Used to play this game with my family. Always fun. Never heard of the Shooting The Moon rule. Very interesting. We had a nickname for the queen of spades. We called her Old Betsy. Lol. Thanks for posting.
My family played this card game from age 5 yo and we were brutal!! We always tried to shoot the moon - thats the real goal of the game how could you play it without knowing? The Queen of spades we of course called her the bitch.
@@xanaduxanadu3605 Didn't read the rules enough. Oh well. That was a long time ago and we were just playing for fun. Even the computer game doesn't tell you all the rules. Calling The Queen of Spades "The Bitch." LMAO. That's funny.
That’s funny because a lot of people give the queen of spades in Hearts different names around the world: Black Lady, Black Widow, Slippery Anne, Rickety Kate & Black Maria
Good solid explanation. The rules you explained are spot-on to the rules I learned in my college days. I agree the music is a little loud and I suggest dropping the music altogether. Nonetheless I say "thank you" and tip my hat for a job well-done.
Haven’t played this game since 2010. Man was this a fun game to pass the time in the joint. Hearts, spades, Casio etc. gotta teach my wife and kids these types of card games. I forgot a lot of them once I got out and turn my life around. As shitty as being locked up was, cards, chess and bones was some good times!
I kind of agree that players normally want to pass their high-ranking cards. However, sometimes players want to void theirselves of suit (except spades) if they only have three or less cards of that suit.
Watched another instructional video before this on how to play hearts and my head was swimming a bit. I watched this video and it makes a lot more sense.
Avoid getting the “Queen of Spades and getting “Cards of Hearts!” If you don’t get both of that, you “Shoot the Moon.” Also beginning the game, pass 3 cards.
Question. For the fourth hand where card passes can not be done, if you are somehow dealt all 13 hearts, what can you do since hearts can't be played for the first trick of that round? Do you forfeit your hand or do you have to play a heart?
The gun range has a target of randomized playing cards. I want to dump an entire box of 50 rounds on the queen of spades. But I think that's what she wants. And I don't want to give her the satisfaction.
Here's what I don't understand. Why would you ever play your highest card? If you play your highest card...you "win" the trick...except..if you win a trick you get all the cards and points...which means...you will lose the game. Seems best to always play your lowest and never win. Then...you actually win. What am I missing? I'd think if the goal is to have no points, then the player with the worst card should take the trick, thus giving them the most points causing them to lose.
Adam Marisett because you are forced to follow suit. Losing tricks is definitely better, but you will not always be able to “lose” the trick, especially since the winner of the trick gets to decide what suit to play
Only tricks with hearts actually count for points, so it's okay to win tricks that don't have any hearts. If you're trying to shoot the moon, you need to win all of the hearts and the Q♠️, so you'd want to do all you could to win tricks.
Not to mention if you expend all your low cards and only have high cards while the points are being played then you are stuck with all the remaining cards. Sometimes it's best to sacrifice and gain a few points to ensure that you don't start and avalanche of opportunities for others to dump their points on you in later hands.
I've only ever shot the moon once, and it was completely by accident. (I was about 6 or 7 years old, playing on the computer, and didn't know what I was doing.) Now that I know how to do it, I've never done it. Between the two, however, I prefer spades over hearts. In spades, you do want the spades. In this game, you don't want the hearts.
This kind of sounds familiar to the game of Spades but is more like a suicide game where you want to score the least amount of points to win. That's if I'm understanding correctly. Sounds interesting but complex at the same time.
can someone please tell me what he meant by "hands"? Does he mean at the beginning of each card dealings, we have to pass 3 cards to the other players? (I am not a Native english speaker)
So I’m a little confused, when you say each heart is one point, does that mean If I take the trick with a 7 of hearts do I get seven points or just the one point?
yes. our family played this way - deal out the deck and if there are cards left over (like if you are playing 5 people) put those extra cards in the middle face down. We called that the "kitty". Whoever took the first hand also took the kitty. It gave you a power so to speak, because only you knew what was there - maybe a heart (so someone couldn't shoot the moon!) If the 2 of clubs happened to be in the kitty, we would start with the 3 of clubs.
Hearts is unique on so many levels. Here are the reasons why: - In this game, you want to avoid taking tricks containing bad cards in them. - You don’t want points. - The player left of the dealer doesn’t go first, instead the player with the 2 of clubs does.
@@GatherTogetherGames And what does TRUMP card or TRUMP suit mean? And also the meaning of "TRICK TAKING". Now I know these are basics of a card game but still I'm a beginner 🌚

@Little Bit Yes but thats the fun of it !You avoid winning a trick with hearts in it.But also inspades you can win a trick by throwing a spade if you dont have the suit that has been lead whereas in Hearts the guy that lead will win that trick if a heart is thrown on it,so i suppose that confuses people. But also in spades sometimes you avoid winning a trick after youve hit your bid so it kinda has that in common.anyway both great games to play but Hearts is way more fun cos of the Queen of spades!
When we played this Shooting the Moon either assigned 26 points to all other players or you got to reduce your own score by 26 points. See you didn't talk about Shooting the Sun. To Shoot the Sun you have to win every trick in the round. If you do so you reduce your score by 52 points.
I played hundreds and hundreds of games of hearts - over probably 20 years. I only ever had a good enough hand once, after the pass, to do this. several times I could have done this if I hadn't had to pass, but life's just not fair.

Well, since you have to shuffle the cards, this would hardly ever happen.
@leoli2284 Yes however it is still possible although very little chance of actually happening. But say hypothetically it did occur what would u do?

Nice. Thanks.
What about the option of subtracting 26 point from your score rather than giving 26 points to your three opponents?
That's the new Moon variant I think. He explains the old moon variant.
What If I cheat and said I cant follow suit to get rid of my hearts?
you'll go to hell
Eventually they'd find out since you would have to play the card later in the game
And then they'd know that you could have followed suit
Why is that in the beginner section ? I would say its medium.
Does the first card played have to be the 2 of clubs?

Based on the suit. Whatever suit was played to start the trick, if the king is the same suit as the starter, then they take it over any other king.
