Quick video of my 2002 Marshall SLP with the SE Lead Mod, done in April of 2002 while he was still at Custom Audio Electronics. Very similar amp to the Suhr SE100(same exact circuit) but has a bit more hair and retains a bit more Marshall flavor and bite compared to the smoother SE100. Well, here it is. Finally tracked down both heads modded by Martin Golub. Both are from Martin's time at CAE. Settings on both heads match the settings in the 2013 PG Rig Rundown. P90 panned left for all E songs(for Billie's side), and a Les Paul Traditional with 57 classic panned right for Jason White's side. Eb songs are panned with a strat loaded with a JB to the left and the same LP traditi...
The Green Day Amp - 1979 Marshall 2203 w/ Crunch Mod by Martin Golub

Finally Tracked down a genuine Golub Crunch(same as Dookie) modded Marshall. Donor amp is a 1979 Marshall 2203 loaded with Winged C EL 34's. Compared to the 50 watt MG plexi I previously owned, this has more thickness and girth that the 50 watter lacked. Killer amp!

Oh my goodness this is sooooo perfect!😍
6550?
Very interesting, great work, mate. Just curious: 1-The heads are chained directly one to another (for increasing EQ and gain) or did you use some kind of ABY box for running the 2 heads at the same time but independly one from another? 2- How these 4 G12 Vintage speakers can handle 200w from the 2 heads? Thanks for your attention, mate.

I love this this is actually perfect Do u think 2 modded sv20h could get there too? It’ll be cheaper hahaa and smaller
Nailed it! Could you share the Axe FX preset? I can share mine too.
Very good sound speakers are very important is there any info around of what speakers was used on 1039 and kerplunk?
I think you might actually have the most accurate sounding Green Day dookie tones
Holy crap that is pretty freakin accurate, especially when you layered the guitars
Pretty dang close at times
Would you share a photo of the wiring?
What G12 vintage speakers are in there though..?
Marshall G12 Vintages.
Sweet mate...not many youtube people have gotten so close :-P
Can you make a video of Insomniac tones with only the SE Lead Mod?
Hey, have you opened up the amp before? Just wondering if Martin installed a cap to ground on the gain knob. I’ve seen him do this on two amps, one of them being yours (the 1987)
Not that I can tell from the shots I took.
@@jacobgainor5219 Alright one last thing, is there a cap on V2a on your ‘79 ? I saw the sold listing for your 1987 on Reverb and looks like golub did not put a cap there. The CAE 3+ chematic however does has have a 1uf cap there…
Sounds absolutely glorious! Love the tones! Is the SE-Lead-Mod the third channel of the „newer“ CAE 3+SE-Preamp or the older 3+ Version? I’ve been told the 3+SE sounds more smooth and has more gain?
The Lead mod was the basis for the 3rd channel of the 3+/SE. can’t say for sure which model is closer to the mod, that would be a good question for Suhr.
@@jacobgainor5219 I contacted suhr, no answer yet. Maybe they are both closer than we think… do you have a fractal? You could compare the third channel to this amp :-)
@@olirossow3179yes had a fractal for a while, and channel 2 and my crunch amp, and channel 3 and this amp are identical. The fractal does a great job modeling these two amps.
@@jacobgainor5219I found out: the SE-Lead-Mod is the 3+SE‘s 3rd channel. The old 3+ Channel 3 sounds way more scooped and less open. I asked the people from Suhr about it, because I just bought an Custom Audio OD100 SE plus, which is also the same as the SE100, but of course without the vintage components.
@@olirossow3179right on man! Looking forward to hearing how similar that od100SE is to the actual SE circuit. I ended up selling the SE100 and this amp, and am gassing for one again!

