Finally, a guide that defines "hand" and "trick!" Too many guides assume you already know what those mean and just leave you even more confused than you were before.
Thank you thank you thank you for stating the actual objective of the game. Too many naive guides say the object is to take the fewest points, which is just not true. At the advanced level, you will intentionally take points to stop moon attempts, make a critical lead, or save the high player from going out while you are not in first place.
After watching this once I was super confused lol alot of new terms 😅 but slowing it down and rewatching a few parts it was very clear and and the examples were great. Thank you!!!
I remember a variation/house rule for 3 person hearts where the jokers are included and can be high or low, depending on the goal of the trick, without dropping the 2 of diamonds, which still leads. Sometime known as local "Jailhouse" rules, because so many people could not afford bail in the late 80s and 90s that they would end up in jail for several months waiting for trails. Games of skill like chess and checkers, even "bidding" card games were allowed, but no money was allowed to change hands. Kept people sane. And remember some of these people were still awaiting indictments from grand juries, let alone charged, but not found guilty of anything. Makes it problematic with some efforts to charge people money for holding them in jail, as they then become on the hook for being held.
2:26 The game will not go well like that. If a player to lead only has hearts and hearts haven’t been broken, then they can lead with a heart anyway. The rule he explained is like telling players what cards a player’s holding.
Yeah, that's the version I learned (where you get to lead with hearts if that's all you have, breaking hearts with the lead). However, to be fair, by leading with hearts while hearts haven't been broken, you're still telling everyone you only have hearts anyway.
In the version I played, if hearts have not been broken and the leader only has hearts, they still get to lead with their card of hearts (and hearts are broken from the lead).
In an alternative version, hearts of 5-10 are worth 10pts, the jack of hearts is 20, the queen of hearts is 30, the king of hearts is 40 and the ace of hearts is 50. The queen of spades is 100, the jack of diamonds is -100 (meaning you want to win it) and the 10 of spades is x2 the points no matter positive or negative, and -50 is the player who wins it has won no point cards (getting +100 then -100 does not count)
Used to play a variant where ir you took no tricks at all you got a 10 point penalty. This resulted in more strategy since you may deliberately take a heart trick, as 4 is better than 10. And yes, the penalty was cumulative with the moonshot penalty😈
Quick question: You say "However, if a player has no clubs when the first trick is led, a heart or the queen of spades cannot be discarded." To whom does this rule apply, and across which duration? If a player has no clubs when the first trick is led, can nobody discard hearts or the queen of spades for the remainder of the hand, or does this rule only apply during the first trick of each hand and no other time throughout the game?
In the UK we play a game called Rachael very similar game except we don't pass cards and the queen of spades is 10 points ace of hearts is 5 points king 4 you get the picture total points on the table is 33
That's how I've always played it. Played online against computer and that's how the computer plays it. Can lay out queen anytime after the first trick if void of suit played
It's like golf. You want a low score. So winning a trick and receiving any point-scoring cards increase your score (unless you shoot the moon), but that's generally bad for you.
Scoring in this card game is pretty much like losing HP aka Hit Points. Achieving the predetermined amount of points is akin to losing all of their HP. In that case, this will knock out the unlucky player, leading to Game Over, alas the one who has the most HP remaining is the Champion.
You can't lead a trick with the queen of spade if heart havent been broken but playing the queen of spade when u can't follow suit does not break the heart. Got it?
good instructions but if all you have is hearts you lead with hearts...not pass to next player....at least thats the way all computer versions ive played are....
i thought that if you only have hearts you are forced to break them, and you can play the queen of spades even if hearts havent been broken, at least from the card games i played on pc.
Not necessarily. It doesn't have to be the lowest number you have. Just lower than the highest number in the current trick. Let's say you have a 5 of diamonds and a 7 of diamonds. The lead card is a 9 of diamonds. It would be a good strategy to play your 7 of diamonds now because you know it's already lower than the lead card (9). Later on, you might need your 5 of diamonds if someone plays a 6 of diamonds.
during the times i spent in county jails, hardly anyone played hearts. it was hard for most individuals to get into the idea of maintaining the lowest score and it was like the opposite of spades, which was often favored by the general population.
Those aren't good players then. You have to be willing to take a few points. Like I said, Hearts is a great game *IF* you're playing with people who play the game properly.
...Huh? Honest, I'm only here because I was reading the Stephen King novel Hearts in Atlantis, and wanted further details on the rules. But now I'm just... wondering why this is a game.
M. R. Newton just so you know I’ll take that as a compliment due to the fact that I love sorry hasbro has made a very cool addition of sorry I just board games
Yes you can, simply remove the 2♦, 2♣, 3♦ and the 3♣. Then deal out 8 cards to each player. Everyone passes three cards to the left on the odd numbered rounds and everyone passes three cards to the right on even numbered hands. The player with the 4♣ starts first.
This is just reading the rules from Hoyle's. A robot can do that and this guy kind of looks like a robot. The video is unhelpful for anyone who wants to learn HOW to PLAY the game
Alright so let's say someone leads with a 10 of spades and the last trick played is a 10 of diamonds who wins? The 10 of spades because it was played first?
As someone leads with the 10 of spades, only spades have the chance of winning this trick. Therefore the 10 of diamonds cannot win. The 10 of spades wins if it is the highest spade in the trick.
Finally, a guide that defines "hand" and "trick!" Too many guides assume you already know what those mean and just leave you even more confused than you were before.

