- In this video, I show and discuss two extremely overpriced records as well as show some records that I have been seeking out for a very long time. I also take a trip down memory lane and visit what remains of my childhood record store. In this video, I show and discuss records from bands/artists such as U2, Sting, Duke Ellington, George Michael, Billy Joel, Bill Withers, Phil Collins, and Billy Joel.

I set my GPS celebrity voice to Bono. Now the streets have no name, and I still haven't found what I'm looking for... ;-)
You're the best!!!! 🤩
To any dads who read your joke: In the Name of Love, U2 should share it with your Boy!
that's BAD
Then you took a wrong turn in god's country and ended up in a red hill mining town?
Why drive on a sunny weather? It's a Beautiful Day, Walk On!
I closed my record store over 20 years ago. All these years later I still have customers reaching out to me on Facebook expressing to me how much my record store meant to them. I find it very gratifying. The record stores I went to as a kid are long, long gone but I'll never forget them. I bought some nice LPs just yesterday from an older gentleman who worked at Sam Goody back in the '70s. Some of his albums still had the Sam Goody price tag on them. So nostalgic and fun.
I can understand why people miss stores like yours. They were great meeting places. Every one was different. Each had its own smell, atmosphere and personality. A sad loss to society.
You're responsible for some very happy memories. ♥️ No doubt your customers still miss you. Those old record store stickers are very cool. Thank you and take care.
@@MelindaMurphy Anatomy of a Murder is a great soundtrack. The all analog Hotspot Soundtrack, a new movie with Older Miles Davis songs is a great soundtrack in vinyl, I didnt liker the cd version. It is hard to find new, but fairly cheap used & the soundtrack was only put out a few years ago, so most vinyl is in good shape. I was totally shocked when I found out Sting was a billionaire, he must have invested in stocks very good. I would like to see Belinda talk about the RARE$ 100% ALL ANALOG RECORDED VINYL in the last 40 years. 100% analog vinyl records like: Beck-Odelay 2016, Coldplay-Viva, all White Stripes albums, Hotspot Soundtrack with Miles Davis, Ry Cooder=Meeting by the River, Norah Jones remaster-Come away With Me, Jazz at the Pawnshop, Patricia Barber albums, Belinda had a review on Nirvana-Nevermind, John Mellencamp-Life, Death., & many others.
The record stores of my youth are mostly gone, but the excitement and enchantment of going there will stay in my heart and mind forever!!
I feel the same way. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
God bless you, Melinda. Your videos are always heart-warming, even if they sometimes are a bit sad as well.
Thank you so much!♥️ Take care.
🤦♂️ Wow…It just sucks that people who don’t know any better will buy those ridiculously overpriced records. Awesome promo! That’s a beautiful 6 eye promo label. I’ve never seen that Sting record in the wild. Great finds. Cool seeing where your childhood record store was. Mine is unfortunately long gone. Thanks, Melinda. 🔊😊🎶
Thank you! I was thrilled to pick up the Sting record and I finally have a 6 eye white label promo. I'm so excited! I guess that makes me a pretty big nerd. 🤩 Thank you and take care.
Great stuff again Melinda really enjoyed it cheers
Thank you so much! 😃
Love watching your vids from all the way down under here in Australia. Your records are always in such amazing condition. Would like to see a vid on how you store your records…such protective sleeves, alphabetical by artist or album title etc. keep the great content coming!
Thank you so much! I will keep those suggestions in mind. For a couple of short answers, I do alphabetical order according to last name or band name. I have separate rock, jazz, and classical categories. I use outer sleeves by Vinyl Storage Solutions and MoFi inner sleeves. Take care.
Hi Melinda
Great video...
Music and memories pulls on my heart strings...
❤
I agree. ♥️ Thank you so much! Have a wonderful day!
Really enjoyed the video my friend, that's cool seeing what the record store looks like today. At least a bar is playing music so that's one good thing. By the way a great t-shirt
Thank you! It's good to see that good times are still had at what once was the old record shop. I'm so grateful that they didn't get rid of that iconic round window. ♥️ Take care.
That was a sweet video. Happy birthday Melinda.
Thank you so much! ♥️😃
I enjoyed this video so much! It’s always good to see a record you’ve been searching for a long time! The excitement rush comes over you and people think you’ve lost it 😂
Oh yes, childhood memories of going to record stores are what will stay with you forever.
Regarding the pricing of records. There have been times where I’ve busted out laughing at prices I’ve seen on records. I loved hearing about the stories of your mom buying you records and how that meant to you. Take care my friend.
Glad you enjoyed it! I loved my childhood and music was such a huge part of it. ♥️ Thank you and have a great weekend.
@@MelindaMurphy Yes! My childhood was good as well. Thank you for sharing your life experiences!
When you said about 'the little prayer' I smiled because I do this too when I come across an elusive album. Very interesting video, Melinda!
Haha! I knew I wasn't alone on this. 😀 Thank you and take care.
Hi Melinda. I was watching a vinyl auction on Whatnot this last weekend, and I could not believe the prices some folks were paying for the records. Granted these were very collectible and many were definitive pressings, but many of them sold for 4 to 5 times more than what I thought they would go for. Absolutely insane prices. If this is what this hobby has come to, I feel really bad for the music lovers who are just starting out. As always, great video. I enjoyed it!
I agree. The Whatnot auctions get very crazy. I have watched a few and my jaw dropped to the floor. Thank you and take care.
It’s such an exciting moment when you’re out in the wild and find a record you’ve been wanting. There have been a few times where I’ve said, “let’s go!!” Or “nice!!” to myself out loud by accident, and I can imagine I got some weird looks. Your husband and daughter were probably like, “what are you so happy about?”lol. Btw, your videos are always a highlight to the beginning days of the work week! I always look forward to them
If you like Hysteria, have you heard the song " I don't live here anymore" by War On Drugs? Very Hysteria sounding
I was so excited about that Columbia six eye promo. I'm sure my daughter thinks I'm certifiable. 😁
Thank you for the kind words of encouragement. I appreciate it so much. Take care. ♥️
Your mom still lives in you Melinda! And now a bit of her lives in us! Thanx for the share girl!
BTW: The Soul Cages IMO is Sting’s very best album post Police!
It was specially mixed to sound 3-D, and though the tech didn’t quite live up to what they were trying to achieve in the mix, the whole album as a concept is a wonderful mix of his past and sea-based-mythology!
Hands down his best record as a solo artist, and that’s saying a lot as he’s wonderful!
But yeah, he was better with the Police!❤❤❤
I like all of Sting's albums but The Soul Cages is the stand out. Thank you for the kind words. ♥️ Take care.
luv the insight. luv the content. luv the hair. you are my sunshine.
Wow! Thank you! 🌞
When I was in college, we spent many nights at Tower Records near the university. They stayed open late and there was a great vibe. I was sorry to see them close. Some great finds, Melinda!
That must have been a great time. It's so sad to see them go. Thank you and take care.
