Thank you! You are a lifesaver. I was having trouble installing a new Schlage double-keyed deadbolt - old model but never used - and the Schlage instructions said to "throw" the deadbolt but didn't say HOW. Your excellent instructions saved the day, 😎🙏👍
Sincere thanks to you! Deadbolt to the garage went out last night; googled the issue today and immediately found the answer. Called your shop and the parts are on the way. Many thanks!!!
Thank you, check that strike plate to make sure it isn't binding when you lock it (the number one reason why they twist) You likely need to move or router out that area so it works a bit better :)
Thanks so much for this. One tail piece on mine became separated from the round washer. I was able to reassemble it and spread the tangs out a bit to keep the washer captivated, reassembled and it worked. If it fails again, I will order the tail pieces from you.
Had to look at a few other videos before I saw the piece in your video I think you called it the tail piece but those two flat on one side and curved on the other side little silver pieces had no idea what to do when they fell out thanks so much for the help save me a trip to the locksmith brother
Thank you so much :-) I took the lock apart and was able to fix it myself. A small pin had worn out and I was able to fix it with a piece of a paperclip. It's better than the original. Thank you again.
Thanks for another fantastic video I watch Your channel every day what An inspiration. I get so much from Them also love the layout of your Shop very nice
I spent quite a bit of time looking for replacement tailpieces or spindles, like you mentioned. Turns out, it was the cross-shaped cam slot that was completely spent. Granted it's at least 20 years old, I was able to order just the latch in the same color so hopefully I won't have to have mismatched colored parts. Thanks for the video & pointing me in the right direction!
I spent an hour trying to get the two tail prices through the hole in the bolt. Then I found your video. Pushing out the bolt so the slot is vertical makes all the difference. It took me two minutes once I knew that.
That’s unfortunate, 95% of the time the lock will give one warnings (hard to turn, etc) that something’s wrong. When one ignores those warnings this can invariably happen
Awesome and informative video Jason my friend! FYI, I have not had the chance to work on the Baldwin Mortise Lock, I've been sick. As soon as I'm able to, I'll send you pictures via email! Thank you for sharing!!
Hi Jason Thank You for the detailed demonstration I would buy one only it would probably cost me double with shipping and all so meanwhile i'm off measuring me doors just in case LOL You could sell ice to an Eskimo, I am learning so much about the different locks & keys and the pitfalls of certain types which people would only find out once it was fitted. Also i have looked through your video's and see you haven't got one regarding door closers and best type to buy maybe. Cheers G.
How can I find the 1 inch tailpieces? I’ve contacted Schlage and they say it cannot be replaced but you are fixing exactly what I have and what mine is doing.
Hey Jason can you do a video on your predictions on how locksmith has changed over the years and what you think will become of it in the future...like maybe keyless locks with a chip in your arm or something. Cheers
if you have the outside spinning on a locked one door house, would you then use the old lady solution - hammer a window, to access from inside. Or mark the screws position on the front and drill through the cylinder to snap the screws and expose the lock parts
Rune International yep! I’ve got one :) a few of those have been aged before. I use a vapor aging process, probably will do a video whenever I have to do it next time. A couple of those in the Schlage staging area were aged in a batch I did for s antique home remodel about a year ago pretty healthy extra charge too ;)
SE Lock and Key would be cool to see. saw your fake bronze paint trick. BTW not sure if it is a problem with my youtube app, but the newest video of yours showing up on my normal list, is the crawfish. the newest 2 only shows up under notifications
I have a very old Schlage deadbolt that has caps that actually looks like they are two parts, a ring and a pin. However they are made, I cannot remove them by prying them out. They are flush with the face. Is there another way, even cutting the lock off?
I'm glad I wasnt the only one. Mine showed up on sunday saying one day ago. I was like what the hell youtube I know these videos were not here yesterday.
Took the locks out to paint the doors. I followed your instructions carefully when reinstalling them, and the locks can be smoothly manually locked, but the keys still won’t turn! They go in fine, but won’t budge! Any ideas at all? The pins Cosme out when I removed the locks but they didn’t break and I easily fit them back in. Did it cause a problem with the mechanism when the pins were temporarily taken out and put back in?
pam brown unfortunately if there are no other doors the lock will have to be drilled out and replaced if you cannot get in. If you hire a locksmith make sure to not just go on google “referred” or anyone that shows a super cheap price of $30-50 try to locate a actual local company and not fall for getting scammed by one of these companies
So I have been seeing locks wit 2 keyholes in a deadbolt but their on the same side and has a turn knob on the other side of the dead bolt why is there a hidden keyhole in some dead bolt locks??
That’s the Kwikset smart key style lock, since they can’t be master keyed this was Kwikset’s answer, put in another cylinder so apt mgr/maintenance can have a “bypass key”
Thanks for this, but I'm still stuck. The tailpieces on my lock won't line up and fall out as I try to put the lock together. There door is a metal security screen and the tailpieces are very short. Is there a way to temporarily keep the tailpieces in place?
Chris Knox no, in your instance it’s just more of a hold your tongue right. When the tailpieces are vertical and bolt extended they shouldn’t fall out as easily
Good video. Where can I get a replacement latch that fits a Schlage double cylinder style like the one you show here? I'm looking for a replacement on a gate lock that is using an electronic striker with a Schlage double cylinder that has a worn latch. I can't find one at the big box stores.
legalsolutions07 we sell and ship them. Send us an email, need to know which length you need as gates often use the 3/4 or shorter inch selockandkey@gmail.com Thanks for watching :)
I’m sorry I just re-read this. You are looking for the actual latch itself. On a gate I assume it automatically locks with a latch that uses a latch like you would see on a doorknob correct? It would be either 2 3/8 or 2 3/4 which is the distance from edge of gate to center of keyhole
Yes, I'm looking 4 the dead latch itself that will fit in a Schlage double cylinder style lock. It's a 2 3/8" size but all I can find r the deadbolt style that will fit the double cylinder.
I just went to unlock my basement and the key spun around on the deadbolt and the entire tumbler assembly fell out. Any tips on how to remedy that or should I call a smith?
Unless you can reach through the hole with a flat head and get it to open by turning in the direction of the unlock position or get inside another way you may have to get a locksmith. Make sure to not get a scammer company! ($29 service call)
I'm installing a deadbolt and it will lock but key won't come out. from inside I can't unlock bolt unless the key is in the door from outside. heeeeeelp.

