  • Sarah Lamb, Steven McRae, Deborah MacMillan and Kevin O'Hare explore Kenneth MacMillan's stunning choreography for Romeo and Juliet. Book tickets for Romeo and Juliet: www.roh.org.uk...
Kenneth MacMillan poignant setting of Sergey Prokofiev’s classic score draws out the emotional and psychological intensity of the tale. Romeo and Juliet contains three passionate pas de deux: the lovers’ first meeting, the famous balcony scene and the devastating final tragedy, in which Romeo dances desperately with the lifeless Juliet. The story is set against a wonderful evocation of 16th-century Verona, and includes a bustling marketplace that erupts into a violent sword fight, and a lavish ball held in an elegant mansion.
MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet first arrived at Covent Garden in 1965. Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn took the title roles on the opening night - MacMillan had originally created the work on Lynn Seymour and Christopher Gable. Nevertheless, Fonteyn and Nureyev’s performance had a rapturous reception, with 43 curtain calls and almost forty minutes of applause. The ballet has been at the heart of the Company’s repertory ever since, amassing more than four hundred performances. This classic production has been toured around the world and in 2011 was adapted for arena-scale performances at the O2 Arena.

MacMillan's choreography is just heavenly! So evocative, it gives me goose bumps. Prokofiev's score was the perfect inspiration and they combine perfectly! These two dancers are just adorable!

Sarah Lamb and Steven McRae are such a great pair to watch! They have such intensity together especially in Mayerling and A Winter's Tale. I really enjoy them in Romeo and Juliet too.

I FULLY AGREE with YOU . I SEE MacMillan as the VERY BEST CHOREOGRAPHER of PROKOFIEV ' ROMEO and JULIET ' . BUT ALWAYS HOPE for the DANCERS QUALITY , in ORDER to SHOW the PURITY MacMillan PUT on it , TO LET the ESSENCE FLOW . SETTINGS , SCENARIOS ARE ALMOST UNNECESSARY . it SHOULD BE ALWAYS VERY LACONIC , CLEAN , to LET the DANCERS SPEAK FLUENTLY .

    • @teresaloureiro2525

... and here above , the DANCERS ARE REALLY GREAT . BODY CONTROL , REAL NOTION of the CHOREOGRAPHY , ARMS , HANDS , LEGS , FEET , POINTE , OPENINGS . and GOOD ACTORS .

Juliet was created on Lynn Seymour whose exquisite line, unbridled passion and innate acting sensibilities inspired McMillan's vision, her influence and artistry unmistakably, gloriously exploited and evident in every step. Sadly the world premiere was given to Margot Fonteyn in the ninth hour when Rudolph Nureyev defected, seniority and marketing winning the day. Rest in peace Ms. Seymour.

How did MacMillan create Romeo? He watched Cranko's version and stole it hook line and sinker. He made some serious improvements, but it is so based on the Stuttgart version, that nobody can call it original.
