Great video, but a few things: 1) As someone pointed out, many of the retail places you showed as closed where already closed or in the process of closing. 2) You are filming in an area where people are either upper middle class and/or somewhat wealthy. In August many of those people are still either in the Hamptons or other summer location; particularly now since they can work from home. 3) 5:00ish pm during the week most people are not yet having dinner; usually picks up later. While things have definitely changed there’s no question about it; I think a bit of context needs to be included. On another note, I’m so proud to see at least a good 90% of people in my city wearing mask.
The UWS is another of my favorite areas of Manhattan. I enjoyed your walk through the area, AK. The number of retail spaces for lease is astounding. Sign of the times :(

I like these videos. I'm a hardcore New Yorker. Where he walked past the Planetarium, in that park are meteorites on low pedestals. I took my kids to the laser light show, Pink Floyd music, we loved it. I should get a Go-pro and make walkabout videos. They might be cool. I get fucked up and go on adventures, get mugged and shit, beat up, thrown out of bars, it's great. I got old though, can't process the liquor like I used to; 4 day long hangovers. I went all over the place in my youth. I know Manhattan best, I was a bicycle messenger when I was 18 years old. God, the energy I had; 5'8" and I weighed 120lbs. I guess those messenger jobs are a thing of the past, replaced by email and fax machines. It was a pretty dangerous job. They paid piece work, $2 per delivery. One guy made $200 in one day. This was in '75. I had a good size studio apartment in Gramercy for $210 a month back then. It was a nice neighborhood, despite hookers on the avenue. A friend of mine visiting from eastern Long Island used their services one night. He had to go to the doctor after that, yep he got the clap. To think that enough could be made in one day to pay the rent riding a bicycle, that was cool idea, but I couldn't do it. I was new guy, they were giving me the hard runs, one job delivering from the Twin Towers to West 70th street, near where Action is walking now. The messenger depot was a big garage, half the garage was a pile of bicycles in various states of stripped. The stories these guys would tell were wild. We hated the taxis. Taxis seemed like the enemy bent on killing us. One guy kept big chunks of metal in a little pack to throw at them. He said he smashed taxi windshields all the time. I believe he was bs ing though. I got stoned with them once. The job was wild when stoned. Blasting on down the avenue on a long downhill, passing cars, running red lights. I only did that once, got stoned that is, it was cool but I couldn't deal with the customers like that. The office chicks were hot, but they treated me like a bug. New York City, love that crazy place. Hope it can recover from this pandemic. I was working there when the Corona hit. It was pretty scary, the news and politicians freaking everyone out. The governor shut where I was working down. I was the company silversmith, restoring metal art and artifacts. It's a great skill and cool job, but there's not a lot of places I can go with those skills. They're starting up again. I have a house in the country in Virginia. That's where I've been riding the plague out. I'm in no hurry to run back to ground zero and jump into the fire. I hear things have calmed down and things are starting to pick up again. Getting close to reality time for me. It's been a nice rest, but I gotta go back. Yep, I blabbed my face off. NYC, it's the greatest. How are the Yankees doin? Fugedaboudit. Fun little videos. Another enjoyable walk in my favorite city...here in London the streets are so narrow we don’t have room to put restaurant tables outside ☹️ Ah...Magnolia Bakery😋..I would die for a banana pudding right now! Lol 👍🏼💥😀
I enjoyed watching your video and I liked the comments and your voice was very pleasing and relaxing to listen to. I lived in NYC in the 1980s. I know at that time, on the weekends in the non-touristy areas, some of the streets could be deserted even then. Differences I see are obviously businesses closed, less people in the restaurants. In the 1980s, everyone was more dressed up, girls in high heels, etc. It was the time of the discos. Also, at that time period everyone was a lot thinner, a lot more fit. Also, New York City was full of energy. You could feel it in the air. Being there was invigorating. It jolted you with energy and excitement. Now it looks dull and lifeless.
I'm a native NYer in her 60s. You're right. The city is a pale shadow of its former self-- and not just because of covid. It's been watered down for at least 25 yrs.
Great memories of my old neighborhood! Actually, once he gets out of the subway, he's walking EAST on 79th (towards Central Park, and away from the Hudson River and NJ).

My pooch and I took the subway to that 81st St. Museum of NH stop and went into Central Park from there!! I always enjoy when you are in places I've been. Thanks for taking me back. Next time I'll have to walk this gorgeous neighborhood instead of the park. I have also walked around LIncoln Center and saw the Kelly & Ryan show at the ABC studios nearby. It was definitely a lot more crowded even at the unGodly hour of 7 am and it was snowing out.

In the late 1960's the great singer/ songwriter Laura Nyro lived in the Manchester at 145 West 79th. The cover photos for her 1969 album 'New York Tendaberry' were taken in her apartment. Nyro was born in the Bronx. She was David Geffen's first artist under management.

79th Street looks like it has everything you could possibly want or need except maybe the current hotel situation. IMO all attractions should be discounted or free for residents of tourist destination cities.

