Thanks for this. The hardest thing about brewing stout is the amount of time you have to wait for it to condition... properly!
I currently have 2.5 gallons of Brewferm Sinister Stout conditioning in the basement.
That wall is a perfect candidate for a nice shelf arrangement of your specialty grains on display.
Yeah I did wonder about that. But mounting shelves to a concrete wall? 🤨
The Homebrew Challenge Hi Martin. (is it M.I.B. = M.K. or Blues Brother) 🤣
I finally got time to make the Russian Imperial Stout👍
It looked grate and the OG ended on 1.105 so close enough for government work 😊
It was oxidize in the transfer from boil kettle to my conical fermenter.
2 back of yeast White Lab Wlp 013 (with expire date in June) was pitched and it is VERY SLOWLY bubbling like really slow, close to nothing.
A chalkboard behind you would be nice
Hannes has the right idea - go with greenscreen and you can insert anything, your fermentation details, the BJCP style chart, anything.
Yes, a greenscreen would have a lot of possibilities.
Idea for the bare concrete wall: Have the bjcp beer style chart enlarged and printed on vinyl stick on wallpaper. Cross out each beer you brew each episode.
That would be very cool. Adding a big ✅ every week.
Let to that batch sit for 6 months and try it again. It should smooth out.
The new layout makes a lot of sense! May I suggest some wood paneling.. maybe some peg board!
I love dark beers, so I've really enjoyed this run of stouts. So many of these age really well, too. I did 5 gallons of RIS at the beginning of the year that I've been very selectively enjoying, so I can let it mature.
Yeah they really improve with age don’t they. I’ve packed away a few kegs of dark beers to revisit in the depths of winter.
the final gravity means its going to be quit sweet, which didn't expect for a stout
Looks great Martin and I know the feeling when everything just seems to come along. Oh and a tip for the wall, just paint it green as a greenscreen and you will be brewing in a new environment every week. On a mountain, under the sea or your bathroom think of the possibilities its endless. Cheers!
😂 wonderful suggestion.
I look forward to the release of a new video each week. I love how you always incorporate one other thing each week in addition to the beer you’re brewing. I made a bourbon barrel porter 2 days ago that looked similar in color to this RIS. Cheers!
Thank you!
Martin this would have been an interesting 5 gallon brew as the character of the beer changes dramatically over time. This would be a great beer to try in 3/6/12 months.
I think a wood background would be great. One suggestion: put a rubber doormat under your kettle for insulation. Cheers.
I like the princess bride moment! Haha good stuff guys! "so clearly, I Cannot choose the cup in front of me"
Thanks for the Tip on the Exhaust System. #STAYSAFE
Looks great, definitely want to brew one for the holiday season. And good job solving the vent issue!
Thanks!
One of my favorite styles to have on tap. Great winter beer.
I'm brewing an imperial stout right now !!! Just a tad bit heavier on the grain bill though ;)
Me too, I have one in the fermenter right now.
I brewed an Imperial Stout earlier this year and let some oak shavings soak in the brew while it was resting for three months. Tastes heavenly!!! Will try it for Christmas but will let the main part of it rest/mature over the summer of 2021. Yes, I have an Irish Red Ale on standby in case I get thirsty....
I like your new setup. I need some air/steam extract in my bath/brewroom too :-) Nice idea, an inline fan. Then the brewsession, no sparging? Ok, then the concrete wall. Maybe paint it anthracite or a nice dark green color. Otherwise do a yellow 2/3 and a white 1/3 on top :-) Cheers
Like the changes. Being new to the channel I'd love to see you have a video where you talk about yourself a little bit. Be interesting to know the story behind the brewer.
Last RIS I brewed I split the batch and pitched US05 on one and White Labs British Ale on the other. Fermented both in the upper 60s. Both clocked in right at 10%. The S05 was good but the British ale was phenomenal with tastes of chocolate and hints of plum. Need to make that one again
Nice! Sounds wonderful.
Love from india - TN.
Hey Martin.... you're the man! .... super videos... and your new workplace is fantastic.... greetings from São Paulo city - Brazil ..... cheers!!!!!