I worked 20 years for Musicland Group that owned Sam Goodys, Coconuts, Best Buy (for a few years) Suncoast Video Stores and I witnessed the transitions from LPS/45s to CDs and DVD/Video Games/Wii and was sad to see all stores except Best Buy close in 2011 but luckily my storage is so full I have records I forgot about - when I was a kid my mom took me to Woolworth's every Friday and allowed to pick EITHER 10 singles or 2 LPS but sadly all those records are lost to time - I find myself listening to MP3s as well - this was a great video Melinda and you're still the prettiest gal on You Tube ❤
There is still a Coconuts record store in Evansville Indiana. It's affiliated with the FYE stores. I don't know if it's the same as the ones you worked with but I think it's the last one left called Coconuts. Things have changed completely but at least we have come full circle with vinyl. I remember Woolworth stores. ♥️ It sounds like you had a very cool mom. Thank you for the kind compliment. Take care.
Me too, I was store manager of several Sam Goodys 1993-2006. In March 2006, we lost 75% of the stores in the company in one fell swoop, and all of ours here in Jacksonville Fl were part of that. I had a friend in Tallahassee, whose store was lucky enough to make the cut, but it was converted to FYE soon after. It's amazing how many FYE's are still around with all the streaming etc
@@dawnpatrol700 I also worked the FYE Stores - there are at least 1 in each of our states - still selling CDs/Cassettes/Games/DVDs/Magazines - I loved working for Musicland Group we always had good crews - these stores are mostly in Malls that are still operating and malls are generally museums now
@@louisbonilla6780 that's why I was puzzled when Melinda said she visited an "ABANDONED MALL" lol, I didn't know if she meant she was trespassing on closed property lol
@@louisbonilla6780 the annual meetings were the highlight for me. I remember the 1st year Best Buy had acquired TMG was a huge meeting, employees took over the whole hotel and Blondie played live ( who was in the midst of a comeback). I think of meeting Britney Spears when she was nobody, and talking to Matchbox 20 in 1996 in the elevator, having no idea they were about to be huge stars. I remember Sammy Hagar in Caesars Palace circa 2000. Paul Stanley was promoting his own guitar line circa 2002, and getting to talk to one of my heroes was amazing. Take care
Congratulations on the Duke lp.
Great movie too btw!
I used to record shop at a place in Kent, Ohio that literally had a million records!
By the 90's no one was buying records in the area but a very few people.
Anyway, your Duke lp reminded me I found a wlp monos of Billie Holiday- Lady in Satin, Dave Brubeck-Time Out, and Johnny Cash The Fabulous lps.
The store was closed around 2011 and I still hear music today I didn't know about and I think, "I wish Spinmore was still around, he probably had that record"! Anyway, I enjoy your vids!
We watched the movie last week. It was long but very good. Duke makes an appearance. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
Nice video, you will always have the good memories of your old record shop Melinda, no matter what happens to the building. I used to like Tower Records when it was in Piccadilly Circus London, such a good shop for imports & magazines from America. Sadly long gone now.
I know things can't stay the same but I sure do feel nostalgic for that special record store. Thank you and take care.
My childhood record stores are gone. Cosmic Blues, Trade Those Tunes and Checkered Records...I spent so much time in them and the owners are gone as well. A good chunk of my collection came from Checkered and I would spend hours there just talking with the owner George about music. We became good friends and I have a nice framed picture of him in his store on my record shelf. Love the Alice tee! Great video and take care!
What a sweet way to pay tribute to a person that means so much to you. ♥️ Thanks for sharing your memories. Those old record stores were the best. Take care.
Great memories! All of my childhood record stores closed down. Sam Goody was my favorite. Phil Collins But Seriously... Is my favorite Phil Collins album I also played it non stop in my car when it got released. My favorite song is Do You Remember? That's such a beautiful song. Great video!
I love that song too. This is my favorite Phil Collins album as well.
It's sad that our childhood record stores are gone but I love seeing the younger people opening new ones due to the vinyl resurgence. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
Beautiful Ellington 6-eye promo! -- Mike
Thank you! It's my first 6 eye Columbia promo. I am so happy which makes me a very big nerd. Lol. Take care. 😃♥️
I'm so glad there are still identifiable features of your childhood record store! I'm very fortunate in that my childhood record store, Fantasyland, is still thriving in my neighborhood. I first shopped there in 1984 and bought a used cassette of Roxy Music's Greatest Hits.
That's awesome! I'm glad they are still there. 😃 Thank you and take care.
Keep it up and love hearing about your record finds and what you think is fare pricing.
Thank you so much! 😃♥️
Don't have time to watch this video, but will have to get caught up when I can. Getting very very busy, so I may miss your videos in the future, but I plan to watch them eventually. Have a good week, Melinda. 👍💖🎸😎
I will miss you. ♥️ I hope you are doing something wonderful like taking a vacation. Stay safe and healthy. Take care.
@@MelindaMurphy Thanks and best wishes to you too. God willing, I'll be back. 😊
Amazingly interesting video, Melinda. I have been buying a few ridiculously high vinyl records as of late myself 🙄
Thank you so much! Some of our most sought after records are on the expensive side. It comes with the territory. 😃 Take care.
@@MelindaMurphy Take Care :-)
I very recently picked up Still Bill ,it was the Simply Vinyl version which also sounds good . ...nice video !
It's a great album to have. Thank you and take care. ♥️😃
I really like it when you take us back to memories in some of your videos. I do the same thing myself in my own mind and I have vivid memories of a lot of my history that is either no longer there or no longer the same business.
I had to laugh when you talked about the categorizing times of life and music by the cars you drove. Granted it was in the 1980s when I was driving these and old enough to drive, but I have my 1972 GMC Sierra pickup era, the 1972 Toyota Corona vehicle era (when I blew the engine and had to rebuild it in the 1972 GMC haha), the 1972 Chevelle era, and the 1969 Chevelle era that went up into the 1990s. I think I had the most fun in the 1972 GMC pickup and 1972 Chevelle eras. I can often times hear a song and it will take me to a specific time or place for things like the first time I heard it, the girl I was in love with and that song spoke to me about, and where I was at just the name a few examples. It's almost like a time machine with music sometimes.
Memories are good things oftentimes and sometimes it's hard not to want to go back. Of course we can't do that but one song that I think describes it better than any other is Eddie Money's song I Wanna Go Back. What a perfect song to describe something so many people have a hard time describing.
Brian in Fort Worth 🎶
I agree? That Eddie Money song hits it on the head. We all have history with the cars we drove. The Thunderbird was probably my favorite. 🥰 I was so proud of that car. Lol
Thank you and take care.
@@MelindaMurphy I really wanted one of those early 1990s Thunderbirds. I used to drive from Houston up to the Little Rock, Arkansas area to see my old girlfriend after she had moved and I would always rent one of those. I thought they were really sharp looking and I enjoyed driving them. I think I spent about $1,000 renting and driving Thunderbirds between 1990 and 1992 haha. It would definitely have been a cool car to have had! No matter what year it was made :-)
Great video Melinda! Oh gosh I had several favorite places to buy records but “Sound Warehouse” in El Paso Texas was my favorite. They sold vinyl LP’s, 45’s and cassettes, black light & regular music posters and collectibles.
