  • This well known Turkish song was very popular among Anatolian Greeks and Armenians. It was recorded with Greek lyrics in 1960 by the popular laika duet of Manolis Angelopoulos and Yiota Lydia. The two Turkish versions presented here were both recorded in Greece - the first in 1960 by Ali Ugurlu as part of a series of 45 RPMs issued by RCA Victor and Olympic with Greek Anatolian musicians. The second Turkish version is a collaboration CD between the Turkish singer Dilek Koc and various Greek musicians produced by Music Corner in Athens. The second Greek version is a recording by the former Ethnic Folk Arts Center of NY of the Greek Pontian Papadopoulos Family Orchestra. Lazaros Papadopulos was at first a zurna player and then a clarinet player. His roots are among the former Pontian communities of the Siva/Sevastia region.

as a Greek, I have to say my great grandmother's small story: Every Sunday, Turk and Greek women, untill 1922, used to cook and sing together, inside theirhomes or outside. the ownership of the house was irrelevant as soon as, the doors were open!

@Brek Malotta What you are saying is not correct. Back in 1900 many groups of armed gangs were fighting turkish forces and attacking local villages all around anatolia. These gangs were provoked and organized by many foreign nations like France, England and Russia which then planning to share the Ottoman empires lands. Their plan was to create homelands for Armenians at the eastern anatolia, pontus Greeks at eastern and middle blacksea, for Greeks at the eagean (izmir etc) and lands for kurds and arabs at the south-eastern parts of the empire. To realize their plans they were continously using local minorities (Armenians, Greeks later Arabs and Kurds). etc. etc...

    • @mraskent
      @mraskent 4 года назад +3

@Brek Malotta I am not saying that Ottoman empire was the most democratic state of its era. You have to evaluate the facts according to their time, actual context and circumstances... The imperials such as British empire, France , Russia tried to conquer the Ottoman territory by provoking and colloborating with local minorities, History is repeating itself: look at the same territory now the kurds are being used for the same purpose.; check the situation in Irak, Syria, Afganistan. Again imperials are on the stage.. Those events happened about 150-200 years ago. dont forget what happened in Germany 70 years ago and İn Bosnia 25 years ago, without forgetting the shame of christmas in Cyprus in1963. cyprusscene.com/2013/12/22/cyprus-the-shame-of-christmas-1963/
Here is another viewpoint about Hamidian Troops also from vikipedia:
Hamidiye Regiments or Hamidiye Light Cavalry Regiments, Ottoman Sultan II. The work of Abdülhamit in the Eastern Anatolia Region was started in 1890, and it was the Ottoman troops that were actually established in 1891. The troops were mostly Sunni Kurds, [1] but included Circassians, [2] [3] Turks, [4] [5] Turkmens [6] and Yörük [7] who lived in Eastern Anatolia.
After the Armenians presented the "Project on Armenia" to the Berlin Conference on June 13, 1878 and this project was welcomed, acts of terror and massacre within the borders of the Ottoman State accelerated. Armenian Hinchak and Tashnak organizations turned into regular army. Russia was expressing its ambitions for the "Eastern Provinces" and had started preparations for occupation. II. Abdülhamit, under the name of eastern issue, reforms demanded by European states, autonomy and independence for Christian subjects; He thought it meant weakening and fragmentation for the Ottoman Empire. He decided to create armed forces from the public "against the security of the public order, the treatment of the Armenian chaps and murderers and the Russian occupation" in the region. For this reason, after 1890, he established the Hamidiye Regiments to prevent the establishment of an Armenian state in Eastern Anatolia.
      Foundation reasons
Apart from official sources, the reasons for the establishment of Hamidiye Regiments differ. A.D. Lazarev explains the reason for the establishment of the regiments on page 151 of his book, The Dream of Kurdistan and the Kurdish Question:
"In addition to the aim of making the Kurds strong military guard against Russia and the means of attack against Iran, with the Hamidiye Regiments, one of their important goals was to accustom the Kurds under the strict supervision of the Turkish administrative authorities. However, the rising freedom movements of the Christian national minorities, especially Armenians, was established to use against. "[8]
Nihat Gültepe explains the purpose of the establishment of the regiments as follows:
"With the establishment of the Hamidiye Regiments, the following is aimed: To make use of the tribes taken into military discipline as law enforcement forces for Eastern Anatolia, to form regular cavalry troops, to create a ready-made force against a possible Russian invasion, to bring the elements that are open to external incitement and open to rebellion, Settling tribes and civilizing them, educating them by disciplining them, ending tribal fights, using all potential in this direction in favor of the state, and working for the development of Eastern Anatolia by doing roads, bridges, school buildings etc. "