Thank you!
Beautiflu video again! Oh please do the Mexican lager with portion of corn, yum.
If you have more issues with the drips just angle the grates to drip "away" from the beer. Make a gutter system. Well done video! I like the new set up.
look at the happiness in the face ;)
Nicely done Martin!!!! Always fun to follow your brew every week!
Planning on brewing a RIS on my next brewday!! This video will surely be helpful since I've just started to brew few months ago!!! Keep up the good work and nice new setup!
Hope it goes well!
Yuengling! Making me homesick. Just brewed an RIS for Xmas. Blew the airlock clean off.
😂
Great videos u make, and great setup. Love the challenge. 😊
On the backwall i would have used hard/tough wood.
Norway brewer 😊
Аж слюнки потеки.
I'm drooling.
Se me hace la boca agua.
Cool, just pitched the yeast into a starter I'm stepping up twice to brew a RIS this saturday, good timing haha.
Awesome, good luck!
This one, and the eisbock video, really make me want to brew my own beer. Am a little afraid this is one of these things I buy all the equipment for, use it once or twice, and abandon the idea. But you got me thinking again :) Cheers!
If you just have a large stock pot, 12-16 qt, you can brew extract on your stove. Or you can do a BIAB setup for smaller batches
It’s such a fun hobby.
Just do it. You'll make mistakes, maybe a bad beer or two but it'll make you a better brewer. It's a very rewarding hobby.
It is said that a TRUE Russian Imperial Stout is 12% and you do not crack the bottle for 25 years. I had a 12% Russian Imperial Stout many years ago. it was 8 years old. Took me 3 days to drink it. Great Channel. Excellent work Martin.
Sounds like you opened it 17 years too early 😂. Still an 8 year old stout. My goodness’
One thing you can do with the wall in back of you is to use is Peel and Stick Vinyl Plank Flooring to give it a wooden wall effect. More rustic and being that it is vinyl, it would be easy to keep clean.
Football! Football! You're English man! Great video as ever Martin.
🤣 True.
I hope you're planning to store almost all the beers that should be aged and doing some follow ups in a year or so
Another great video. One suggestion mash salts dissolve better under 30oC
Thanks. I do normally add when first turning the heating element on. Perhaps I should keep doing that then.
Loving the new setup and love the videos. Sound on this seems a little distant and deeper but not an issue
That looks delicious!
I'd paint the bare concrete wall or maybe even attach some wood panelling like in an english pub, then decorate it.
19 min mash out @ 75 °C ?
The brew looked lovely 👍
Oh, and for the wall! How about a periodic table of beer styles?
Awesome new setup!!!!
Thanks!
I used 1 oz of magnum in a 3 gal imperial and it was waaaay to bitter. I will say it was an earlier brew with too much dark grain. Definitely had some astringent flavors. Still nervous to try them again.
I think that next week it is what most of us been waiting for a special Lauren.... IPA IPA IPAAAYAY
P. S. I nearly fell of my fork lift truck when I heard You saying Premier League soccer team... 😵 really mate really.... 😜
Lol. “football”. Have been here a long time.
Hi Martin, thoroughly enjoyed this one, you are actually showing us beginners the process of brewing, I'm afraid I don't understand the percentages of grain, perhaps you could say in pounds and ounces, cheers
Thanks. The description has the recipe in weighted amounts.
A painted scene or giant poster from the show 'Cheers' on the concrete wall.
Not sure if you covered but would like to see you attempt a parti-gyle brew day. It's something I am thinking about doing. I am making a base grain bill to mash for 3 types of beer. I might need to add in some DME to hit my OG targets on the 2nd and 3rd runnings. But would like to see your attempt. As for a background, a white board with the grain bill would be a good option.
I did try a parti-type with my English Barleywine recipe. And horribly screwed it up.
