Fabled Courier yep it still looks good today even on xbox360.great game.
The biggest differences are in indoor environments. The lighting is more realistic. I'm guessing they brought the game into a newer Source SDK and exported the light and shadowmaps into the game. Outdoor environments, the differences are mainly better shadow maps and slightly higher draw distance, not much else.
Zulqarnain Aidil Yeah, I was hoping for some particle effects or something more than just the lighting and the shaders. It's still good though.

pushpopLoC909 There's plenty of mods on ModDB but honestly, I like it when mods stick close to the vanilla version. The game's 10 years old and usually mods just add more without much consideration to optimisation. This is like just a nice update
I did notice they added a bit more foliage and just misc items through different areas, like more trash in the city and and more trees on and bushes throughout the swampy section.

I actually hate the updated version. The blue lighting made the gman sequence feel alien and mysterious, and was foreshadowing of the blueish theme of the combine.
I thought lighting and ambient occlusion were useless. Then you go play half life and realize every model is self lit with cookie cutter shadows. Half life will always be close in my heart, and even now, a decade later, it's still teaching me new things.
Nice, now I have excuse to go through entire HL2 23th time.

MadFinnTech Overrated and not up to modern standards. Half-Life 2 is still very relevant.
Actually HL2 isn't up to today's standards either and at least for me Mario 64 had bigger impact when it came out than HL2. Just saying. Still both great games, no doubt.
MadFinnTech HL2 is up to today's standards, maybe even better, no day 1 DLC's or season passes or pay 2 win, no exclusive pre-order content, no iron sights because babby can't point a gun straight without shoving it in his eye, but yes they are both pretty good games.

they should had added some fog effects and particles.
Achielles I think there are some mods out there that do that but I might be confusing games here. This is off the top of my head. I've loaded up blood textures mods and some texture mods myself and they're okay. I haven't tried this new update but I want to see what it looks like with my other mods. It looks amazing for a game engine made in like 2004 on it's own to be honest.
They should update to the consoles

You wouldn't even notice those changes without the comparison right next to the old one. I was pretty surprised how good the original actually looks. Didn't remember that.
Just the original is fine for me. It still holds up pretty well and was one of the best looking games from the ps2/Xbox era.

I have played though the first half of this game multiple times but never finished it and I got this game when it came out.

there are a few graphic improvments like pipes and the stairway railing in the apartment. there is also water effects from pipes going into water
What's to like about this game: Enemy design is outstanding. Most fun guns ever. Story is best in SciFi. Total physics manipulation. The Ultimate Hero!
For the most part it just looks like they just increased the saturation of the image and enabled HDR..

It looks great either way. For an over 10 year old game it still looks great to this day. I would like to see this come to Xbox One and PS4 as I would love to play HL2 again.

I think I prefer the original's subtlety and its use of colour -- like, what ever happened to that eerie green light in the into? -- but the update still doesn't look half bad.

now we have amazing graphics in games but phyics still bullshit
minor differences. better lighting casting better shadows, some more fog which i'm not very fond of...better colors used on some instances...meh... they should have updated the textures and overall geometry

MadFinnTech no he doesnt, there is little to no difference, the lighting and shadows, thats pretty much it, a tiny bit of asthetics edited, not much, basically minus a bit of curved light casting and some shiney floors, theres no point to this mod at all, it only goes to show people how good the graphics used to be if this is the best if can be updated, dont hate on people for being fucking honest.
There were many lighting errors fixed and an increased lightmap resolution. Under-water vision effects, sunshafts, and splashes were added. Fog has been improved. There's even more set dressing in some of the more barren backdrops. The lighting is the main stuff though. Subtle but worth it.
It was never meant to remake the game. Just touch it up a bit and be very easy to install. There should be more tasteful mods like this.

Whether it was made by a fan or the original developers, Valve stands to make money from more sales of HL2 for those who don't already own it due to Gamespot's endorsement. To state this graphical update justifies playing it again? That's just a lie. It's a cool project, for sure. I guess I'm just old and jaded.
Serak At least it's cheap and a great game, better than any 8th gen game, gamespot is doing us a service.

Barely any different while you actually get playing. Unless you stop and visually check out the enviroment, you won't notice the smaller details of things. This is a fan-made mod that's not on Source 2 and it's HL3 that's coming out not ep3

This is actually not a comparison of the original HL2 vs the Update. The original 2004 release, in my option, looks more natural than either of these. Search up "Half Life 2 Old Engine vs New Engine" to see what I mean. I hate what the newer versions have done with GMAN's eyes and the blood splatter effect.
but the "original" that showns, its the 2013 update, Source SDK 2013, that the old engine "Source SDK 2007" was alot better than the update from 2013

wow, i feel sorry for whoever worked on this, because there are alot of points where its barely even noticeable that its been updated, the light casting is about it, a few floor textures look shiney... sorry but if it was really good id have gone through the game again, but this just isnt enough to make me care about playing it again, the end annoyed the fuck out of me anyway, when you need a comparison video for an update, it just means its not obvious on its own, probably picked the worst game to update, because it already looked amazing for its time.

The "original" is NOT the original Half-Life 2. It's the 2010 engine upgrade which broke a lot of things.
Too bad the update version still uses these old cube mapping reflections and does not improve the textures at all

only update i want is ichthyosaur return to coastline as 'Watery death'. leeches are good but they schould attack only when player is relly away from coast line. at short distantces ichthyosaurs schould be spawn in numbers instead ( from dark)

Looks better but not by much :s Its a shame we never got Half Life 3 but just shows how good HL2 was for its day!
I feel like it's just me.. but I noticed enough of a difference to warrent playing through it again.. The other difference is that RUclips compression doesn't do the changes justice. Last gen games seem to fair better when compressed into videos in comparison to pc games or new gen consoles.

Original looks way better for dark rooms but rooms with sun rays and light on ground from sun looks way better in update.
It feels more like one of those pointless re-digitized of a 1970' movies, here the original Stars Wars come to mind, the new version may have looked cleaner and more realistic, but unfortunately the modernization also stripped way some elements that made the in this case the game HL2 special.

11 years later and they almost can't improve it. HL2 was years ahead of it's time. Comparing the update to the original, it's a very small difference.
