Great video. Chinatown is an excellent movie. But it is very complex and throws a lot of details at you. It really requires your full attention, unlike a lot of the CGI fests Hollywood gives us these days. You did a good job in breaking this movie down.
Thanks for watching my video and your much appreciated comment, Forrest! I agree with you on the subtlety of this great film. I've seen it many times and enjoyed it but for this video I read Towne's script 7 or 8 times, took notes from it, and read it some more before even attempting to do this analysis which still does not do this great film the justice it deserves. I believe that when a film resonates, no matter how simple it is, there are more layers to it and this film is one of those films. Besides Carnal Knowledge, my favorite Nicholson film to this day, this is my favorite of his films. Roman Polanski, regardless of his life outside of filmmaking, is 1 of the best filmmakers ever and this is probably his best film with 1 of my top 4 favorite actors and, without a doubt, 1 of cinema's all time best ever. Thank again, Forrest!
Thanks for watching this video, Ijay79. It took me several viewings and reading the script to get this film. Chinatown is so subtle that it's easy to miss a lot of its other points.

Enjoy your reviews -- you've got good taste! I think that what you describe in "Chinatown" is closer to allegory than symbolism. An allegory sets up a one-to-one equivalence of some kind: so, for example (as you say) water = truth and thus the broken dam = the truth coming out about Evelyn Mulwray's sister/daughter. That's good as allegory, but its symbolism is not so easy to pin down. For that you need to go beyond the boundaries of the work itself. For example, it absolutely can NOT be a coincidence that Evelyn's father is named Noah (!!!) -- or that her own name is a variation on "Eve" (let's not even get to "Cross"). These are the elements of the film that are not just allegorical but symbolic -- that is, they suggest some kind of larger, mythic pattern behind the events. Maybe it's JUST a suggestion: you can't put your finger on it exactly. But it builds a sense of existential dread, as if there's some kind of ... not just human, but superhuman, supernatural malevolence at work ... if you see what I mean. It's been said that symbolist art gestures at "the myth of the world." Metaphorically speaking: "Forget it, Jake, it's Chinatown."
There is an undercurrent of the racism of the era in "Chinatown" the movie and in Chinatown the place where nothing is what i seems; where a cop does as little as possible if he knows what's good for him. Pidgin English is spoken from time to time: The Mulwrays' gardener, removing dead grass from the pond says, "Bad for glass," to Jake, and Jake responds, "Yeah, bad for glass," (not knowing yet that the salt water in the pond is the key to how Hollis died.) The name of the Biblical-like patriarch, Noah Cross, is also Pidgin English for "Don't cross me."
Great review, thank you. Gore Verbinski's excellent animated film Rango, starring Johnny Depp is based on the same premise. Greed. My brother and I rewatched Chinatown last week and we both agreed it's just as engaging as it was over forty years ago.
@@godfatherofcinema mike nichols! Carnal Knowledge is a great and sad film. My favorite from Nichols would be Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf. His adaptation of Catch 22 deserves more love as well. Thank you sir. I was (long ago) I was a 'free press' quality control tech, etc. and later discovered my skill in law, etc. Although partiall bi-lingual I nearly got 'Chinatowned' by lainos in a gov. housing project somewhere in CA. Kinda like slick Willie Clinton, but I wasn't popular nor political. And I prefer (mainly) people of color. In 1999, after Bill said that he was like a black man, Chris Rock joked: He --Bill was 'like' a black man: Wife's a bitch, he got no money, and his friends were in jail {Ark.whitewater 'scandal'} VERY funny. Chris rock seriously also said that prejudice is not in the past --it's real. Godspeed anf good luck, esp. to you, Chris and Colin Koerpernick.
Hi, Phillip. Thanks for watching the video. Chris was right. Racism hasn’t gone anywhere. Godspeed to you also
You just told the story and nothing else
Have you reviewed any Kurosawa, I think you'd love his work

A vessel for Noah
LolI didn’t think about that great observation
Some of the facts are wrong: the fake Mrs. Mulwray is not blond, Jake was not a DA, water was dumped in the ocean not in the valley. This is an interesting piece but it makes you wonder what else this commentator got wrong!
