Thanks to you guys i am now gonna have to complete my Thin Lizzy collection. It's amazing to think that if Phil Lynott could have taken a wee rest. He would have seen how his discography is pure classic.I miss the guy so much.

My all time favourite band. Saw them 4 times. Black Rose, Chinatown, Renegade, and Thunder & Lightning tours. First one was 12 years old, had crap seats but one of the Glasgow Apollo's friendlier bouncers moved me and my pal into the 2nd row in the circle. Last show was mental, there was so many people outside they let them in and filled the aisles in the stalls. Bouncers were not letting people move forward at front of stage and Phil stopped, threatening to leave if they didn't leave the audience alone.
My favourites - Johnny The Fox and Fighting. Least - the exact same as Steven's. Wildcard - Vagabonds, not perfect but has some great stuff not least the title track and Little Girl In Bloom.

looking forward to this. only saw thin lizzy once on the jailbreak tour. great show. had the chance to meet phil and what a great guy. i went to a radio station where he was doing an interview and wanted him to sign my lizzy albums. he was somewhat shocked that i had the shades of a blue orphanage album as we were in philadelphia and didn't think fans here knew the early work. he graciously signed my albums and said if i brought them to the show he would have the guys sign them. i also had i think fighting and jailbreak. ( still have the albums). he also said he would give me one of his books of poetry. well since i worked at the theater where the show was i was able to get the albums backstage before the show and they were signed! sadly the book of poetry didn't appear but i am sure it was just and oversight etc. anyhow great memory of meeting phil and seeing the band back in the day.

UK Tour '75 is absolutely fierce. Before this CD came out I thought Live and Dangerous was the ultimate Thin Lizzy live album...then I heard UK Tour '75 and was blown away. A bum note here and there, an out of pitch vocal is what you heard when you went to see these bands in concert...certainly when I went to concerts. I'm glad this CD finally got a little love.

All time great band & discography - the later years have grown on me (especially the Sykes stuff) & the real early material with Eric Bell...Still for me nothing beats Black Rose due mainly to one Gary Moore, that's always my TL #1:
    1. Black Rose (especially the expanded edition with add'l demos)
    2. Chinatown & Fighting - very different bands but both great in their own way
    3. Vagabonds Of The Western World & Nightlife
    4. Jailbreak - the one I heard first (like many/probably most)
    5. Bad Reputation
    6. Thunder & Lightning
    7. Renegade & Johnny The Fox
    8. Shades Of A Blue Orphanage
    9. Self-Titled
Others: At The BBC (wonderful set from '72 through the mid 80's), BBC Radio One Live, Boys Are Back In Town Live At The Sydney Opera House October 1978 (smokes - with Moore), Killers Live, Life Live, Live And Dangerous, Live Chicago, Still Dangerous (LIve At The Tower Theater), The Man And His Music Vol II, New Day (early 70's maxi single), One Night Only, The Peel Sessions, Rock Legends (great demos), Rockers, UK Tour '75, Whiskey in the Jar (early compilation)...Lynott's got some great solo albums with/without Grand Slam...Brian Robertson's solo Diamonds And Dirt is good...Black Star Riders have 4 very good albums & Wild Horses have a couple

  • @awesoanimations1974
    @awesoanimations1974 11 месяцев назад +2

My top 2 Thin Lizzy albums are Black Rose and Jailbreak. Jailbreak is kind of a given; great production, great songs, and one of the greatest closing tracks of all time. Black Rose isn’t as clear a choice for favorite, but it has a few things going for it. I love Gary Moore so his playing on this album is a big plus for me, and I think every single song on it is at least an 8/10, with songs like “With Love,” “Róisín Dubh,” “S&M,” and “Waiting for an Alibi” pushing 10/10’s.
My bottom 2 Lizzy albums are Nightlife and Thunder & Lightning. Now I don’t dislike either of these albums, they just appeal to me the least of the studio Lizzy catalog. Thunder & Lightning is a great, heavy, metallic album… but it’s not what I really want from Thin Lizzy. I love the first half of the album (“Thunder & Lightning,” “This is the One,” “The Sun Goes Down,” and “The Holy War”), with “The Holy War” being a top 10 Lizzy song for me. But the second half of the album is not fantastic in my opinion. “Bad Habits” and “Heart Attack” in particular are probably both in my bottom 10 Lizzy songs because one is a bit too Pop Metal and the other is very dark and depressing in a way that just reminds me of Phil’s death. And Nightlife is just kind of directionless and again, it doesn’t really feel like a Thin Lizzy album. There’s not a lot of memorable material from Nightlife in my opinion, but “Philomena” is a phenomenal song that often brings a tear to my eye.
My wildcard is Vagabonds of the Western World. My god, what an album! And it never gets the recognition it deserves. I’m a sucker for power trios, so Thin Lizzy’s time as a power trio is one of my favorite eras of the band. I love Phil’s more aggressive, gravely vocal tone and Eric Bell’s bluesy, rocking’ leads. “Mama Nature Said” kicks the album off and really brings the hard rock sound into the band for the first time. “The Hero and the Madman” follows, starting with a fun, silly little narration of a story (“…and by way of, uh, rope ladder, he tippy-toed up to where his woman was!”), and goes into a Psych-Blues Rock song with a great solo. “Slow Blues” is a cool little funk rock track, and it’s followed up by “The Rocker,” a powerful song that showed Lizzy’s heavier side. The title track starts side two, and it’s my favorite song on the album. I love the way the song builds until it explodes at the end with four different lead parts playing at the same time-three vocal leads, plus a guitar solo on top of it all. “Little Girl in Bloom” mellows the album back down and “I’m Gonna Creep Up On You” is another cool, funky song. And “A Song for While I’m Away” is a sweet, heartfelt little tune that beautifully closes the album. Honestly, Vagabonds could be my favorite Thin Lizzy album on any given day, but it was just easier to list it as my wildcard today.

