This is so so helpful, I was having a lot of trouble finding resources for Canadian small businesses but this is perfect!!
thank you SO much for this video!! you just saved me a ton of money !! i was having such a hard time finding a cheaper and more efficient alternative of shipping from home rather than having to go to canada post every week !!! 💘
Thank you so much! Ive been going to Canada Post for almost a year to ship my parcels and I knew there was an easier way with Canada post. However, the people at Canada Post were so confusing it just steered me away! You really simplified the process and once again thank you! I always thought I needed a label printer in order to print the shipping labels but I guess not! NO MORE DUFFLE BAGS OF PARCELS THANK GOD!!!!!
I have found that the canada post employees aren't very knowledgable in that area, they can never answer my questions. I'm glad I could help!
Had a pretty bad experience today with canadapost, tried using the snap ship feature for small business. Got an email with the header/title/subject that starts with "Don’t have a printer?" a full-service post office will print them for you. So decide to try that.
Went to two different post offices that were unable to do this task.
Can you do a video using etsy Shipping labels and sending to USA also how to fill out customs forms ? Thx
I'm thinking about setting up a shop but the shipping aspect of it stresses me out. Thank you for showing everything step by step!! It's such valuable info 🙏🏻🙏🏻
it can be stressfull but when you first start out you have the chance to go order by order and just take your time :)
Thank you so much for posting this! This really helped me! Been really hard finding advice for living in Canada and trying to start a small business. Keep it up with the great videos! 👍
Very useful and wonderful video, thank you so much! Re-opening my Etsy shop after 18 months break, and preparing to use Chit Chats for the first time. Just one thing that could help save a precious time: if I remember well, in order to avoid printing unecessary info from shipping labels, I was just selecting the exact part I wanted to print and then clicked "print the selected section" in my printing window. Or use the zoom out and select "print actual view" or something like that. Very simple. Your patience and your dedication are amazing and show how Etsy's sellers are very much involved in their work and they are (we are) most of the time hard workers. Thank you again:)!
yes you could do that as well! I was trying to put 2 on a page so they would print in the right spots for a 2 label sheet
Great video! I’m in Hamilton, and I use Canada post! I will check chit chat out for us delivery’s! Shipping is always expensive! I’ve been shipping for over a year now, and always looking for cheaper ways to ship! Thanks for this informative video!!!!!
It is cheaper, I just wish they had more locations because that can be the most annoying part with them.
there is a similar 3rd party courier service in Hamilton called Stallion Express. Same idea as ChitChats
Thank you so much for this video. I have been trying to open my Etsy shop for the longest time now but for some reason the shipping aspect of it has been stressing me out . This really , really helped,. Thank you!
A very useful video for every seller, thank you for such content!
Thank you! Im just starting an etsy shop and understanding how shipping works was stressing me out but this video answered all my questions!
that's amazing! Glad I could help :)
Thank you for making this video this really helped me. I was just wondering where do you get your boxes for shipping. Thanks in advance for your help
I just started my online business and I know nothing about shipping this helped a lot but I am still confused.... why do they make it so hard LOL I think I will just let them do it for now then when I get more orders I will figure that out with your help here ty
ya, I suggest for a bit just going to the post office yourself until you have too many orders to take with you
It’s one of the biggest learning curves I think. I’m in the same boat. A year in and still tryna figure out how to get cheaper shipping. This why I’m here now lol I need better shipping rates 😫
Thank you so much for this information. I am just starting a small business. I will say, I have never heard of Chit Chat. I live in Niagara Falls.
This was sooooo helpful thank u!!!!!!!!
thank you so much for creating this video! This was very helpful.
So glad to know I am not the only one doing this, instead of photoshop I use Illustrator to open and crop the pdf files.
I've updated my process to something much quicker.. I don't print on my inkjet printer, I got a thermal printer and use adobe reader to print them (there's a video on that).
@@SarahTypes ohw that would be helpful, I was searching on youtube how to do it because I was planning to buy the label printer to skip this process, printing, cropping, cutting, repeat lol...thank you so much I will look into you other video
This was so helpful! Thanks for sharing.
Very informative, thank you! Just found out they opened a location in my city in March so ^_^
Thank you Sarah for this.
I'm definitely going to start incorporating Chit Chats into my shipping along with Canada Post, thanks for the info 👍
Thank you for the video!! I noticed you had an issue with the USD on Etsy. I also had this problem, basically they bill you in USD. It doesn’t have anything to do with your shop just Etsy bills and pays in USD through conversion rate. The one thing that sucks about postage through Etsy is that they take a fee !
ya i've decided to stick with doing it myself, I feel like I have more control that way
Printing on a heat printer only requires that what youre printing is on 4” x 6” paper format. So the time it takes to crop the canadapost labels to fit on the sticky papers would be the same as to make them fit a heat printer. If you use a platform like shippo you can download those in that size already so they go directly to the heat printer.
ya, I upgraded my process and use a 4x6 thermal printer now :)
This was Super helpful!
I use Chitchat too for my small business! ❤️
What has your experience using chitchat been like? What's the hardest part?
So helpful Sarah! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you, so helpful!
This was great I’ve have this issue as well, I think the brother thermal paper works I believe the software they use is formatted to use with Canada post. I haven’t tried it yet but I’ve ordered the printer to test it out
Hey! Did you try it out? Curious to know if it works
Good video 👍🏻 If the package isn’t too big and is light could you not just use stamps?..
What a great video! Thanks.
I am so cuffuffled, lolol. I have not started shipping. I feel very overwhelmed!