One memorable purchase was in 1985 and it was “Meet The Beatles”.
I didn’t open it but saved it. I finally opened and listened to that record two years ago. Why have a sealed album when you can listen to it.
Great memories of spending hours walking the entire store listening to albums before I purchased them. I remember this store had a huge display of Nirvana Nevermind with a real dollar bill hanging on a hook. It was so cool!
So….I don’t know what your regular job is but you should teach MUSIC APPRECIATION classes. Your knowledge of different genres of music is so impressive! You make every video so interesting with stories and memories and info about bands. These kids need you to teach them about music! The do’s and don’t’s about collecting and how much to spend, etc. You are such a plethora of information!! Start another RUclips channel for music appreciation education! Seriously you should!! I would definitely watch you on that channel too!
You look so pretty today and I love your Alice Cooper T-shirt. 😊
Thank you for your video.
Happy early 4th of July!
❤Deb
Thank you for the kind words of encouragement. I appreciate it so much. I do have two other jobs along with housework so another channel wouldn't be feasible at this time. I am honored that you think I would be a good music appreciation teacher. 🥰 Thanks again and take care.
You're the coolest vinyl lover Melinda! thank you for the great sharing. Prices are crazy and Amazon is as weird as ever...i just ordered Jewel's greatest hits for 53$ in Canada, before it goes back to 66$ as it is usually... Even rare on discogs so ...
Thank you and see you next time 😊
Thank you so much! ♥️😃 Enjoy your Jewel record.
@@MelindaMurphy Thank you ❤ I got 3 others from her but I bought the greatest hits in part for the song Hands from Spirit which was never rereleased I believe...✌️🙏❤
Hello Melinda ! The ridiculous prices can partly be explained with : sellers greed and new buyers ignorance. They simply don’t know they’re being robbed. The building which contained my childhood record store still stands too. Since I work for my towns parks department , I’m around it many times each week. My teenage ones in the bigger neighbouring town are gone too , and there I’ve even more vivid memories. ”Dead end records” where we bought all punk,Oi,hardcore, ska and underground music around 1980 and ”Hot wax” where we got all indie, alternative, ambient and psychedelica right around the same time. The more mainstream records were bought in chainstores or at a huge department store at the mall. They had a very well diversed record section with a little old lady who had a computer brain. She didn’t know squat about music but she knew exactly what she had in the whole store by bandname and album titles AND singles. ”Ah , sweet youth , where , oh where has thou fled?” Take care. /R (A on shopping trip with her sister)
The old record stores were wonderful and the employees knew all about the music. ♥️ I'm in denial about how old I am. Lol. Thank you and I hope she has a great time with her sister. Take care.
Ok so I have to say you got me laughing a couple times on this one! First when you said you could buy the whole Billy Joel discography for under $50. But even better was, “I don’t know about you but I get confused on which Phil Collins album is which because they’re all just pictures of his big head.” That was so hilarious because it’s true! 😂. I wish I thought of that line. Perfect. High priced vinyl hall of shame. I like the name. Glad you were able to find such a nice promo copy of that soundtrack you have been wanting. Sweet! And it is sad seeing some of the old malls we went to as kids dying a slow death. Great as always MM! Have a fun week!
Haha! So I'm not the only person that has to look at the tracklisting on every Phil Collins album? Whew! That's a relief. 😃
It is sad to see a lot of the old places we used to go disappearing. Our local Kmart is now a thrift store so I still go to it but it's sad to see all of the Kmarts closed down. Thank you and take care.
The reason Phil Collins named his debut solo album "Face Value" and he put an up close picture of his balding head on all his albums was because of the media mercilessly mocking him and insulting him about being a big rock star who was balding and looked so ordinary. This was just after disco and right at the height of New Wave fashion and Big Hair Cheese Metal. All the male singers then either looked like tattooed poodles or androgynous mascara wearing fem boys (see Gary Numan, Soft Cell, Human League, Boy George, Flock of Seagulls, Duran Duran etc). It was also the dawn of MTV where VIDEOS of the artist emphasized style over substance. The media couldn't wrap their heads around a balding middle-aged guy being so popular while so plain and "unstylish". It was Phil's big F YOU to the media and the music critics. I thought it was hilarious. He's not only an iconic lead vocalist, writer and music producer, he's one of the best drummers of the last half century. Phil had the last laugh. Where are all those mascara covered Femme bands now? 😅
Wow! Congrats on that very cool Columbia Promo, also Dan Fogelberg was one of my Father's favorite artists, "Run for the Roses" and "Met My Old Lover" were two of his favorites, side note, Dennis DeYoung recorded a song "Run for the Roses" on his 2020 solo album 26 East, it's a fantastic song on a very good album, thanks for sharing another awesome video. Peace
I love Dan Folgelberg although I'm not sure I'm supposed to admit that. Lol.
I'm still listening to the instant UFO collection. 😃 I hope to show and talk about them on a video very soon. Thank you and have a great week!
@@MelindaMurphy I really think you will enjoy the "Lights Out" album, great rock, not to heavy, have a great 4th!
Another winner Melinda fascinating stuff
I predict you will love "Anatomy of a Murder" really smart film and Jimmy Stewart is brilliant
worst overpricing I have witnessed a Japanese tourist paying £60 for a scruffy copy of Bowie's "Let's Dance" at Covent Garden Market in London
If that guy had walked a few hundred yards to the HMV store in Oxford Street he could have brought a brand new copy for a third of what he paid!
Loved the photo of your old record store great building just a pity it has ceased trading and is now a bar but hey you havevthe memories
Take care Melinda
I really want to see that move. I'm sure it's great.
Wow! That's a crazy price for a beat up copy of Let's Dance. 😮 That's a shame. Thank you and take care.
Great Vid! I also am a June kid 6/11/1968 👍
Nice story about Sting. Pain has a way of clipping our wings. Grief is important 💙.
I like the advice, if you’re going through Hell, best not park there. That’s the grieving process, moving through it rather than stuffing it down. 🙏
I got a great clean copy of Billy Joel’s greatest hits in around 2012 for a dollar 💵
Thanks for sharing.
Sting had to go through the process and he was able to create a beautiful record on the other side.
You got an incredible deal on the Billy Joel record. Not everyone is that lucky. ♥️😃 Thank you and take care.
Hey Melinda… timely video, as I was disgusted just today, when I stopped into my local record store.
MFSL Dire Straits’ Making Movies’ used… good shape, probably VG+ or maybe EX. Unfortunately they had it priced at $90!! Absolutely absurd. It’s back in stock at MOFI for $60.
Right behind it in the bin was MFSL Communiqué; also $90 used at this record store, and also brand new available from MOFI for $60.
Enjoy the videos; keep up the good work 😊
They will be back in stock at some point. That is a lot of money for a common MoFi . 😮 Thank you and take care!