Rune International yeah it would have to be screw attack :( been there, done that quite a few times with our shifting soil
SE Lock and Key not good with those 40+ yo brass locks. Maybe start a lock aging area in the back garden for drill to pop replacements

Dremel with a cut off wheel to cut a slot in the head and use a small flat head to remove
Thanks! Fixed it myself.

So, not much sleep the night before you recorded this?
Im going to replace the screws on random locks I sell with posidrives just to piss off the next guy. No, its not practical but it'd be funny as hell.
Can you please tell me the name of the busted part you pull out. That is what i need. thanks
montiac22 tailpiece, we offer them in all sizes, if needed please feel free to email selockandkey@gmail.com
I'm locking for electronic dead bolt lock won't retract
What happens when the entire lock will not tighten. Like the entire clylinder will not line up when tightened up.
What if the key piece isn't broken but the bolt still won't unlock/move when the hole that the key piece goes in is turned?
Latch is broken and needs to be replaced if the bolt won’t throw out. We do have plenty and are $8 each if you’d like to email selockandkey@gmail.com
I have this problem on an old safe.
Link to parts? price range?
I'm installing a deadbolt and it will lock but key won't come out. from inside I can't unlock bolt unless the key is in the door from outside. heeeeeelp.
Take off, extend deadbolt, put each tailpiece in the center position of its turn. Make sure the key is out, reinstall
Why would you worry about a key that spins around when you could make a SHEAR POINT KEY!!!!
sleepinghiker 😂😂 :p I KNO! People could just buy one of those and not worry about fixing it!!! ;)
