hey man, you are 100% correct that the crunch mod = dookie mod. it’s literally the CAE 3+ Crunch channel, just no cap on the v2a cathode and no 475k resistor after the second coupling cap. been messing around with the values on my clone. everything seemed correct but something just didn’t sound right. it was the 470pf cap in the TONE STACK! changed to 220pf just like the CAE shematic and HOLY SHIT! overwhelming tight low end from When I Come Around was there instantly! cheers to such a great circuit! finally have my dream guitar sound!

sounds just like my crunch mod on my channel lol!! speakers make a big difference! Think the Crunch Mod is essentially the crunch channel of the CAE 3+ SE preamp from the 90’s, and the Dookie Mod is just tweaked further from there. I know the Crunch Mod has a capacitor on V2a while the Dookie Mod doesn’t. Both circuits are very similar…
Using deductive reasoning, the crunch mod was used on Dookie. The 2nd channel of the 3 plus was modeled after the crunch mod, and the 3rd channel is the Lead mod. After owning a crunch and Dookie modded amp, I’ve came to the conclusion that they’re the same more or Less. The biggest factor is having a solid donor amp like an old JMP or jcm800. Cheap iron from clones makes or breaks the tone in my experience. The differences in circuits between the two are on an individual amp basis. And yes, speakers are about 80% of the tone. V30’s are required for the Green Day tone, but the crunch and se amps sound great with greenbacks and scumbacks as well.
Gotcha. Some guy who builds these amps in Germany/Belgium says the Dookie Mod and Crunch Mod are different. Dude is very arrogant though. Probably doesn’t want GD fans to copy the 3+ schematic and save $500. That’s what I did. The Crunch/Dookie Mod is very simple. Only costs me $8 in parts
@@miseryparty3726 from talking to Suhr and back when I sent one to Golub, they’re the same mod, they will just label it the Dookie mod if you request it. Rob cavallo had a 70’s JMP with the crunch mod and that was what was used on Dookie. The whole “Dookie mod” name came from the popularity of it being used on the record. Best way to get a crunch/lead circuit these days is to get a one off built by John Suhr in his sl68 chassis.
@@jacobgainor5219 Guess you have debunked the Dookie Mod after so many years! Makes a lot of sense…what I did to make my clone sound as close as possible to a 90’s 1959S, was that I installed a vintage Dagnall C2668 output transformer. That’s the icing on the cake IMO. New OT’s are made with cheaper iron.
@@miseryparty3726 well rob cavallo’s Marshall was more than likely a 70’s JMP so getting one of them modded would be the best bet to absolutely nail the tone, but you’ll still be missing the studio effect. I struggle to capture what I hear in the room which is 100% the tone you hear on each record.
Hi, what a perfect tone! I have a Marshall Super Lead, and I'm going to have it modded with this mod too. What are your EQ settings on the amplifier for this? Cheers!
Hey, have you opened up the amp before? Just wondering if Martin installed a cap to ground on the gain knob. I’ve seen him do this on two amps, one of them being yours (the 1987)
@@jacobgainor5219 Alright one last thing, is there a cap on V2a on your ‘79 ? I saw the sold listing for your 1987 on Reverb and looks like golub did not put a cap there. The CAE 3+ chematic however does has have a 1uf cap there…
In what regard? I do run it close to the strings. Just about as close as possible without rubbing. The pickguard was precut by warmoth if you’re talking about positioning.
@@jacobgainor5219yes, that’s it. The Warmoths sit more north than cutting out a strat pick guard like Billie did, or had done. Anyways for Dookie and before, try a Bill and Becky Wilde L500XL. I replaced my JB with one and no regrets. More noisy than JB but definitely more Dookie tone. With right speakers and EQ, it’s pretty much perfect.

Dumb question but what’s the V2a cathode and coupling resistor do?
@@anthonysclafani3963 I assume you don’t know much about amps. But the v2a cathode is the gain stage right before the cathode follower!

Got one recorded, just gotta edit the video together!

oh dumb me, sorry for the earlier comment but I didn't realize this was a different amp from the other video. Anyways sounds phenomenal!

I run my amps how billies were set in the 2013 rig rundown. Only I run mids at 12:00 on both heads.
how do you get it modded?
does anyone know what the song is called at 3:46? i've been trying to look for it everywhere, nice video though nonetheless!

This sounds so good. How did you manage tracking down an original golub?
Thanks. I posted on a few gear forums I am a member of and eventually tracked it down