Cool promo Melinda. I havent seen that six eye promo label before.
Phil Collins always had his head on the album cover and Peter Gabriel had about four self-titled records.
Funny about the "car" chronology. Makes sense. I listened to so many cds and songs on the radio in my cars over the years.
It's funny. I can think back to certain memories in life and recall what car I was driving at the time. Lol.
The Phil Collins albums all look the same to me. Lol. Thank you and take care.
LoL. As soon as you're talkin about the box sets I knew who you were talking of.. and of course I guess the store before you ever mentioned it cuz we've got one in Knoxville😅
Yes. You know it well Rod. 😃
My brother lived in Evansville , actually I think the town was Booneville. That was such a long time ago. Thanks for the memory. Enjoyed the video.
Boonville isn't far from Evansville. My mom used to take my sister and me to the public pool in Boonville. It was very nice. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
Like yourself, I would never pay $43 for that Garth Brooks album. Buyer beware and do your shopping homework! Thank you for taking us down your memory lane! I too can relate to your thoughts and feelings of years past! Fortunately, I still have all my 45’s from years ago (1960’s), and yes, recall when my parents bought me records, or hearing one today that brings back a special memory of a time with my parents. Thank you for sharing your A++ memories here today! 👏😁
You were smart to save all of your 45's. Not only does the music bring back memories, you still have the exact records. ♥️ I hate to think someone is going to buy that used Garth Brooks record while a new copy sits at a local Walmart for much less. Thank you so much for your kind words. Take care. ♥️😃
As a teenager i remember shopping at the Record Bar in the mall in Winston Salem NC. They had an excellent heavy metal section and i bought a lot there between 83-86 . The employees were always really nice. I remember one time i bought several albums and the girl at the counter asked me to wait a minute. She went into the back and came back to the counter with a promo poster of Ozzy's The Ultimate Sin album. It had just came out and they didnt display it so she wanted me to have it. I thought that was so kind of her.
That was such a cool gesture. We had a Record Bar store in one of our malls as well. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
I lived in Winston in the late 70‘s/early 80’s and there was a fellow who had a great record store just off Stratford Road. His hours were sporadic and you only knew he was open if his green Jaguar was there, but he always had awesome cutting edge stuff. I’d bet anything the R.E.M. guys shopped there when they recorded at Mitch Easter’s.
I still have a sealed picture disc of Sgt. Pepper’s that came from that Record Bar!
very cool promo!
Thank you Harry! I was so excited to find it. ♥️ Take care.
I remember when that Billy Joel was an $8 to $10 record but I never see it less than $40 these days. Insane!
I was lucky enough to find two OG Bill Withers records within the last year. They are damn near impossible to find!
Cheers,
Brian☘️
The Bill Withers records are tough to find. I'm glad MoFi is putting out nice reissues so I can have his music in the collection.
The Billy Joel record used to be so common and always under $20 when I first started collecting. I feel bad for people trying to build a collection now. The prices are really high. Thank you and have a happy 4th. 🇺🇲♥️
A bunch of classic must haves there. ...and yes, the prices on that Billy Joel and Garth were just INSANE!!!
Thank you! I hope you have an amazing weekend! ♥️🇺🇲
You crack me up talking about how all of Phil Collins records have his big head on it. And but seriously has been on my want list for a really long time too and I found it last month at a great price!
I'm glad you found it as well. We no longer have to read the tracklisting on every single Phil Collins record. 🥰 Sweet! Thank you and take care.
Hi Melinda, congrats on the nice findings, especially the white label, I have a few and they look and sound stunning. And I remember TV commercials of that Phil Collins lol. This Bill Withers MoFi is much better than the original, don’t even bother. Most rattle and hum songs have studio versions in the great 80-90 collection, the double disc. I shopped a lot of U2 at the local store in the city wheee I grew up, which unfortunately no longer exists. But I still remember buying Rattle and Hum. I’m still member of the fan club until this day lol
It's very cool that you are still on their fanclub. It's great that fanclubs still exist. ♥️
I'm very excited to finally have a Columbia 6 eye white label promo. 😃 Thank you and take care.
Great video my friend and i hate to say this but i am not much on Garth Brooks i might 1 or 2 songs of his but not a big fan but i am happy you like him though, much i love Records but they are getting over pricy and it is sad so this is one reason i am back into cds there much cheaper lol anyway great collection and keep up the great work, and let you know that i am taking some time off on making videos but i well be back very soon just need some time off lol
I understand. We all need a break occasionally. It's going to be a very hot week. Enjoy your break and stay cool. 😃
@@MelindaMurphy thank you my friend and you to
U2 Rattle & Hum, I was there - Thanks Melinda for your video. I moved to AZ in 86 from IN. I was at the first show of the Joshua Tree tour and then again when they returned in Dec 1987 for two shows for $5 a ticket!! Bullet the Blue Sky appears on Rattle and Hum. Bono is the best and I encourage you to read his book Surrender.
Btw, do you remember Headstone Friends record shop in TH?. I believe it’s still open 😁
I don't remember that store. It's been a long time since I have been to Terra Haute. I might have to go sometime. 😃
It's so cool that you got to see U2 twice for such a low price. Arizona is a great state. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
Love Phil Collins and Genesis. I bought Face Value in the first week it was released and could not believe how fantastic it was. A fav is “If Leaving Me Is Easy” - so cool. “But Seriously” great as well - must get it on vinyl like you did as I had converted to CD at that point.
He was huge in the 80's and I do like a lot of his solo work and with Genesis. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
Great video Melinda I think maybe the reason for the high price on Garth Brooks might have something to do with him opening up a new bar and the controversy over him saying he will serve Bud Light at his bar.
That's possible. That record might just sit around like Bud Light is now. 😃 Especially for that price. Thank you and take care.
Hi Melinda. Crazy prices, I’m still recovering from what I paid for the Bill Evans album on RSD. Have never paid so much for an album. I really have to watch the pennies.
Love the video thank you. Take care.
It was a high priced album but one worth having. ♥️ I have to be careful too. Thank you and take care.
Nice job as always your videos are always thought provoking and interesting. I moved back to my Homestate at the end of 2011 and a lot has changed. The Mall i spent so much money and time was gone and in the last few years leveled. Michigan also had the oldest Mall in the Country and it was torn down since i have been back. People in California say they had the oldest Mall but you can't argue with dates. Los Angeles likes to steal from Detroit their NFL team has a famous Defensive Line called the Fearsome Foursome but the Lions used that name for their Defensive Line first. Lol. It is sad to see apart of our life disappear and music does help remind us of places, smells and memories. At 58 years old now being in not great health i catch myself remembering my past thinking i wish i could go back and change things and make sure i met my kids Mom to have them and get a do over. Music out of all things in my life as i am often alone is what that keeps me going. You remembered your Interior of your Ford Probe popping in the CD and dating your Husband. Music is the constant denominator of our memories. My brain is filled with thousands of songs and memories good or bad that go with them. So real sad songs that i can hear and no longer break down in a store. Some i can hear now and get through and others that have not been tested because i have not bought those albums. I have good memories too and the soundtrack to them. I am worried that i will lose my memories as i am Diabetic and have Parkinsons as well.
