I have fresh machined 1974 sbc block and heads. Bought felpro gasket set supposedly premium and the head gaskets are just steel shim stock (.015” thick). Inquired with felpro and they said to use a spray on sealant (such as the copper coated sealant). So that’s straight from felpro for the 7733SH1 steel head gaskets.
What about the notched LS heads? My buddy and I rebuilt his 5.3 that has notched heads and used MLS gaskets and it leaks coolant externally. Found out you can’t do that lol
I have a 97 s10 4.3l x motor thats what i drive to pick up parts for my 2002 seabring 2.7 l convertable. the s10 got 220000 miles the long block is solid 40 to 50 psi oil preasure it was 50 new.
Do heads have to be re milled every time Athena head gaskets are changed? We've been running ls9 head gaskets at 26 lb of boost. how much boost can we run with Athena?
Hello Daniel, I am a Performance Sales Representative at Athena-SCE. I just happened to see your comment. We recommend a 2-3 thou pass on the heads when the gaskets are changed. Also, on the LS9 we have witnessed numbers of at least 40 PSI of boost on that particular platform. I highly recommend the Vulcan Cut-Ring for your application and Scoggin Dickey is a great place to purchase those at. Feel free to call me at 931-398-2204 if you have questions or would like a part # to order from SDPC.
In most instances they shouldn't be as there's already a layer on the headgaskets that help promote sealing. Now, if your Head and Block surface is not optimal, and the RA finish isn't up to spec you might need to hit the layers with copper gasket spray. I had to do it on a 3800 V6, and it seems some older 3.8 Grand National guys have had to do it in the past as well.
So you referenced LS1s coming with MLS gaskets, I’ve taken many of the early ones apart (specifically f-bodies) and I don’t think the early stuff used MLS.
@@allanb3222 some of these heads have a notch on the exhaust port side of the heads where the meet the block... i would imagine its there for a point to pry the head off for gasket replacement. Id heard that you cant use the mls gaskets as they will fail at this point. I was curious to find out if it was true. If i could figure out how to post a picture on here id show you a side by side shot
If you cannot find an MLS gasket with the cutout for the notch, then a composite is fine. As an aside, we do not recommend using notch heads if you're boosting it.
10👍's up SDPC thanks again for taking us all along with you for the great news and tech tips

Should mls gaskets be prepped with copper spray?
