  • The Music of Chance is based on a 1990 novel by Paul Auster, who later wrote the movies Smoke and Blue in the Face. It's a quirky parable with more questions than answers, but it sure is fun to watch. And until recently, it was difficult to find.
Mandy Patinkin plays Nashe, a man on the run from his former life with no particular plans in place. On the road, he meets a vagabond named Jack Pozzi (James Spader) who tells him about a mysterious poker game hosted by two eccentric bachelors (Charles Durning and Joel Grey). Since Nashe is looking to replenish his funds, he decides to put up the money for Pozzi to fleece these guys in a rematch. Simple enough plan. However, fate has other cards in store.
    The Music of Chance (1993)
    Directed by Philip Haas
Written by Philip & Belinda Haas
Based on the novel by Paul Auster
Starring Mandy Patinkin, James Spader, Charles Durning, Joel Grey & M. Emmet Walsh

I'm so glad people are able to see this gem now. I saw it decades ago on VHS and it always stuck with me.

What a film. I watched it as a young kid and still have the VHS! Why they never released it on Criterion/DVD is beyond me.

Now I see where Charlie Kaufman got the idea for Synecdoche NY from, the model world the two old guys are building.

@@hollywoodvulture It makes perfect sense when you think about it. I don't know much about Paul Auster, but I'm guessing he's exactly the sort of writer a guy like Kaufman would read.