I'm so sorry to hear about your health problems. I hope your mind stays strong. ♥️ We all have things we wish we could change but hopefully, music also brings back the stuff we got right and the good times in our lives. It's weird but I can hear a song that reminds me of breaking green beans with my mom. Who knew such a mundane task could bring a smile to my face all of these years later. Thankfully, mom always had the radio on and those songs are now the soundtrack of my life. ♥️ I wish you better health and happiness. It's wonderful to hear that you can relate to music in the same way I do. Thanks for sharing your story and take care.
@@MelindaMurphy thank you for your kind words and I really had good memories that was the soundtrack to my life. Unfortunately my Mom does not listen to music now at least when I am around. As a kid she played music a lot we had one of those giant stereo console that had AM FM Stereo on it as well as a record player that you could stack 45s on it and it would play the stack. You had to open the top to get to the controls. Later on as a teenager I had that big console in my bedroom and I used it mostly for the radio. The record player had 4 speeds, 16, 33, 45 and 78 and my Sister and I would put on a 45 and turn the speed down to 16 and laugh about what it sounded like. Both my Mom and Dad separated when I was 15 and divorced at 16. They both are remarried and neither one listens to music which I think is not good. Even my Sister did not listen to music and she had no working stereo in her house or her current vehicle. I hooked up her home bookshelves stereo and installed a stereo with CD player in her car and I bought her CDs which I mentioned in past conversations. I just cannot fathom not having music in my life. Not too long ago I started buying vinyl and got a decent home stereo with everything but a reel to reel. I still have my cassettes that are stored in 8 wooden Napa Valley cases that hold 100 each, got a working 8 track player and I own about ten 8 track tapes, then there is my ever growing CD collection that is in the thousands. I buy mostly CDs but I am buying Albums as well I like the portability of the CD because my car has a player as well as other technology to make driving a lot more fun. No matter how long I have to live I need music in my life. I get plenty of silence and alone time. Everyone in my family lives north of me in smaller towns where I live in the city on the 6th floor in a 12 story building. I live where you have to be 55 and older with a disability. I have 8 diseases I am fighting with Diabetes and Parkinsons being the ones that will be what finishes me. My A1C was 6.0 which is a real great sugar level but the damage is done for the medicine I take I have Kidney disease and have been in the hospital multiple times for Renal failure which the numbers were high enough to go on dialysis. I am just trying to make the best of my situation and not focus on what I am against. Music is my get-away from the bad stuff I lived hard and fast and did a lot in my 58 years and even though I look younger than I am I have a older body inside. I still have my full head of hair and I have let it grow longer now. I am living out my rock and roll fantasy and choosing to stay young in my mind. I write a lot and I work on keeping my mind working so my quality of life is the best it can be. So I have been doing a lot of reflecting and thinking about old family and friends that are not around anymore and I realize I got to get out and find ways to meet new people not just someone at a music store. Still got to finish unpacking even though a lot has been done. I am supposed to have a person to help me but no one wants to work so I have things that were easy to do that now difficult. My back is messed up bad and moving things is painful so I have to work at a slow pace. I am a neat freak as I always have been as a child. I never got in trouble for having a dirty room or leaving a mess.
Your videos are always so enjoyable...this ones no exception. The ridiculous prices on some pieces are simply nuts which baffles me. I always thought the idea was to make a few bucks and re home a record if its used. I agree with you on the Phil Collins jackets and his noggin being on them...I would love to know the reasoning on that vs a full body pic or something like that. I'm not a huge fan of his solo work but there are a few i do like alot.
As to Garth Brooks prices you mentioned...that's a head scratcher as to why. I sure as heck wouldn't pay 40ish for a new repop if I can get a decent original at about half the price.
Billy Joel though...I do have that GH 1 and 2 and have seen them separately also...why sell them both ways is beyond me. But the gatefold vinyl is a harder one to find in good shape..I paid 30 for mine but its a fantastic copy...i did hem and haw a bit though before pulling the trigger though.
As for revisiting your old record store of youth..thats always fun to go back and revisit those places and times. I wasn't a buyer of records much then..mostly cassettes.
Keep up the great videos...and those cool shirts you always wear..too cool Melinda🙂
First off, thank you so much for the kind words. It means a lot.
The Billy Joel album is definitely worth $30 if it's in good shape. For so long all of Billy Joel's records were under $10. It's hard to get my head around one selling consistently for $50.🤔
I assume Phil Collins never realized that so many years later vinyl collectors would be trying to buy all of his records at once. Lol. At least he did put the tracklisting on the back of his albums. Lol. Thank you and take care.
Thanks for another good video. When talking about Phil Collins.....I am 100% with you on politics and music! Good music and lyrics should never include politics.
Music is my escape from politics. I sure don't want to hear a President's speech in the middle of a song. Lol. Thank you for understanding. Take care. 😃♥️
Nice video Melinda. I remember Cutler Records in New Haven hung in there a long time. He closed up shop probably about 5 years before vinyl made the big comeback...too bad.
So at this point it seems that the Mobile Fidelity visit video is permanently on hold. I have to wonder if there's some reason that you aren't able to post it?
Oh wow! If the store could have held on for just a little longer. 🥲 Hopefully, it was for retirement.
The video is on hold. I hope to discuss it at some point. I apologize for the delay but it is for a good reason. Thank you and take care.
The timing of this video is perfect. I just learned this past weekend that my local record store that I’ve been going to since 1985 will be closing this October. It’s a small indie store and the owner is retiring.
It just kills me because when all of the Chain stores, Strawberries, Record Town, Media Play all closed The Music Outlet was always there. A sad day coming.
That is sad. It would be nice if he could sell the record store to someone else. On a positive note, I'm sure the owner is looking forward to retirement. I'm grateful for the new record stores opening up but I sure do miss the old ones. Thank you and take care.
3:44 - Billy Joel's Greatest Hits for $FIFTY!!! That is BEYOND insane - BEYOND ridiculous
I agree! 🤔 Crazy!
Raspberry Records was the store I purchased at the most. Records, cassettes, and CDs. In my college days, I would start with the A's and browse all the way to the Z's. I often bought a record because I liked the cover. Most often, I liked the music when I played it. The salespeople knew me and often suggested new releases when I would walk in. Fun times. As a side note, I kept all my records from my youth. Thanks again!
I'm so glad to hear you kept your records. ♥️ So many people got rid of them during the CD era and regret it. Thank you and take care.
The so clean prayer. So true and so funny. My daughter was married at Washington Hall in Seattle. Duke Ellington played there. For the occasion, I brought Sun Records drum sticks, and during the toast, gave one to each, together they are a pair. My daughter, she's brilliant. Thanks.
I love that idea about the drum sticks. How sweet. I wish your daughter the best! 😃♥️ Thank you and take care.
