I love that Tammy not only lent her vocals to the song, but she also appeared in the music video. ❤
Just a brilliant collaboration from the 90's 😉🇬🇧
There is an interview with her somewhere on RUclips where she tells the story of how it happened. The face she pulls when she explains that someone called her to be in the song and videoclip singing the main lyrics of a Eurodance-act song, and she said "Are you sure you have the correct number?" :P (Also interesting to know that she had not been the first choice when it came to the artist, and that the KLF came to her was merely because their first artist of choice refused the request, but can't remember who it was).
✨✨✨
@@Dutch3DMaster Interesting fact is that this song had already been released in Europe (but with different vocals, which were more fluid without Tammy's country style). However Tammy's addition is what made the song famous in the US.
@@edwieIndeed. Maxine Harvey did the vocals on the European single, and then Tammy was included in the US single, which quickly also started selling in Europe.
Personally I do like Maxine's version better, but Tammy made it truly memorable and much more unique.
This is one of the weirdest musical collabs of all time and it worked amazingly well. I've always loved this track.

Tammy’s voice is beautiful and unmistakable. The combo of her vocals and these wicked beats was a match made in Mu Mu Land.
Probably the most unusual-but successful-duets ever. The KLF really shocked everyone when we all heard Tammy's voice come out. But it worked!
I enjoyed this song in my teens, but listening to it again in middle age I realise what a remarkable work of fusion music it is; that incredible, repeating guitar hook; the Africanised chants; the hip-hop elements; and all overlaid with country guitar and Tammy Wynette's vocals. Jesus Christ, what mad genius came up with this?
Must have been the Brits...
The KLF...Bro
It’s the fact they even had the balls to ask Tammy Wynette and the fact that she said “yes” that tickles me every time.
Bobby Tate Hi, my friend, I just had to comment upon your own comment. I recall this song from the 1990's, but never before saw the video until today (I tend to procrastinate, lol). But I was struck by the fusion and mix of styles as well, and when you made mention of Jesus Christ, take note of the wicker man burning at 1:18. I was immediately reminded of the 1973 "Wicker Man" film wherein Edward Woodward screams out, "Oh, Jesus Christ!" Hope this tiny tid-bit adds to the fun of this clip!

if they were to do this live, i wouldnt mind seeing Reba McIntyre step in her place, her voice would be worthy, and she's just as fun :)
It is hilarious, but Tammy didn't get the beat of it AT ALL when they recorded her part, so they needed some production magic to make her vocal fit. Back in the early 90's this was not an easy thing. Thanks to the Cocaine & Rhinestones podcast for this valuable info. i have always loved this song

"Fishing in the rivers of life" is a reference to Walden by Henry David Thoreau. So, mid 1800s literature is in that mashup list too ;)
BTW: The name KLF, Mu, and a ton of the imagery is a reference the Illuminatus Triology.
“They’re justified and they’re ancient and they drive an ice cream van”…this is so great!!!
"Justified" appears in Ancient Egyptian monuments. Maa Kheru (Ancient Egyptian: mꜣꜥ ḫrw) is a phrase meaning "true of voice" or "justified".

Having Miss Tammy Wynette is wonderful in so many ways. "Stand by your man" is one of my karaoke songs. Love her.
From everything I've heard, there was a hell of lot of legit love and respect involved in them asking her. Reportedly, she didn't quite "get" the final product (who did?), but did recognize the tour-de-force of skill on display and had a good time doing it.