I enjoyed the little bob of the camera in sync with the footsteps as the tour progressed. I live at 67 and Broadway so this was particularly nice to see the hood from this perspective
What time of day did you do this walk? The restaurants are busier in the evening, especially later (now when it's dark - writing this in September). Upper west side is quieter than the area below it (Hell's Kitchen). Lots of people staying home, except to take walks or do essential errands. I walked on Columbus Avenue on a Saturday evening in April and it was more empty than this and so dark with businesses being closed. Some of the empty stores were closed prior to the pandemic (Papyrus, for example). Rents are too high for stores and restaurants.

Back in the 1970s, there were single room occupancy apartments for those who needed a place to live after state mental hospitals were closed. I first moved to the Upper West Side (84th Street and CPW) with my family in 1969 from the West Village. This neighborhood was run down then with abandoned buildings for sale in the 90s off CPW. People don’t remember but I do!
And thank goodness AK. Thank goodness we now live in times were the majority of humans recognise that the exploitation of fellow humans is wrong 🙌 Appreciating the tours as always 🙏
I think the museums aren't open not so much because of social distancing, but because it would be very hard to sanitize everything inside that the public touches. Can you sometime walk by the ABC studio at 320 W. 66th street? I was there a long time ago and would like to see it again.

Kenneth: I just got to wondering how keen you'd be on bike, subway, or bus riding from NYC to Cedar Grove. A page I found said that the distance is about 17 miles and by bike, would take a little under 2 hours.

I cant imagine how its like during pandemic not to have social healthcare system in a country. System is so different there than Europe or some middle east, asia countries. Btw always dreamt but could never visit USA due to travel costs. and I love watching your walk NYC tours.
Fortunately even throughout covid, the upper west side has, to me, felt relatively peaceful compared to other areas of the city. People in my area seem to be respectful (wearing masks) and care about their area. UWSers take a lot of pride because it’s a nice family area and many generations have grown up in the historic neighborhood. Very desirable place to live, even in spite of covid.

Hello Action Kid -- I love your videos. I do have a request if you ever walk the UWS again, could you please consider walking down 69th Street between CPW and Columbus? I grew up there and lived there for many years, and would like to see what that street looks like now.
The park at 10:00 looks so rough and over grown. They really could do something nice with that such as some more tables and chairs. A lot of nice colourful plants really would make it something!
There are a lot of outdoor tables at restaurants in Hell's Kitchen along 9th Avenue, some on 8th and 10th Avenues. They don't serve food that is not fresh (as you said). They throw it away (or give to homeless in some cases).
I was gonna move to New York as a fresh college grad (2020) from California and now when I finally have the chance to accomplish my dream it's not even the same city anymore ...
I don't know why people are leaving NYC. I understand they should lower The rent. But, If people think its better elsewhere with this pandemic going on. They're wrong. Things are pretty bad everywhere no matter where you run too. I love nyc. And I hope it rises back up again one day.
Out of curiosity, what's with all the garbage bags just sitting along the streets? Is that normal for Manhattan? Seems kinda stinky and gross. Nothing to keep rodents out or leakage from seeping onto roads or walkways.
I enjoyed where you walked through Roosevelt Park. I have walked past it so many times but never went in. I have taken photos of pink blossoms in the spring. People will return to the city. The pandemic is temporary but extended longer than necessary because of the lack of a plan in our country. If the same people do not come back, others will. It is not only the wealthy who have left; it's people who lost jobs and cannot afford the high rents. The Hamptons people will be back by end of September or October. I have been enjoying the space wherever it is not crowded! I recommend that you do a video of Hell's Kitchen. More people walking around there, even though people are disgusted with the placement of homeless in the many hotels there.

I went to Rhodes when it moved from 54th and Fifth to 83rd and Broadway, back in 1980-1981. Walked those blocks many times.

Our art museum is free on Friday but it is limited to St. Louis City and County residents. Speaking of status they are trying to remove the statue of St. Louis that is in front of the art museum.

The park at 10:00 looks so rough and over grown. They really could do something nice with that such as some more tables and chairs. A lot of nice colourful plants really would make it something!

There are a lot of outdoor tables at restaurants in Hell's Kitchen along 9th Avenue, some on 8th and 10th Avenues. They don't serve food that is not fresh (as you said). They throw it away (or give to homeless in some cases).
I was gonna move to New York as a fresh college grad (2020) from California and now when I finally have the chance to accomplish my dream it's not even the same city anymore ...

I don't know why people are leaving NYC. I understand they should lower The rent. But, If people think its better elsewhere with this pandemic going on. They're wrong. Things are pretty bad everywhere no matter where you run too. I love nyc. And I hope it rises back up again one day.

Out of curiosity, what's with all the garbage bags just sitting along the streets? Is that normal for Manhattan? Seems kinda stinky and gross. Nothing to keep rodents out or leakage from seeping onto roads or walkways.
I enjoyed where you walked through Roosevelt Park. I have walked past it so many times but never went in. I have taken photos of pink blossoms in the spring. People will return to the city. The pandemic is temporary but extended longer than necessary because of the lack of a plan in our country. If the same people do not come back, others will. It is not only the wealthy who have left; it's people who lost jobs and cannot afford the high rents. The Hamptons people will be back by end of September or October. I have been enjoying the space wherever it is not crowded! I recommend that you do a video of Hell's Kitchen. More people walking around there, even though people are disgusted with the placement of homeless in the many hotels there.
I used to walk to work from 140st West Broadway to 79th & Broadway Which was my Job then Filenes Basement evry day 2005-2008