I love U2! Saw Rattle and Hum in the theatre back in the day and remember people lightening up and smoking weed in a movie theatre😮 I have been trying to get all the old albums and picked up Rattle and Hum this past summer - super clean, while I was in Spain. Now I get a memory of my trip and a vinyl goodie!!
I still need to see the movie - weed free. Lol. It's great to find records that take you back to a good memory. ♥️ I enjoy this record and remember what was going on in life when it came out. Thank you and take care.
Hi Melinda! I i know vinyl is still high price lol the last reissues I bought Alice Cooper Killer and School Out on cd the Vinyl prices were 70 dollars for both copies. Same with Little Feat they wanted the same vinyl prices so the CD’s for all deluxe versions were 100 for all four cheaper. My teenage record store is still going strong. But yea the record stores from the mall days are gone unfortunately. I used to go go Musicland and Sam Goody when I live in Virginia. I hope prices are still too high my record store I go to are getting stuck with there inventory! Great Video Melinda 🎸🎸
The prices are high for those releases. I have been stepping away from records with the extra discs lately. I find in a lot of cases, I don't need the outtakes. They are cool when a live concert is included. ♥️ Thank you and have a great day.
I enjoyed hearing about your first record store. My first record store was in a strip mall on Detroit's west side. I often stopped there on my way home from high school. Once, I visited the day the Beatles 45 of "Long and Winding Road" was released. I think they played it in-store, over and over, for the whole day.
"Anatomy of a Murder" is perhaps my favorite movie of all time. It was filmed in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and the courtroom scenes were filmed in Marquette County's actual 1905 red sandstone courthouse.
I'm going to have to see that movie soon. 😃 I think I would like it too.
We never forget our favorite and first record stores. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
Hi Melinda. Always enjoy your videos. Can I ask, where did you get the Alice top? It’s very cool.
Greetings from Scotland 🏴
Hello! Thank you very much for the compliment. 😃 My Alice Cooper shirt came from an online store called Forever 21. 😃 Take care.
Hey Melinda, cool little video here. I call it the WALL OF SHAME. Every time, I visit a store, I always take a peep at that wall and it is a shame, embarrassing and unreasonable. However, it is our fault (record collectors) that paid those stupid prices that’s why the stores and Discogs sellers put that high price tag. I found Rattle and Hum (NM/VG+) at FYE back in 2006…. paid $9.99 for it. You know those days when people were getting rid of their records. Cheers JC/Miami
That was a sweet price for Rattle and Hum. I paid $20 because it has some ring wear on it but I saw it a week later in great shape for $45. That always happens. I finally find a record after years of searching and then after I buy it, I see it everywhere.😁 The Wall of shame is a great name for it. Thank you and take care.
I still have the very first album I ever bought, The Fifth Dimension's Greatest Hits. And you know what? It still sounds great!!
That's wonderful! ♥️
My Angels Horn player arrived yesterday and it’s a big improvement for me. I listened to the new Jason Isbell Weathervanes on it and it sounds like he’s in the room. Also played my og Boston debut which is a bit warped but it played well.
Thank you for the recommendation.
I'm so glad you're happy with it. ♥️ Thank you and best wishes! 😃
I was in Norway a few months ago, and of course went record shopping. The old record store you showed , in the mall, that's now a bar- reminded me of a great record store i visited while in Norway: it was a bar....with a record store in it, it was absolutely great. And, I was there a week after RSD so I was able to shop the RSD in Europe and picked up some great titles I wasn't able to get here. Maybe your old record store that has the bar in it should open that also back up a record store- it was very original ( though I have also seen this in Italy, in Florence, where a bar/ restaurant was also a record store)
There used to be a bar/record store in St Augustine, Florida and I found some cool records when it was open. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
Oh yes, that is sad. I can’t walk through our mall anymore, it’s still open, but everything that I liked is now gone. Wow, lots great albums you got! Soul Cages is still Dominic Millar’s and Sting’s favorite album to go back to. That was when Dominic joined Sting’s band. Those early Sting Albums are amazing pressings. I don’t have Soul Cages, but I need to get it.
The Soul Cages is incredible and the start of some beautiful collaborating between Sting and Dominic . ♥️ Thank you and take care.
My childhood record store went out of business over 25 years ago. Last year I bought a used record I don't even like because it was the first time I saw their hype stick on the shrink in forever. Just looking at the album brings back memories and it is the only thing I have that shows the store existed.
I would have done the same thing. What a nice memento of your old record store. 🥰 Thank for sharing!
i like Billy Joel's music. i like The nylon curtain, An innocent man ; the stranger,5nd street but paying $50 dollars for his greatest hits its outrageous. thank God i have em on cd . the way they overprice records nowadays is absurd. anyway great video as always beautiful melinda. im digging the alice cooper shirt 🤘👍
Thank you so much! I agree Billy Joel records are great and used to be extremely affordable. 🤔 I have no idea why this Greatest Hits comp is so pricey. It must have been released in the later part of the 80's and not as common. Thank you and take care.
Hi Melinda. Not sure what happened to my comments. I haven't been to my first record store. Its aà parking lot. How did Joni Mitchell know? Glad you were able to enjoy time with your family. Keep up the good work. ♥️
I looked for your comment but couldn't find it either. 🤔 Weird. The parking lot instead of a record store isn't a good trade at all. Have a wonderful weekend. ♥️
U2 from Unforgettable Fire through to Achtung Baby certainly made some amazing albums with such great rock anthems..
They put out some incredible music during that time. I also like the songs Vertigo and Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
@@MelindaMurphy yes they sure did add some more awesome songs, their longevity at times is why they get dismissed too easily as they could be considered as no longer relevant..thanks for sharing your thoughts and kind words.. take care too.
I am shocked at these prices too! In an antique shop that I found years ago I taught the sweet old lady about Discogs! I recently went back there and she’s pricing well above median values even on sub-standard condition! Unfortunately somebody must’ve written a article about how LPs are coming back, and people are pricing them like they are made of gold! I’ve never really liked Phil Collins, but I do have the soundtrack against all odds because I like that song that he sings on it! Sting is one of my favorites, and I got his box set last year with 16 records in it! Best Buy of last year for me! Best U2 album I feel was Joshua Tree! Fun video Melinda! BTW love that George Michael album! Most emotional song I’m surprised you didn’t talk about which was mothers pride! Being a mom, I’m sure you understand that very well!🎉
Hi! I watched you on a Livestream recently and then went back and watched your video discussing that Sting box set. That would be incredible to own. I have nearly all of his albums. I'm just waiting on 10 Summoner's Tales to arrive. When there is an artist we love, it's wise to get the box set though. Against All Odds is my favorite Phil Collins song. ♥️
The prices at the antique stores are getting crazy. I saw a Led Zeppelin 2 reissue in unplayable condition for $60 last week. Absurd! Thank you and take care.