Who play Hearts? Which country is this game popular?

Hey Frankie, come on out, let's play some hearts! Frankie?!
Hahaha, that's why I'm here too

Awsome instructional video, well done sir!

Yes first trick of each hand. After the 2 of clubs is laid down you may not break hearts or play the queen of spades.
@@samuelbailey1557 No points allowed on the first trick.

0:55 What three cards should you discard?
Should keep a high heart, if you have one, to keep someone from shooting the moon
I thought that a player could lead with hearts to break hearts if they have no other suit in their hand at that point.
That's how I've always played it. Played online against computer and that's how the computer plays it. Can lay out queen anytime after the first trick if void of suit played
Yes!
Why did Phillip Defranco's channel lead me hear?
If you win a trick, do your points increase or decrease?
They increase if there are any hearts or the queen of spades in the trick that was won. Assuming you don't shoot the moon.
im only liking bcuz i like computer science, my spanish name was zorro, and I'm from Michigan well done.
It's like golf. You want a low score. So winning a trick and receiving any point-scoring cards increase your score (unless you shoot the moon), but that's generally bad for you.
One rule that is very incorrect, is that if you only have hearts when it's your turn to lead and heart's hasn't been broken, you may play hearts.
The central problem for me is I just don't understand "trick-taking" card games. Not sure how to remedy that.
2:55 It's the opposite. You may play the queen of spades at any time but it breaks hearts.
Scoring in this card game is pretty much like losing HP aka Hit Points. Achieving the predetermined amount of points is akin to losing all of their HP. In that case, this will knock out the unlucky player, leading to Game Over, alas the one who has the most HP remaining is the Champion.

Not to mention that you might even wanna take some tricks if there are no points involved, so that you get rid of an ace or some other high number
during the times i spent in county jails, hardly anyone played hearts. it was hard for most individuals to get into the idea of maintaining the lowest score and it was like the opposite of spades, which was often favored by the general population.
Can u do classes?
As a spades player I'm filling like I'm being told to shoot for the opposite goal
Wow who made this game it’s so complicated haha
I always thought Hearts was only playable with four players!
But it sucks unless it's a four player game.
It's incredibly better with precisely four players, especially when all four play with the mindset of working together to try to "get" the "low man".
Those aren't good players then. You have to be willing to take a few points. Like I said, Hearts is a great game *IF* you're playing with people who play the game properly.
I think the game Hearts is best played with 4 players.

can you play with 6 players?
Yes you can, simply remove the 2♦, 2♣, 3♦ and the 3♣. Then deal out 8 cards to each player. Everyone passes three cards to the left on the odd numbered rounds and everyone passes three cards to the right on even numbered hands. The player with the 4♣ starts first.