Great show and possibly the greatest band I saw live, 4 times 1975-77 in the Robbo-Gorham era. Just fantastic. I helped their crew load in once, at Cambridge, sat in for soundcheck and got to very briefly meet Phil. Fantastic band.. Jailbreak for me, no.1 album.

I'm doing my picks before I watch. Bare in mind that I actually really like all of these albums. There's so many great songs on each of them! (Phil Lynott=genius)
My 2 least favorite: Thin Lizzy & Shades of a Blue Orphanage (With a little trimming in the arrangements, these are classic Thin Lizzy albums. As they are, they're collections of diamonds in the rough.)
My 2 Favorites:----->Nightlife (I've adored it from the first. Just part of my DNA now), Jailbreak (The deep cuts are all so good!) Honorable Mention: Fighting
Wild Card!:------------>The Peel Sessions (I've spent as much time listening to it as any of the Lizzy studio albums and probably twice as many times as any of the umpteen compilation albums I've got in the collection.)
    If I'm being completely honest, My favorites is more of a top 8 that aren't separated by much more than sentimental value. Love these Favorite & Least Favorite episodes! I wish there was a way for you guys to get together on them more often but, I understand the limitations of juggling the day job with family time and a pet project. I had a 60 hour a week day job, four kids and a band at the same time about fourteen years ago. It only lasted about a year. The family and the day job were too important to go on with the band. It was fun while it lasted ;^}

It's unfair to rate all the albums together. I rate it this way, by eras. Eric Bell Era: Vagabonds of the Western World, Thin Lizzy then Shades of a Blue Orphanage. Classic Era: Fighting, Bad Reputation, Jailbreak, Johnny the Fox. Nightlife is a transition album that doesn't really fit with anything else that they did. Post Robbo: Black Rose, Chinatown, Thunder and Lightning and Renegade. If I have to choose two favorites it would be Fighting and Vagabonds of the Western World. Two least favorites are Shades of a Blue Orphanage and Renegade. My favorite era is the Eric Bell era. I can understand why many don't connect with their earlier music but once you do, you're hooked. There were many years where those early songs were all that I listened to. I still haven't heard any live music that I've connected with. I fell in love with the studio albums before I heard anything live and I never adjusted. I became a fan when Jailbreak was released in 1976. I hunted down all their older albums in record shops in many different places over many years. Since there was no Wikipedia back then, I had no clue what I was even hunting for. The last older studio album I picked up was Nightlife after I'd seen them open for Queen in 1977. They played Still in Love With You, It's Only Money and Sha La La and I'd never heard them before. I recently found out that Gary Moore had played at the show that I saw instead of Brian Roberston. Anyway, they've been my favorite band for almost 50 years now. Here's to all of you still listening, with whatever preferences you may have.

