  • The center of Hindu-ness and Hinduism in India...
A group of priests every evening at this ghat perform "Agni Pooja" (Worship to Fire) wherein a dedication is made to Lord Shiva, River Ganga (the Ganges), Surya (Sun), Agni (Fire), and the whole universe. Special aartis / aratis are held on Tuesdays and on religious festivals.
    Varanasi / Banaras / Benaras:
Varanasi, also Benares, Banaras, is a city on the banks of the Ganges (Ganga) in Uttar Pradesh, 320 kilometres (200 mi) southeast of the state capital, Lucknow. It is holiest of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) in Hinduism and Jainism. Hindus believe that death at Varanasi brings salvation. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and the oldest in India.
Many of its temples were plundered and destroyed by Mohammad Ghauri in the 12th century. The temples and religious institutions in the city now are dated to the 18th century.

+DimitrisAkaTsouf I think it takes a certain kind of conch shell and a very practiced technique with strong lung power to achieve this! Those in India have a lot of practice. It's not for everyone...

I did similar to you and after cutting out the mouthpiece center a little bit was also struggling to get good sound. Today I tried another shankh that was at a gurdwara at a Kundalini Yoga Studio and after 20 seconds or so was able to get a nice resonance and in the next 5 minutes became quite proficient at it. Full disclosure, even though I am not very familiar with blowing shankhs, I am a long time saxophone player and 1 year yidaki / didgeridoo student. The buzzing of the lips needed for the shankh playing is more similar to the didgeridoo. You want to practice being able to buzz your lips at different frequencies, this takes strong muscles from the inside of your mouth together with strong lung/diaphragm support from lower down. I found shankh blowing works best when the diaphragm is fully engaged so you want to practice deep belly breathing or related yogic pranayam to build those muscles and that muscle memory. Buzzing your lips is how it's usually described with didgeridoo and some other wind instruments but honestly I find that word misleading a little. It is difficult to describe but when my lips buzz, it's as much because of the squeezing pressure I'm maintaining on the inside cheek/mouth muscles - contracting those inward - as it it of the awareness of me purposely "buzzing" (making small farting sounds / vibrating) the lips so they go up and down at different speeds til you find the correct frequency for your instrument. Hope that helps!

I use to know this Indian man who thought he created life on earth. He said I stole his invention which was a conch shell. But it was not modified in any way. In fact there still was something live in it. He said he welded it cut it screwed it and put some kind of goo in the middle to make it time things in cars. Thats how conch snails were create on earth when he said there be life.
