I used to live in London but my fam and I moved because the cost for living in London was pretty high and it was difficult despite the 5 of us living in Newham ( I know, ew) but I have never stopped loving London and this has helped me tons and is, to an extent, promising provided my career doesn't flop.

I’d never want to move to London. I was born and raised in south London in my early years. You have highlighted the main issues I have with it. Exorbitant rents, young people priced out of buying property. A lot of London outside of central London is run down too.
To put into context, I live in Brighton and paying slightly more than the £800 a month for your room in Southwark, I am renting a one bed flat in a central location (I think Brighton property prices are too high as well btw).

Been in London for over 5 years and you can afford to live here if you hustle and are willing to work. I started in restaurants, customer service, building sites and now I’m in the Fibre Optic business earning a good wage, I’ve never been afraid of starting a new job in a area unknown to me, it’s always a start and everyone has a learning curve, my advice is if you work your way in you settle and can live here without issues

I lived in London for a year, from 2018 to end of 2019, went back home (Italy) right before the pandemic started (!!!) . I used to live in North London close to the Archway Tube Station and found a great deal for a room costing £700 with all bills included. The room was TINY but still I had a small garden at the back of the house that made up for the extra space you need (especially in Summer). On the overall, I think the beautiful London parks are the perfect escape for the miniscule size of certain apartments :)

How often will you be going to the theatre and what about the costs of each visit/each show ? Most people use Amazon prime or Netflix for their film/program facilities.
You lived in North/NW area and the average rent is £600-£750 (room rent + all bills inc). And you probably spend 5 days min per week at work and only spend max 2 hours before heading sleep.

You don't need a TV licence for owning a TV, that's a misnomer! You need one to watch live TV or a recording of a live broadcast. If you just have a games console or netflix - you don't need it. (although the letters they send make you feel like you are breaking the law for not having one!)

    • @ItsJoelDavid

I think the really big problems arise when one has a family and needs more space so rents will escalate sharply. Also in London unless you have a really high wage just forget about buying your own house. Just check the cost of a three bedroom with a small garden and see how much you need to earn each month. A great alternative is to buy in another big city where you can get work and buy a house using London for occasional trips. Civilisation does not end at the M25!

Council tax is a pain - some boroughs are double a neighbouring borough. I live in Westminster but if I was in Camden a few streets away I would pay almost double. It is a pain to figure out as rent might be cheaper in one area but the council tax pushes it over budget.
You do know that a TV license is needed for watching live TV and the BBC. If you only use a TV for Netflix/ Amazon/ other streaming service or watching catch up on ITV or Chanel 4 ect - not including the BBC - you can cancel the licence. Saves you a bit of money each year.
Also, our monthly budget is about the same! Although I do have a studio as I had three years of the housemate lifestyle and I vowed never again!

    • @nai6474

Is that so?? I think as long as you have a television you have to pain. It doesn’t matter how you use it because ain’t nobody monitoring what you’re using it for. I’m in my late twenties, have a good paying job, I live in a two bedroom flat with my partner outside a tube station in zone 3 and we each pay around £750 for rent + bills. I still manage to save £1000 every month, despite spending lots of money on groceries. It is possible to live comfortably in London but you need a good salary to enable you to. And also nothing to worry about! Just make sure to have enough money for at least 4 months rent (deposit aswell - which is usually same price as 1 months rent) and living costs to cover you upon arriving to the UK, which will give you enough time to find a job. This will be your primary source for paying essential living costs.

Since the distribution of salary amounts in London is so skewed, it is more informative to give the *median* salary rather than the mean or average salary. The median salary figure is the one where half the people in the sample (the earning population of London) earn less than it. I think it is now about £26,000 per annum, but I don't know the up-to-date figure.

It think the media salary in London is over £30K, about £24-35 K. £26K sounds like the UK median.
But even £34K is only about £2200 per month nett. And with one bed rentals at typically £16000-17000 a year, that ain't much. By 40, you need your own place. I lived in London from 1995-2015, from uni onwards. Life was affordable the first five years despite being a student, near affordable the next five, and just impossible for the last five. I was able to WFH, so got the Hell out, and that rescued me, financially. Pity, otherwise a great city, but not nearly as great as it was for people on average salaries

I wonder why salaries and prices always adjust to ensure that, no matter where you are, if you're working a typical non-management job, you have to struggle to survive. Hello, lovely video! I loved the details used, they give a good idea of the cost of life. I have visited London in the past as a tourist and I loved it. I currently live in Toronto, and it seems to be much more expensive here, even if the Canadian dollar is weaker. Grocery for 2 people in Toronto can add up to $500-600 a month, cellphone bill $80-90, rent is obsolete...$2000-2350 for 1 bedroom apartment. Transit around $156, an average meal for 2 people with 1 drink each is $75-100 I think Toronto avarege salary is around $65k before taxes. So I don't really know how to compare given the difference in currency. But I would love one day to move permanently to London.

I use my subscription from portugal in uk, and every time I’m in uk my options changes to Uk content and when I go back to Pt it goes back to Portuguese content.

I use my aunts Netflix account from France, it’s the same cost as here in the UK but it works across countries, Spotify however doesn’t work across countries (tried and tested trying to use a Mexican card and account for my uk Spotify :c )
Also I’m speechless at how you only pay £10 for gas and electricity for what a 4 bedroom flat! I pay £60 a month and I’m living in a studio :o
Thank you for making such a down to earth video, I find that a lot of expats tend of over inflate how much you need to live in places, or they completely disregard the earning to spending ratio. It’s really difficult to live in London on a low wage and especially if you don’t have subsided housing.

I lived in the UK for 4 years and the NHS has ridiculous waiting times. I've seen plenty of people suffer due to this, I wouldn't classify it as a perk although free.

We can thank the Tory government for that shit show. They continuously underfund and sell it off bit by bit to private firms owned by their good friends. They even fucked with its funding in the middle of a PANDEMIC while at the same time pretending to give a shit about the people putting their lives on the line to keep the rest of us safe and alive. It's disgusting.

Honestly as someone from North American who has lived here for a year now, with all expenses and roommates, you are looking at £1600 month min. And that’s from someone who doesn’t eat out, order takeaway or drink. The NHS is literally awful so you have to pay privately if you actually have real health issues. I watched all these stupid videos before moving here, and it’s really much different in person. Also for reference, full time work here is around 60 hours a week to support yourself.

I lived in London for 16 years and never managed to save or buy a property, left London in 2008. own two fully paid properties, looking into invest on my third one and savings are just on another level. my salary still similar of what was in London. I have enjoyed live there... but definitely would not advise anyone to spend any more time then is required, so have a plan on what to gain from living in London and the exit plan

@@humphreythegreat8088 Well is very hard to say. it all depends on what you want to achieve and what you do for a living. living location and cost is all depending on how you want to live and how you make your living. the biggest cost for anyone is taxes.

@@mariadelpilarjoaqui8900 Hi, If you work remotely then you shouldn't not have a problem to find cheaper places then London. If you looking within west Europe ( Portugal ), if east Europe Almost anywhere will be at least 50% cheaper. for me is irrelevant where I live as 90% of all my living cost is paid by my employers