were looking forward for this episode with you lot, as i was expecting a rather varied result, and being one of THOSE bands, which as you did do a very fine way of explaining; had quite a musical journey throughout their existence, and before i forget it, YES Pete, i have thought about how cool wouldn't it have been to REDISCOVER one of you're all time fave bands that you've been listening to 30 years or more, BUT then again, as i am, albeit a purist, i do have a VERY eclectic taste in music, although metal n' punk came first (well, actually '60's rock n' roll AND Kraftwerk, i was born into the music industry, so it's hard to not remember a time before music, with the exception of classic American cars/hot rodding, and said music, was still my choices, but before i FOUND my path/style so to speak) BUT as your last RANT were all about, IAM that guy who STILL am looking for the best new (or old/forgotten album/band i haven't heard yet) release/band i haven't heard yet, which i think was very, as always, WELL explained/put by the man who refuses to sit down while appearing on S.O.T., Jamie, so i wouldn't have time for that, but yes, i great thought, the closest i'll get to being nostalgic, and when it comes to MY ranking, well i "have" to go for the "lazy" route to pick my least 2 fave albums, now i haven't even heard them all, not from start to finish, but that mix and MOSTLY due to that bluesy heavy rock style of songs is NOT my thing, i do like old blues with John Lee Hooker being my all time fave, whose guitar style is like NO one else, and yes Eric Bell were a great guitarist indeed, but still, i will join Pete and his choices for my 2 least fave Lizzy albums, now as for my 2 fave albums, well as you said; they started by Fighting!, as in the European cover artwork depicts and, well, i'm still indifferent about their 2 last albums, though, i'm also undecided, mainly concerning that album with the brilliant album cover, though, Renegade isn't the coolest cover either, BUT, although Chinatown, Johnny The Fox and Jailbreak are ALL great contenders, specially Johnny and Chinatown for my top 2, but, i usually end up with; Bad Reputation and Blue Rose (fun fact; Midge Ure did help them out on that tour, although you obviously knew that) and i can very much relate to some of darker lyrics that Phil writes concerning what he has to give up, as i did manage to do just that, having been a former heroin addict, but still clean since summer of 2005 🙂BUT that's not my reason for loving these 2 albums the most, i just tend to put them on the most, throughout the years, my go to albums and yes my 2 fave's, as for my wildcard...hm...21 Guns...hehe no, not my cup of tea, but although i DO love going to gigs i was never a live album fan, and Lizzy are one of those bands who did one of THOSE live albums with Alive And Dangerous, so i guess that would be it for me, as it's a DAMN fine live album (probably fixed up in the studio as they mostly are, but wahtev's, right) and oh, liking your new ranking the beers to, you have NO idea how you tempt me with your fancy ale's, so I DO like that opening part of The UK Connection 🙂 and one more thing, yup; R.E.M sure did some amazing albums, specially in the later part of their career, from New Adventures...to Reveal, although they do have some golden tracks/releases from day one AND one more thing; The Smiths are one of my ALL time fave bands

My two favorites are Jailbreak and Nightlife. Jailbreak speaks for itself. Nightlife is picked because of it’s additional R&B vibe. I’m probably more of an R&B fan than most Classic Rock folks.
Least favorites are any two of the first three albums. They just don’t hit me the way the latter catalogue does. Also, not the biggest fan of Johnny The Fox. Soooooo many love that album but it’s always been a head scratcher for me. Just about every other Lizzy album tops it.
    Great discussion!

Interesting picks. I like Renegade, too but Angel of Death stylistically does not fit to the rest, so the record has a weird start to set the mood for the album. Still some stellar tracks. My favorite is Black Rose.

I didn't start at teh beginning and logically/chronologically work forward, but the first album was one I deliberately checked out very early on (for me, that'd be early 2000s). THey weren't really on the radio here and I knew mostly a couple of songs from Jailbreak. Also listened to, I think, live and Dangerous once at an older person's apartment. I always am intrigued by the beginnings of things so I thought getting familiar with the first album as my first real Lizzy album experience made sense. And I have no regrets. To this day "Return of the Farmer's Son" is one of the first songs that pops into my head when one mentions the band's name. yeah, the album isn't characteristic, I suppose, but I really like it. Now I'm pretty familiar with most of the albums. I like Renegade more than many seem to and Thunder and Lightning less. But they're all pretty awesome if you really get down to it.

I saw the band on the Thunder and Lightning tour, although things were clearly a grind (although as a young chap I didn't realise it - which is how good they were). As Simon and Stephen will testify being a rock fan in the UK in the late 70's and 80's was pretty much akin to being a social outcast. The "elite" who decided what was cool always knew how talented Phil Lynott was but couldn't bring themselves to admit it. As great as the Lizzy "mainstream rock" catalogue is the depth of material and lyrical content is much under-rated. A great band in every sense.

To commemorate the spooky season, today's beverage:
'Dead Guy Ale' from Rogue Ale, brewed in the style of a German malbock, has a deep honey color 6.8% abv.
Only ever had 'Black Rose: A Rock Legend'. Was the one that would come out when hanging out with friends after a few sips and puffs. The cover art is a top 10 for me.
    Cheers🍻

Im far from an expert, but as a wild card option i would just say not to overlook the first couple of albums, particularly if you like late 60s bluesy guitar stuff. Its not amazing but dare I say a little underrated?

I'm completely with you Steven on Thunder & Lightning! When I went through the Lizzy catalogue last year for the the first time and ended with that record, it honestly did nothing for me cause it's sounds like a completely different band playing and not what I expected or wanted out of their sound!

Great show. My all time favorite band. Tough choices. Faves change weekly for me. I’ll go with fighting and black rose today. Least favorites, clear number one is Shades of a Blue Orphanage. I’d say the only actually bad album the ever made. And the second would be Night Life, although I don’t dislike it at all. My wild card is Live and Dangerous because it is my favorite album of ALL time. Period.