To confuse people you could use the vinyl floor board back drop you use for tasting in the brewery ahaha
But in all seriousness, I would choose a green screen like others have suggested. Just means more editing for you 😧
1. How possible is it to install the fan outside with some rubber washers to absorb some of the vibration and noise?
2. As for walls: place wall frame 2x4 every 16” then plywood. Drill holes using pegboard as template like the other Hops and Gnarly Anvil 6.5 RUclipsr. Paint with humidity resistant paint.
3. Floors must be epoxy of a solid color with UV resistant urethane top coat. Floor incline must lead water to drain for easy cleaning
Oh man would love inclined floors with a drain. Just spray em down!
@@TheHomebrewChallenge , clear epoxy because you work with grains. Helps contrast against solid color. Great show by the way. Good storyline, the format is simple, informative, and in a timely manner. Thank you!
consider adding a ply backing, then pulling apart beer crates and attaching to the ply...
Seen lots of your videos and you always do a great job but I feel for you as the room and cameras look great but it sounds like the mic or the cable for the mic has seen better days. I use to use those mics but had those issue way too often and avoid them like the plague now. Keep up the great job.
New mics are coming.
I am thinking that angling the original metal in the hood and having a collection gutter in the back that then connects to a drain tube.
Need a lot more than 5 weeks conditioning. Will mellow out
Why didn’t you sour like a cup of it like you tried with the Guinness
SIT by the fire with that one for sure. Just beware when you get up !
😆
The condensation will move to the fan no, and condense inside it. might need a drainplug or an atraption that collects the water.
I do have a drainage hole in the fan. Will be interested to see if that’s used.
Russian Imperial Stout.....It blows away the competition! Too soon?
That extractor fan might need a drain hose? I can see the fan catching a lot of the steam. Just a thought
About concrete wall, print the same art that shows at the videos beginning, Homebrew Challenge. I still printed at the corner, By Martin Keen.
Conheço esse nome aí. Rsss. Curti a ideia, por sinal.
Get a hop chart and hang it in the blank space on the back wall.
Also....you prefer a better fan to the condensing hood?
I see you took my advice regards the inline fan.... shame the GH5's don't auto focus so well. Great vid... brewing on of these shortly for christmas.
Inline fan for the win! Regarding the GH5 I’ve found the AF does much better at 60fps which you’ll see in future videos.
@@TheHomebrewChallenge Was going to say for your wall you could do a photo of every beer you have brewed in the challenge so far, but it would be a bit messy and maybe not so good on camera.
I think of an imperial stout as being a lot higher than 7.7% abv. Great vid!
The cfms that fan should pull should never cause that. That duct is probably undersized
Brewer beware, know how much your grain your system can hold. I have a grainfather and people with Roborbrew and Anvil systems they can only hold up to 16#s of grain. You can replace the pale malt with white sugar or different types of candied sugars to bump up the ABV.
reiterated mash too just did one. It sucked for my first time but I plan to do it again
As a Robobrew owner these big beers can be a challenge, lately I’ve swapped 5-10 pounds of base malt for the equivalent LME to be added late in the boil (with heating elements off to avoid scorching). Has worked well so far.
Leave the concrete wall alone! That looks good and has some style
Another great video Martin! Saints and Devils? So you perhaps you could be either a Southampton or Man Utd fan? You don't sound like you're from the North, so I'm going for Southampton... Mind you, most other Man U fans aren't from the North either ;)
I've yet to tackle a RIS, though I've yet to brew a decent stout... What was your fermentation times on this bad boy?
Hey Baz. Yep, I’m the Southampton fan.
your videos are very good, congratulations!
what material is the duct that takes the steam out of?
Thank you
Just some random plastic duct work.
I never liked those heavy, roasted sweet beers. I don't know why. I feel like I'm the only one not finding them super tasty and interesting, but more of tart-ish old coffee beans and even some rust. Samiclaus and Quads however, are different. Maybe because I'm not expected to drink a whole bottle.
I'm with Lauren here and for the whole series, more of paler, hoppier beers with malty and fruity flavors.
Keep up the good stuff and make some sours!
Soon 😋
That seems like a lot of work when you could have angled the good grates and added a drip rail at the lowest point.
Instead of trying to get rid of the condensation I think it would have been easier just to control where it goes.
