Kenneth MacMillan poignant setting of Sergey Prokofiev’s classic score draws out the emotional and psychological intensity of the tale. Romeo and Juliet contains three passionate pas de deux: the lovers’ first meeting, the famous balcony scene and the devastating final tragedy, in which Romeo dances desperately with the lifeless Juliet. The story is set against a wonderful evocation of 16th-century Verona, and includes a bustling marketplace that erupts into a violent sword fight, and a lavish ball held in an elegant mansion.
MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet first arrived at Covent Garden in 1965. Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn took the title roles on the opening night - MacMillan had originally created the work on Lynn Seymour and Christopher Gable. Nevertheless, Fonteyn and Nureyev’s performance had a rapturous reception, with 43 curtain calls and almost forty minutes of applause. The ballet has been at the heart of the Company’s repertory ever since, amassing more than four hundred performances. This classic production has been toured around the world and in 2011 was adapted for arena-scale performances at the O2 Arena.

Absolutely love the MacMillian version!! That last shot of Sarah spotting through that turn was awesome. Such a dynamic couple!
i seriously can't get over how beautiful this is. outstanding!
They are so beautiful together. Lamb looks angelic and is sublime. Macrea fits her so beautifully. They are incredible together. Both are superb dancers.
Love love love love love this ballet and score immeasurably ❤️
Literally just got home from seeing this at the cinema ❤ absolutely stunning ... Sarah and Steven were absolutely fabulous, as was the entire company!
MacMillan's choreography is just heavenly! So evocative, it gives me goose bumps. Prokofiev's score was the perfect inspiration and they combine perfectly! These two dancers are just adorable!
Sarah Lamb and Steven McRae are such a great pair to watch! They have such intensity together especially in Mayerling and A Winter's Tale. I really enjoy them in Romeo and Juliet too.
I remember seeing Sara Lamb dance with Boston Ballet. It's so wonderful to see how her career has developed! Such an inspiring lady.
Just back from the cinema Live screening! McRae and Lamb were perfect as Romeo and Juliet! Thank you for giving us all the opportunity to see it! It was like a dream :D
My two favourite dancers
+itsjohannaxoxo that kiss! WOW :)
1:10 Just like how in the text of the play, by the time they complete a sonnet together, they’re finishing each other’s sentences after having just met
Bravo! Bravissimo!
VIVA KENNETH!
No one production compares to the definitive MCMILLAN!
Assoluto
Steven McRae is a beautiful dancer and actor, he really draws you into his dance, these two on this piece are really A list, I hope they have this on DVD, if so i will add it to my collection.
I saw Romeo and Juliet on Saturday, best day of my life 😍😍😍😍
I watched it last night in Worthing. Gosh, those two are something else. It was beautiful.
Wow, that's so beautiful! It's a pleasure to look at them!
I whatched this outstanding piece in the cinema just the week after reading Shakespeares drama for the first time. To get to see the story and feelings of the characters expressed this way through these very talentet people is a dream.
I was finally able to see The Royal Ballet production of 'Swan Lake' this past February. This is the next on my list.
My absolute favourite ballet, the score alone is sensational.
This brings tears to my eyes...it is so, so beautiful. Kenneth MacMillan BRAVO, BRAVO, BRAVO!! "Manon" too!
so breathtakingly beautiful,...capturing the essence of R&J perfectly
Music and dance to cry for!
my favourite choreography for Romeo and Juliet. Never get tired of it
I was supposed to see this ballet at the national ballet of Canada! Sadly, it got cancelled. I hope one day to go to London and see Royal ballet ❤️
I love these two so much !!!!
I FULLY AGREE with YOU . I SEE MacMillan as the VERY BEST CHOREOGRAPHER of PROKOFIEV ' ROMEO and JULIET ' . BUT ALWAYS HOPE for the DANCERS QUALITY , in ORDER to SHOW the PURITY MacMillan PUT on it , TO LET the ESSENCE FLOW . SETTINGS , SCENARIOS ARE ALMOST UNNECESSARY . it SHOULD BE ALWAYS VERY LACONIC , CLEAN , to LET the DANCERS SPEAK FLUENTLY .
... and here above , the DANCERS ARE REALLY GREAT . BODY CONTROL , REAL NOTION of the CHOREOGRAPHY , ARMS , HANDS , LEGS , FEET , POINTE , OPENINGS . and GOOD ACTORS .
Superb 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Tears!!! Ugh so beautiful
Please sell the dvd with Sara and Steven 😍
Juliet was created on Lynn Seymour whose exquisite line, unbridled passion and innate acting sensibilities inspired McMillan's vision, her influence and artistry unmistakably, gloriously exploited and evident in every step. Sadly the world premiere was given to Margot Fonteyn in the ninth hour when Rudolph Nureyev defected, seniority and marketing winning the day. Rest in peace Ms. Seymour.
I loved Lynn Seymour.
I almost cried 😭
.....GREAT ROYAL BALLET!
Lovely!!
1:53 normal people: Wow so beautiful
Me: Gosh his arms must hurt
❤️
I can’t decide if I like them or Matthew and Yasmine better
Inspiration
How did MacMillan create Romeo? He watched Cranko's version and stole it hook line and sinker. He made some serious improvements, but it is so based on the Stuttgart version, that nobody can call it original.
are you selling dvd of this ballet??

You can buy the DVD from The Royal Opera House shop.Or buy it on line.
He was in Alice in wonderland
Gorgeous.....but I never understand why the kiss has to look always so stiff...man can't you guys just kiss properly?!?! Dancers have to be good actors.....what is this fear of kissing a peer? Ferri and Bocca were for obvious reasons NOT a couple but damn, did they kiss!
because juliet is 13 and romeo 15, its not gonna be really passionate
