I played a variation on this a lot back in the day that I think improves on it (apart from having a different suit order, A and 2 are always high, and including jokers as the highest card, colour joker beats colourless joker). Main difference was that you didn't have to play a five-card combo for the larger combos, you could play a straight of 3 (minimum), a straight of all cards (a "dragon"), or a straight of doubles. flush, full house and straight flush didn't exist. A four of a kind (no need to have a fifth card) is a "bomb" and beats any combo except a higher bomb, and is the only combo playable on any other. Any other combo "locks you in" to that combo and can't be beaten, eg a single 3 requires a singles response, no dragons in response. I think this prompted more strategic play as you had to think carefully about breaking your combos to "follow combo", knowing your opponent might rail you with a ten-card straight right after, and you often benefit from not playing your biggest combo to have a response later. Great game.
This reminds me of a game called Gang Of Four, a shedding game that uses most poker combinations. One big difference is that in Gang Of Four a 4 of a kind beats all hands and the only hand that beat it is a 5 of a kind. I really like Gang Of Four and while you can make that game, using two deck of cards, it is nice to see a very similar game that only requires a single deck of cards.
The cool thing is, you can play a lot different house rules with Big 2. You can add jokers that are wild, or play that Four of a Kinds are “bombs”. There are many different house rules out there.
Many say it is best at four. With three players, deal 17 to each player. Whoever is dealt the 3 of diamonds gets the extra card . If no one has the 3 of diamonds, the person with the three of clubs gets the extra and so on. For a two player game, deal 17 cards per player, and set the rest aside. They are not used for the round. Whoever has the lowest card goes first.
