Carti's major allure was his vocal experimentation, his ability to push the limits of proper enunciation into a slur that reveals itself to be an instrumentation, which with the autotune on his voice is a synthy one. That's why tracks like Flatbed Freestyle is one of the jaw dropping moments in experimentation in the trap genre, the way he progresses from proper articulation to stretching out vowels into vagueness turning it into a piece of instrumentation. Also, he saved single handedly the oft derided technique of repetition, derided for it being mind numbing by giving it various facets. For example, in Lean 4 real he turned the repetitive phrase into this psychedelic experience such that the entire thing became a psychedelic rap track without the aid of psych instrumentation withal, as if he placed a bet with travis Scott or something. In Pull up, his repetition acts as bits of percussion, a driving force that propels the track and gives it the energy. And it is also the track in which I was convinced the man was very very self aware at what he was doing, that he was willfully going against the hip hop norms defiant. In that track, he unashamedly wore the gun and drug culture which often comes under attack in the trap genre, rounding all of it up in a very defiant, anti conforming fashion. It is announced early on in Die Lit, with RIP having a bar that hits back at the haters of "mumble rap" - " fuck that mumbling shit / bought my mama a crib off that mumbling shit" . Also, with the aid of the aesthetic provided by Pierre Bourne, he was able to craft some legitimately tender moments, like Fell In Luv, the lyrics, though simplistic, are intimate and romantic. When it came to WLR, though I see what he was trying to do here, with the adoption of a grittier sound, abrasive and dry, cutthroat somewhat, with even the lyrics sometimes reflective of thus change, talks of his brother getting shot and the gang culture and all, it is short of ideas. He is willfully throwing out many of the ideas in Die Lit, but I dont think they were substituted properly. For instance, the repetition which was multifaceted in Die Lit, is just the usual cut and dry mind numb in every other trap songs out there. It is not used in an interesting or experimental fashion. Which is not an issue, if carti is going on a more lyrical direction, which he seems to be, with more syllables and whatnot, but they are merely lyrical filler because carti is not a lyricist and that was not his appeal. It becomes mind numbing on a full listen, with the usual gun and money and how talk that you find in every other trap song. Look, Carti does talk about all that but each individual song he seemed to make entertaining and interesting in Die Lit, by introducing some idea, whether it be vocal experimentation (Flatbed Freestyle) or attempt at minimalist psychrap (Lean 4 Real). In WLR, it seems as if he had one grand conceptual idea of an aesthetic that is abrasive and dry, but which is not enriched by any individual ideas in case of individual tracks. Carti does provide with some very passionate performances in many of the tracks here, exuding passion and pain, busting vocal inflections that sometimes felt like cries of anguish or passionate highs. But the issue here is that he is not the only one doing int, in the hip hop genre, with Death Grips or Clipping, doing better what he is attempting to do here, but with the added bonus of brilliant lyricism. He is not he only one doing it, whereas when he came out with Die Lit, he was a truly unique artist. And there is the second half transition, yes, I know, but which seems like trap by the numbers. I've heard the aesthetic fine better by artists Iike uzi vert and so on. It seems trap by the numbers. In and of itself, WLR is a harmless project, trap as usual, but it is the loss of a unique sound that is really painful.

I’m ashamed at how much this album has grown on me after three listens. It’s certainly ambitious... as a Carti fan since SoundCloud, I’m kinda sad we probably won’t get the Die Lit style again. Carti always has a good ear for beats
I did want to agree with this comment in case it blows up. I used to be able to find really good/ new music several years back however YT’s algorithm and Spotify dont seem to bring new stuff. As a result when something comes out i tend to give it a few listens and this album has grown on me. There’s certainly several songs- for me- that are always skipped, but theres a lot that i listen to and dissect the layers of the beat and his inflection.
Some of the songs like "Place" were the real WLR. The sound was similar to his leaks from 2018-2020. The WLR we got in Dec 2020 was a watered down version of what we were suppose to get. The leaks ruined the original vision of WLR. The sound was suppose to capture a more developed Die Lit sound. Instead we got this vampiric punk distortion.
This album is really dividing us lmaooo I thought the album was really bad then you have people saying it’s a 10/10 and it’s gonna be huge in the next few years so idk hope they right I was just disappointed..

You gotta consider that the OG album was completely leaked. I’m assuming he felt it was necessary to adapt a new style thus the vamp and grudge vibe in most of the tracks. The unique production quality is top tier thanks to Kanye. I think it definitely could’ve used more features because once you get the same feel for a lot of the tracks, they start to get tiresome. One thing that really gets me itchy about the project is when he scratches his voice out to really solidify this sinister and hardcore vibe. It’s a good and bad thing. As a Carti fan, I really enjoyed this project a lot and I’m just hoping for a deluxe that has more features and a new vibe.

First time I listened to die lit I only liked like 3 songs; I still don't Ike a few but all the rest I listen to are literally some of my most played, most loved songs. I liked quite a few of the songs on this album: Over, feel like dyin, control, king vamp, iloveuihateu, metamorphosis, slayer really hit the spot for me. The more I listen the more I'm feeling like a lot of these tracks are going to grow on me; he's just one of those sorts of artists.

I did want to agree with this comment in case it blows up. I used to be able to find really good/ new music several years back however YT’s algorithm and Spotify dont seem to bring new stuff. As a result when something comes out i tend to give it a few listens and this album has grown on me. There’s certainly several songs- for me- that are always skipped, but theres a lot that i listen to and dissect the layers of the beat and his inflection.

Some of the songs like "Place" were the real WLR. The sound was similar to his leaks from 2018-2020. The WLR we got in Dec 2020 was a watered down version of what we were suppose to get. The leaks ruined the original vision of WLR. The sound was suppose to capture a more developed Die Lit sound. Instead we got this vampiric punk distortion.

You gotta consider that the OG album was completely leaked. I’m assuming he felt it was necessary to adapt a new style thus the vamp and grudge vibe in most of the tracks. The unique production quality is top tier thanks to Kanye. I think it definitely could’ve used more features because once you get the same feel for a lot of the tracks, they start to get tiresome. One thing that really gets me itchy about the project is when he scratches his voice out to really solidify this sinister and hardcore vibe. It’s a good and bad thing. As a Carti fan, I really enjoyed this project a lot and I’m just hoping for a deluxe that has more features and a new vibe.

First time I listened to die lit I only liked like 3 songs; I still don't Ike a few but all the rest I listen to are literally some of my most played, most loved songs. I liked quite a few of the songs on this album: Over, feel like dyin, control, king vamp, iloveuihateu, metamorphosis, slayer really hit the spot for me. The more I listen the more I'm feeling like a lot of these tracks are going to grow on me; he's just one of those sorts of artists.
We might be able to appreciate the beats and adlibs but the songs just suck in my opinion.

There’s nothing wrong with trying new things but a lot of the new songs on the album sounded half assed and rushed hence why I was disappointed. It feels like he scrapped almost every leak and made a new album from scratch in a weekend.(Album aged beautifully idk what I was on when it dropped Carti went 3 for 3🤷🏾♂️)