You add something or else before the grain. They are not listed in the recipe. What were those ingredients?
Nice, I'm drinking a Yuengling Hershey Porter right now.!👍
What happened to the Spike steam condenser?🍻
Sounds good! The steam condenser may be back soon but not planning to use it for every brew.
Do you always not use all three of the legs for the grain basket? Looks like you intentionally let it sit a little off, maybe to help with drainage?
Right. Drains better at an angle.
@@TheHomebrewChallenge I'll try that tomorrow. Interesting "problem" with the bigger element, I get to a boil before it's done draining lol
Respect from Russia!!!
Not using the new condenser? Or did this get brewed earlier chronologically than the american stout where you did the condenser review?
Also you've got me craving an impy stout now but my fermenter is full of pumpkin ale at the mo.
I don’t plan to use the condenser for most brews.
@@TheHomebrewChallenge not as good as you'd hoped?
Loaner for promotional purposes?
Hey martin I was curious do to the kettle I have and the water volume that is needed for an imperial stout. I can only hold 15 lbs of grain. I'd like to achieve at least 9% abv. Or more. Could I use Belgium candi syrup along with a few pounds of dextrose sugar? Not sure if it's a good idea or a bad idea. Not sure how it'll effect the beer so i was wondering what are your thoughts? My grain bill is literally a basic style for a imperial stout so nothing outrageous.
The music is half familiar 😂
Question: If I wanted to brew a 1 gallon batch would you just use 1/5th of the hops or should it scale differently?
I was just waiting for the new video.. Thank you.. You have a bit of microphone problem I guess with this video.. Too much ssshhhh sound from the clothes.. And the new fan is a bit loud..☺️
Do you have any advice for high gravity beers? It looks pretty pretty nice
Aerate and pitch lots of yeast.
Muito bom
Obrigado!
Great video and pretty decent new setup ! How long did you ferment / age the beer before the tasting ?
About a month
Stick some cork tiles on that wall ? ... that way you can pin different posters with each video ?
EDIT: i hate greenscreen video ... they look "unprofessional" if you dont use top-notch equipment
Looks like this one went better than the last time you brewed this beer a few years ago. How long did you age it?
About a month.
Hi Martin, good videos. I am a homebrewer from Argentina. I wonder if you use oxygen before pitching? what ph did you look for in the mash? thanks!!
I add oxygen for high gravity beers only. I shoot for 5.2-5.4 pH
Something's definitely off with the microphone in this episode. Too much movement got detected.
Hey Martin, have you noticed any difference in oats from the regular store vs the ones from 'brewshops' ? As the price difference is huge
Have only used oats from the LHBS
If you were to brew this recipe again would you make any changes?
Planning to brew an imperial stout later this month! Going to incorporate some tropical stout elements.
It turned out pretty good. You could try some barrel aging
the double unskips bruv. It's killing me.
11:45 "I take all the head I can get"
Ive notice you use C45 a lot in your recipes, i have a lot of C60 on hand. I was wondering if that made a big difference in the beers?
Go for it. You’ll just need to account for the slightly darker color.
How do you fully clean that grain basket? I have a similar one
Rinse with hot water then overnight soak in warm PBW.
Would star San work too?
Thanks for sharing ;)
So I'm gonna brew a beer, the style guidelines recommend low to high.... But yep. Always gonna go for the low end..... C'mon Martin. Grow a pair. Go all in man. Go full ABV.... Always with the undershoot
Will keep this in mind for the DIPA
@@TheHomebrewChallenge Wooo hooo!!!! Knock yer socks off!!!!! :P Look forward to the brew day n tasting!
Cameras everywhere, but shaky sound!!
Fix incoming.
What's your method for aerating a high og wort like that? Do you hit it with o2 or is it just a case of splashing the wort on the way into the fermenter?
I aerate with an O2 wand.
Please change the name of this beer.
Hey Martin, how much water did you use for the mash on this beer? I'm trying to do a 2.5 gallon all grain BIAB batch.
A little under 4 gallons.
@@TheHomebrewChallenge thank you sir!
Send me this recipe...