Hey, fantastic job! Have you considered capturing this awesome tone as a Kemper profile? Every guitarist would be in your debt forever! 😀
Don’t own a kemper sorry.
does anyone know what the song is called at 3:46? i've been trying to look for it everywhere, nice video though nonetheless!
Letterbomb off American Idiot
Sounds good! Is there a change of tranformer or it's the Marshall stock transformer? Thanks
Stock as far as I know. I do know Suhr and Golub would change the transformer if you did the se lead and tube loop mods together. Not too sure on the lead mod by itself
Would be interesting to know if you think it would be possible to recreate this with the Studio Vintage heads?
Nope. No room for the se mod as that adds a 4th preamp tube. The SV and sc 20 line isn’t really great for modding as is because the circuit boards are quite tight and busy. They also don’t have the ass that 100 watt amps have. I had a 50 watt crunch modded amp and it was a bit flat and flabby compared to the 100 watt version I have. Best bet is to order custom built heads from Suhr with the crunch and lead circuit. Everywhere else that offers “Dookie mods” just don’t sound right, so to me the only logical thing to do is order from the creator who is John Suhr.
@@jacobgainor5219 yeah that makes sense with the smaller heads. Oh, does Suhr have a crush/dookie amp as well? SE100 sounds great!
@@williamsoderlund1404not in production, but he will do the crunch circuit inside a SL68.
Absolutely perfect tone
I can't stop looking at your humbucker.. then getting up and looking at mine. Is my mind playing tricks on me or does yours sit high ?
In what regard? I do run it close to the strings. Just about as close as possible without rubbing. The pickguard was precut by warmoth if you’re talking about positioning.
@@jacobgainor5219 I think he may be referring to your angled pickup in the pic of the strat
@@jacobgainor5219yes, that’s it. The Warmoths sit more north than cutting out a strat pick guard like Billie did, or had done. Anyways for Dookie and before, try a Bill and Becky Wilde L500XL. I replaced my JB with one and no regrets. More noisy than JB but definitely more Dookie tone. With right speakers and EQ, it’s pretty much perfect.
Gahhhdamn, remind me again what song that is starting at about 0:54.
Seventeen by Winger. Monster riff by Reb Beach who happened to be using this circuit around the time that it was recorded.
First clip is the fractal, and second clip is the amp! I only used the preamp modeling from the fractal then direct into the power amp of the 2203’s tube effects loop. Both clips went into a Marshall 1960BV with a sm57 on the edge of dust cap.
Crunch mod and CAE+se are same circuit? Nice sound btw
@@Dookie191the cae 3+ was inspired by the crunch and lead circuits. Channel 2 is more or less the crunch mod, and channel 3 is the lead mod.
Would be interesting to hear how close a wall of 5-6 hard panned dts from just the Martin Golub Crunch mod amp sounds in comparison to the isolated dookie gtr sound. Bet it would be identical..
The crunch mod is the Dookie amp 100%. A sm57 &md421 slammed with a compressor nails the tone 100%. Really only need 4 tracks total to get the beefy tracks.
@@jacobgainor5219 would you consider uploading a sound sample of that?
@@jimmykrutakofficial294 I no longer have a md421, but I’ve been focusing heavily on the American idiot guitar tone, including all the post editing. I plan on doing a video in the coming weeks with my guitar sound from that album. I’m sure I could do something similar with the Dookie album after that.
@@jacobgainor5219Hey man, long time fan. American Idiot tone is 80% SE Lead Mod + LP Jr. Cab loaded with Greenbacks i think. There was a magazine article where Rob Cavallo shared some details…can’t find it anymore.
@@jacobgainor5219The Dookie Mod wasn’t used as heavily on American Idiot too. In Heart like a Hand Grenade Billie said the guitars sounded “tame”…thinking cause the dookie head is smoother.
This is incredible and my dream tone. Would be awesome if you could make that video showing the isolated individual amps
This sounds so good. How did you manage tracking down an original golub?
Thanks. I posted on a few gear forums I am a member of and eventually tracked it down
Sounds great. What amp settings did you use? Presence, bass, mid, treble, gain and master volume?
Same settings as in the pic.
This is so perfect! What speaker cab is it?
Gear list is at the beginning of the video.
Antiquity all Day!!!
Awesome stuff! Where did you find a head with the SE Lead mod? Been looking high and low for even a schematic for this mod
Scored it off a forum member that I’m on
Schematic can be found online
What song is it with that riff? 2:46
Whitesnake - Still of the night
no way. Too good for my ears
Tone is AMAZING! (Tip....maybe focus only on Bass Drum timing when you hit the downstrokes on power chords)
What speakers?
Marshall G12 Vintage speakers. More or less v30’s
Very well done.
Thanks Mel. The SE Lead amp is kicking ass!
That's the amp distortion without any pedal boosting?
Yep. Old Mullard 12ax7’s.
Spongy!
100% not as tight as people would think it is!
Hi, what a perfect tone! I have a Marshall Super Lead, and I'm going to have it modded with this mod too. What are your EQ settings on the amplifier for this? Cheers!
I run my amps how billies were set in the 2013 rig rundown. Only I run mids at 12:00 on both heads.
how do you get it modded?
Is that volume almost at zero?
It probably was. The taper from zero to one went from around 70 to 110 db by time it hit one. Great sounding amp, but I ended up with a modded 79 that sounds better imo.
This is genuinely the best i think i've ever seen on youtube, keep it up yo
Thanks for the kind words. Been working after this tone for almost 10 years.
Thats some time well spent brotha@@jacobgainor5219
Would love to see how the CAE compares to Pete & meat, seems like the dookie mod is the same thing with 1 or 2 values changed. Always wondered if the CAE is just a rehoused Pete & meat with an added 3rd channel
So from what Suhr explained to me, channel one is a fender blackface clean tone, channel two was inspired by the crunch circuit, and the lead channel is inspired by the se lead circuit. Overall pretty similar. I’m sure the power amp plays a bit of deal in the tone as well. If you use a 6l6 power amp probably will sound more like a mesa, but a plexi power amp like how Green Day runs them will sound more like the amps I’d assume.
Way too much overdrive for that ACDC sound
Yes! This is the sound. Been looking high and low for a decent demo. The right amount of scratchy grit on the top and low rumbling in the bottom end.
Thanks for the kind words! It’s hard to capture these amps as an amateur. The crunch circuit does the clarity and dynamic bright side of things while the se adds the low end thump to tie everything together.
I was just going to ask what the difference was between the SE Lead MOD and the Crunch MOD