Beautiful music. No matter what anyone says, Greeks and Turkish people share so much, our food, our music, our dancing, even our blood. Now, at least there has to be peace between us , for the sake of the Aegean Sea and humanity. Greetings from a Greek lady.

I understand everything you wrote. Just a little note, Greece is geographically considered a country of Southern Europe, with the Aegean Sea lies to the east of mainland Greece, the Ionian Sea to the west, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south, so Greeks are Europeans. I also wish you the best of luck that someday all these cultures may live together in peace. regards,

I 'm a Greek living in the USA. I have many Turkish friends and they all are very nice people. Greeks and Turkish have many things in common, music is one of them. Also, being together since 1400 AD, there have been marriages between both, so whether we like it or not we are related too. Our governments may have their differences but we (the people) should not.

Greek army and Greek gangs massacred thousands of ethnic Turks in Western Anatolia a hundred years ago. They raped our women, gouged out our children's eyes, tortured our elders. There are many photographs from those times in the archives. Three-quarters of a great Ottoman city like Manisa was killed in those massacres. That's why our ancestors hated the Greeks, and we still don't love you. We have suffered greatly in Anatolia in the last century. Your ancestors occupied Anatolia a century ago. May the Greek government accept the massacres committed by the Greek army in Anatolia! However, if this happens, the Turks will respect the Greeks.

Thank you so much to the person who posted this. Both my Greek Great Grandparents and Grandparents lived in Turkey until the exchange in the 1920's which was a dark time in history for many. I am grateful and happy to say my parents made it back to Greece as very young children through this troubled time. War is never good regardless of which country and at what time, it is always the innocent who suffer from all sides. Nevertheless I can see in my memory's eye, my grandmother dancing to this tune at celebratory occasions. The music and food of this region is shared and loved by both nations and in fact you can go even broader and say the music and food is also shared throughout the Mediterranean by all the nations in that region. Just a thought to note - if we go back far enough we are all related through Noah and his family or even further back to Adam and Eve. Thank you again for the memories of a very special, very much missed and very loved Grandmother. God bless you.

Couple years a go when I visited to Lesbos where my grandmother had borned, a priest realised that me is Turkish, came to next to me and talked to me in English tearfully. Before I leave from his table, he whispered to my ear that in Turkish "God is Love" Allah Aşktır. That explains & includes everything about peace, religious, friendship, humanity etc. Please just try to impose to the next generations that we are so close to each other. Turks & Greeks will be friends forever despite politicians.

We are different nationalities, we just share some cultural characteristics because we have been living close for so many centuries, and all these songs are from Minor Asia where we were living together before the war. But this is a double edge sword so let's not talk about it and keep the comments as positive as possible. We did have lots of wars between us and the war turns humans into beasts, we had all been engaged into atrocities and we are all kind of mixed up but we can still have a great time together because this is what music is about. You all have to admit that We both have great songs and food guys, don't we? Is it the Mediterranean sea? Peace

Even the name Ottoman sends chills in the hearts of people of the Balkans. While it's true, Turks and Greeks have much in common, there are many ways in which Greeks are also similar to other Europeans. The Greeks are far more liberal than the Turks. That much is clear. Leftist groups are far more prominent in Greece in comparison to Turkey. Turkey is much more capitalist and religious.
