows this? Is it during the big party scene, and if so can you point to the time stamp where he appears?
ruclips.net/video/k0fvSiRgKTQ/видео.html
They actually made a sequel to this in the form of a VR game. You play as Phil's son going through a similar loop.
On one of the loops, you learn that the old man did die, and Phil painted a mural to commemorate him.
@@jardex2275 That's what I was lookin for
@@blupunk01 its rumors and scuttlebutt, the man dying is a clear sign that Phil isn't all powerful, and he learns compassion without reward.
Also, on his first repeat Groundhog Day, Phil breaks the pencil in half and sets it in front of the alarm clock. The next day it's back in one piece. We never see the pencil by the alarm clock again after that, although we should see it every day. What happened to the Pencil??? lol
Bro that's crazy, I JUST went to check if there was a Cinema Sins on this movie and it came out 5 minutes ago
As to the groundhog being sedated in the driving sequence ... I seem to recall Bill Murray mentioning somewhere that the groundhog actually bit him a couple times during filming.
The scene before Phil drops the toaster in the tub shows him going to down to get it from the breakfast room and he interacts with that lady. That’s why she said “omg”
"So, EAT ME, movie I love!" 🤣🤣🤣 Absolutely hilarious.
Day 7 of asking for a “Everything wrong with 17 again” video
There’s nothing wrong with “groundhog’s day” for many reasons...
It’s an original story
It’s got Bill Murray
It’s funny
It’s interesting
It’s inspiring and makes you want to be a better person
There’s a lot of great one liners...
Its kinda inspired from Richard Lupoff's short story "12:01 PM”.
1973
No movie is without sin. And there's no such thing as an original story. We've been telling stories for 300,000 and the basic plots for them have all been done. It is a great movie though, something Jeremy also says. You'd know that if you watched the video.
As a western Pennsylvanian, I enjoyed some of these geographical jokes and reference. Also, I like how he tries to question Pennsylvania's weather when Pennsylvanians questions Pennsylvania's weather. Also also, most Pennsylvanians wish February 2 was groundhog hunting season. 😂
I have to give you a sin for saying, "Charge your Phone" in a movie where payphones are still a thing. It's charge your pager.
Nah, those took double AAs, and landlines were also a thing as well.
The first flip phone came out in 1989 and the Nokia 1011 in 1992
I’m pretty sure that was the joke...
@@celeboria I member the late 90s. Not to many cell phones but there were pagers, beepers, and palm pilots. Not many people "charging" back then.
I thought Ramis said he was in the loop for 10000 years.
i read the same thing but it was 10,000 times he lived that day, not 3,650,000 days.
@@thehouseofgator8993 Hmmm..... looks like that works out to around 27 years.
The only sin here is acting as if Groundhog Day isn't a perfect movie.