@@MelindaMurphy Ten Sumters is awesome! I’m still in love with his debut dream of the blue Turtles! Fortress around your heart is like a perfect song in every way! You always have great videos, and that’s why you have the following that you do! Keep up the good work!😉
When I was really young my parents would take us to a store called Great American Music. I bought my first tape there (The Beatles 20 Greatest Hits). It didn't last very long, but I can still pick out the building today. My favorite stores when I was in my teens were Down in the Valley and Musicland. Down in the Valley closed my favorite location, but I still buy a lot from them today at their main location in Golden Valley. Musiciand was in the mall and it went out of business years ago. Today it is a video arcade I believe, and the mall is still alive and kicking. Rock on Melinda!
Great American Music sounds familiar. I wonder if it was a chain? I'm glad you still have Down in the Valley. It's a shame the one you went to is gone. 🥲 Thank you and take care.
@@MelindaMurphy Great American Music was a Minnesota company that at one point had 17 locations. I don't know if any of them were outside of MN though. They started dying off in 1987.
Is the Billy Joel LP a 2-record set, at least? The Duke Ellington label is cool; I've never seen a white label 6-eye. The store you mentioned at the beginning where you, Phillip and your daughter shopped sounds like The Great Escape in Nashville, where I bought my comic books back in the day. They, too, had everything. Speaking of Nashville, Spinners sounds like a fun record store. I haven't been back to Nashville for a while. And, I have "The Soul Cages!" Haven't played it in a long time (like so many I have). Congratulations! And, happy birthday as well.
Yes, at least it is a 2 LP set. 😃 The store we were at is actually McKays but I have been to Great Escape in Nashville. It's a nice store. Thank you and take care.
4:51 I have a copy of this but the cover is a courtroom scene from the movie. The movie was filmed in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and the bar where the murder took place (The Lumberjack Tavern in Big Bay, MI) is still open! Such a great movie!!
That's very cool. I saw the movie a couple of weeks ago. Good movie! ♥️🤗 Thank you and take care.
I thought i saw my favourite cover in the intro - [ tindersticks -working for the man ] , but it turned out to be Duke Ellington, i see where thay got the inspiration from !
That's interesting. I can see how one album can inspire another. That's one of the things I love about vinyl - the lovely artwork. Thank you and take care.
I dig Phil Collins. I have his 80s solo albums from the 80s. My sister and I saw Phil Collins in concert. I understand why you didn't like Another Day In Paradise. I tend to listen to music to escape problems.
The Soul Cages and any Sting solo record will dissappear fast in a used record store. He's a popular artist. I will be seeing Sting in concert for the second time in September.
Oh wow! That will be a great show. I would love to see him. ♥️ Phil Collins was so popular in the 80's. I'm sad that his health is declining. Thank you and take care.
Hi Melinda 🌞 - Rattle & Hum has a bad reputation in general & I never agreed with those who thought it was U2 being " excessive " I thought it was cool to combine new songs with live performances & originals with covers. I dont find it excessive ..I find it diverse. Solid album 👌. See Ya 😊
It did turn people off and like you, I don't get it. The live music is awesome and they got a couple of amazing singles from the album. What's to complain about? 🤔 Thank you and take care.
Rattle and Hum was a collection of Joshua Tree outtakes, combined with live tracks and soundtrack recordings from the film. (A couple of different versions from the film too.)
While a disappointment compared to The Joshua Tree, ANY record would be as that was one of the finest from the 80s, Heartland just shined on it for me.
Really should have been left ON The Joshua Tree, but the record was pushing over 50+ minutes as it was, so….
What a daring departure, and essential record that would follow R&H, Achtung Baby!
I buy cd's not vinyl but I find the videos really interesting. In the end it is all about the music.
Thank you so much! ♥️
5:45 - A-HA!!! So there IS prayer in record shops. That's amazing that not only is the Anatomy of a Murder in clean shape, I went ga-ga when I saw that 6-eye promo label. it reminds me of when I was in some record and video shop in Iowa (on a long weekend) and was musing about what a shame it was the Criterion Collection issue of Silence of the Lambs was out of print. My friend saw a cover that looked different than the MGM/UA DVD and I looked at it, sure enough it WAS the Criterion version for TWELVE BUCKS! From one heart-attack survivor to another, I feel ya!
It's an awesome feeling isn't it? 🥰 Thank you and take care.
@@MelindaMurphy thsnk you, ypu do the same
great video! i see you on Riverbend Records sale. i picked up both blue and red Beatles greatest hits for $29 each! did you also pick up an early Aerosmith same night?
That's right! I did pick up the Aerosmith record. 😃 Those Beatles compilations are great to have. 😃 The auctions are fun. Thank you and take care.
Great Alice cooper shirt. 3 of the records I need to complete my Alice vinyl collection are in the ridiculous range. Welcome 2 my nightmare, along came a spider and a fistful of Alice. Did you get a notice about the Van Halen mfsl Saying that you can still proceed with the order or cancel them. Of course I proceeded with the order. I still miss all of the stores I went to back then. Sam goody/Listening booth/strawberries/coconuts and most important peaches records and tapes. It truly was a rock n roll supermarket. Lol
I did get that message about all of my pre-orders including Van Halen. They are probably trying to estimate how many to press. I am really looking forward to all of them. ♥️
Welcome to my Nightmare is probably my favorite Alice Cooper album. Thank you and take care.
The vinyl stores I shopped at as a kid are all gone now. I mostly buy online as life these days doesnt permit me time to spend hours at a record store. My wife is thankful lol. We would go into a record store and I would be there for easily 2.5 hours. Nowadays with the costs going up I've managed to keep myself relatively under control. From $1100 in April to $385 this month. Hopefully 0 next month BUT ya never know 😆 Great video
We're all having to be more mindful of our spending nowadays. I could easily spend two hours at a record store. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
I did all of my record buying back in the day in Hilo Hawaii and later in Honolulu.
All of the following stores that I used to buy records from have all closed. Hilo - MJS Music, Project 3 LTD, Woolworth's and S.H. Kress.... the latter two I loved buying old cut-out 45s at 3 for a dollar. What a steal they were. Plus record albums were no more than $6.98 in those days... brand new.
Honolulu - Sears, Tower Records, Jelly's, Froggie's, Records Hawaii, Interlude Books and Records... Hungry Ear, which is the only one from back then that is still in business today. We also have Ideas Books and Music which used to be Jelly's. Record (and later CD) shopping was so much fun and affordable back in the days of the 1960s, 70s, 80s and 90s.
It's a shame that they're all gone. I'm grateful to all of the record stores that are opening now due to the vinyl resurgence. I sure hope they have long term success. ♥️ Thank you and take care..
My childhood record store (CD store at the time…) closed when I was in 8th grade and I criiiiiiiiiied.
I bought wayyyy too many Spice Girls singles there 😂
Tower Records in little Sonoma, CA. I remember EVERYTHING about that store. The smell, the listening stations, the teeny little plastic keys on the lookup kiosk…
Lol. That sounds like great memories. ♥️🤗 Thank you and take care.
The record shop that I used to buy from in the late 60s / 70s, was in business from around 1960 until the owner retired in 2005. The owner's son recently posted some info about his dad and the shop and invited comments from his former customers. The response was overwhelming; this post on Facebook received hundreds of responses from us and was easily the most popular posting in a while. So, as the owner's son said, while it's sad that both the shop and his father are no longer around, it's very satisfying that so many of us have the memories of a lifetime of MADS Record Shop in Ardmore, Pa. and the owner, Steve.
What a beautiful story. I'm sure that made the owners son so proud. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
I lived in Connecticut as a kid and most of the record stores I went to in the late 70s / early 80s were gone a long time ago ( including Capitol Record Shop in Hartford, hands down the BEST EVER - they catered to hard-to find rock imports). When I visited Connecticut in 2019, I hadn't been there since 1993, but one of my childhood record stores - Integrity N Music was still there, and was 1 month from closing. It was like fate that I got to go there 1 last time, and pure luck that it was at that time
I'm glad you got to visit one last time but sad that it is now gone. The good news is that so many new record shops have opened since the vinyl resurgence. 🥰 Thank you and take care.
I grew up going to National Record Mart. When that record store chain went out of business, it bummed me out. Then, I bought my records at retail stores i.e Hills, Fishers Big Wheel, and other record stores chain stores mostly. As for indie record stores, I first discovered them in the 1990s, when records disappeared from retail department store shelves and record store chains. Take care, Alan.
Everyone is freaked out about Walmart and Target having records but back in the day Kmart, Hills and other discount stores had them as well. I loved looking through records at our Kmart. It's a thrift store now and I still get to look through records at that same location. 😃 Thank you and take care.
@@MelindaMurphy I stopped buying records at Walmart, as I don't like Walmart in general. Target, well I never ever even go in Target, let alone patronize Target. I'm leaving it at that about Target. Past retail department stores like Hills, KMART, Fisher's Big Wheel, sold records and those stores were the type of retail stores that it just fitting for them to have records for customers to buy. Past retail stores, like Hills and KMART, were really good retail stores. We don't have good retail stores like we once had. As for Sam Goody, there's only 2 Sam Goody stores open, in the world. One of them, is in the Ohio Valley Mall, in Saint Clairsville, Ohio. I don't right off the top of my head, recall the other Sam Goody location. The Ohio Valley Mall, is 35--40 minutes drive each way, between my hometown and the mall. There's a couple of fye stores here in the area where I live. I live in WV and the fye stores are in both PA and OH. 2 bookstores, Books A Million and Barnes and Noble have a selection of records that customers can buy, only new records like you have at Walmart, Target, fye, and the 2 remaining Sam Goody stores. Thank goodness for indie record stores, if you're lucky to have one in your hometown or near to your hometown. Unfortunately, I don't have any indie record stores in my area anymore.
I grew up in E'ville and remember that RT&T. I also remember its predecessor, The Music Inn. I was more of a Karma rat, though my absolute favorite was Folz City. Can't believe Washington Square is still breathing !
Oh cool! It's great to hear from someone local.😃 Washington Square Mall is sad although the wedding dress consignment shop seems to do well. 😃 I still find records with the Folz City sticker on them. I wish those records stores were still there although now we have cool stores like Space Monkey and Atmosphere Collectibles. Thank you and take care.
Two of my favorites: Soul Cages & Rattle And Hum. I was able to score the 2016 repress of Soul Cages... exquisite sound.
They are both excellent records. I have ordered the reissue of 10 Summoner's Tales. I hope it sounds good. Hearing you say the reissue of Soul Cages sounds good is very encouraging. Thank you and take care.
I always love Phil Collins Against All Odds. From the movie 🎥. And I’ve never been a huge Phil Collins fan. But, he was huge in the 1980’s.
Against All Odds is my favorite Phil Collins song. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
I am also a big fan of the Bill Withers MOFI releases! They are great and very reasonable.
I love them too. I hope they keep them coming. ♥️😃
Hi Melinda, how can we see your entire discogs inventory? I'm so curious! I love your videos!
I think you can see it under meljaynemurphy. Thank you!
I liked Tower Records, Coconuts Records, and Virgin Record stores which are all gone now. I’ll buy mostly online. I always find the best deals online on bigger box stores websites, and saving on gas and time is a plus. Some small record stores are too dark, dingy and empty. It just makes me feel uncomfortable being in there.
We still have a Coconut Records in Evansville, IN. It's affiliated with FYI I think. It might be the last one left. It's sad that the old record stores are all gone now. I remember my childhood ones fondly. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
I got my Billy Joel collection all in one shot, a yard sale where they were selling their collection and I got all his big early albums. I already the the greatest hits on CD. I love Duke Ellington, I had a similar experience when I got a good copy of Ellington at Newport.
That's wonderful. Garage sales are a great way of finding deals on records. ♥️
"Heartland" on "Rattle and Hum" is the song I've been regularly returning to for all these years. It has great rhythm and some of that heartbreaking poetic of the beat generation. The LP version blew me away. Oddly enough, I can't find it on any other U2 albums, live or otherwise.
It's a beautiful song and another great reason to own Rattle and Hum. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
When you mentioned "Another Day in Paradise" and Bush being dubbed into the song on the radio, that reminded me of how our local radio station was playing "Mother's Pride" by George Michael and interjecting sobbing family and spouses of military personnel who were fighting in the Iraq war. I never figured out whoever thought that was a good idea!
But I did get surprised when you showed 'Listen without Prejudice' shortly thereafter--what a coincidence! I had the feeling he wanted to make this album to focus on his talents, rather than satisfy the listeners' prejudice of him as a sex symbol. It's been my favorite in his catalog. One thing that bothered me was how brittle and harsh the CD sounds--is the vinyl any better? I may seek it out if so.
And yeah...my vote is for The Police. I was really big into Sting back in the day but find these days that the Police albums bring back more memories of the era I bought them in. 'Dream of the Blue Turtles' is my favorite of Sting's records though, and partly due to the backing band (Branford Marsalis, Kenny Kirkland, etc.).
I enjoy Sting's solo work but I prefer The Police. Just like when David Lee Roth left Van Halen, I was kind of mad at Sting for breaking up The Police.
What a crazy coincidence that I show Listen Without Prejudice right after you thought of that song. 😮 That must have been a freaky moment. I agree that this album is George Michael's push to be a critically acclaimed artist and I think he accomplished that. His voice was so beautiful and this is a wonderful album even though it's quite somber. Thank you and take care.
@@MelindaMurphy From what I understand, Sting, Copeland and to a lesser extent Summers respect each other's work and are good friends, but can't stand to be in the same room when "The Police" enters the picture. They've played a couple of one-off performances for fun (I think at one of Sting's weddings) but otherwise, getting them back in the studio or on the road would be impossible. I was excited for 'Blue Turtles' when it came out, but also bummed because there would be no more Police records. Such is life! Take care!
I've had Billy Joel's Greatest Hits Vol.1 & 2 since it was released in the 80's. Discogs has it going for how much? Glad I've held on to my copy all these years!
You were very smart to hang on to that record. 😃 The prices are pretty high for it. Thank you and take care.