I have the same things with the Etsy postage being billed in USD. I get postage from Etsy because it links with my small business account meaning I still get the discount but now that I'm see this video and some comments I might have to start doing it myself on Snap Ship or Chit Chats. I really want to start using Chit Chats because theres a location quite close to my house but I just don't think I have the volume yet to start using them since I would need to get a ride. Luckily they're open on Sundays though so it won't interfere with my day job!
this was fire, thank you
Tell me what is not cheap in Canada.
So helpful!!! Thank you!!
Hi there, very informative! A faster alternative to printing the Canada Post labels might be simply opening the PDF generated, open a word doc, use SnipIt which is free on your computer to cut the section you need and paste it into word. I was wondering if you have a video on how to setup shipping costs, including determine what the shipping costs would be, on your Esty store itself? Thank you!
The problem with taking a screen shot is the quality of the image will be reduced which may not be an issue with labels but I'd rather use the PDF to get a crisp clear print. I don't have a video on that but can definitely try to put one out soon! :)
Sarah Types i would definitely appreciate that! Thanks Sarah!!
Thank you!! I will definitely look into Chit Chats:) I had a question regarding Canada Post: If you purchased a shipping label online for a package to US or INTL (includes a customs section at end), do you still need to fill out a separate /additional customs form?
nope! :)
@@SarahTypes ahhh thank you!! A while back their customer service told me yes and I was confused cause it didn’t make sense😭😭
good video
i noticed Canada Post has faster delivery times for domestic parcels than Chit Chats. But yes, Chit Chats is for the low cost postage rates and not the delivery time. ChitChat's delivery time to USA is crazy fast lol. 3-5 days. Much faster if the American Zip code is on the east coast (if you live in the Toronto area)
Actually from my experience the times are the same. it's just chit chats puts a much wider window because of Covid right now (because they are honest).. where Canada Post is still using their normal postage times even though they don't guarantee them (because of covid). I use both services and can say the delivery times for canadian parcels end up being the same :)
Thank you so much for your videos! I came across this video, and I am going to check out more of yours. I am about to launch my online shop as well in Canada. Do you know where you buy boxes for a cheaper price?
I buy my stuff from wolfpack.ca
@@SarahTypes Thank you so much!
I'd love a demonstration on how you set up shipping. I'd like to offer it free for items over $35. The system is tough to navigate in Canada. Thank you Sarah!
I actually recently removed the free shipping option and took out the cost from my listing because etsy made some changes that majorly screwed me and other canadians over (tax issues) so my listings just looked wayyy too expensive.
Ahhh that label editing, printing and cutting would drive me crazy🙈 I just print the labels on regular paper and then all I have to do is cut one half off or fold it over and then put it into those plastic sleeves I got for free off the Canada post website. They are adhesive so you just stick it on your package. No stickers needed 🙈
ya, I was thinking of using those but they didn't fit my envelope great and I am trying to avoid plastic. However I've recently improved my process to make it much quicker and will be putting up a video on that soon.
Ohh makes sense. Would love to see it! I’m not sure what your products are but Do you ship them via lettermail at all? I ship mine in oversized mailers, super cheap, but they can only be 1” thick I think. And so now I am trying to find out how to label them myself at home. Because snap ship is for packages only. The problem I have I just that our post office lady always has trouble weighing them and stuff so it’s gotten to a point where i fear going there 🤣 it always takes forever. Do you know anything about letter mail? I know I can just put on a 1.94 stamp for everything up to 100g. But I don’t think there are any stamps for heavier envelopes.
Thanks for your response☺️
Hi Sarah. Because Canadian postal rates are so high do you charge the customer for shipping or do you do free shipping? Would you pay extra for shipping things that are big envelope size because of tracking or send those just regular postage? Thanks Sarah
Hey Alan, I include the shipping in my product price and then offer 'free' shipping. To add a cost, I basically figure out the average shipping cost. My canadian parcels can be $16 to ship or $9 (same size and weight but different provinces etc). So I just average that out. Sometimes I'm short and sometimes I'm over.. that's just the way I've chosen and I think it works. There is one product of mine and can fit in an oversize regular mail which will cost $3 anywhere in canada but no tracking so for this product to keep the cost low I do use this option but also provide a tracked shipping option if the customer wants it. It's also not an extremely expensive product so if it gets lost it's not the end of the world.
Thank you so much Sarah!
@@SarahTypes Can you track oversized regular mail?
Thanks for the video
My post office changes the rules every day. They even open my parcels to check what I’m sending “if it’s not paper/ sticker products”.
Can't the label be just a screen shot and then print from the cell phone? Thank you for all information is was helpful 😊
it won't be as clear
Great video thank you ! One question , how do you set up the shipping rate on your Etsy store when you don't know where your products are going ?
I use an average price.. costs in canada range from $11-$16 for me.
Is there any way of putting all of the addresses into a CVS file and uploading them then going in and just entering the information later
Hi hows your customers from etsy to see or to know the shipping cost when they add the item to their cart? if you do it manually by inputting the shipping information?
Hi Sarah thank you so much for this video. my question is I have a wix store for my clothing consignment store since wix doesn't have shipping pricing. how do you add the shipping prices to the store before you go to chit chat and print label
like when someone buys a dress and go to checkout I want to the taxes and shipping to be added to their order before they pay but doesn't have that so how do you add the cost for shipping
How i did it. Print labels at home
Using chit chat and dropped off at nearest canada post. Since label is from canada post so they will take it 😃
it literally says on their site to NOT drop it off at canada post so good luck to your parcels.
@@SarahTypes it worked even after dropping off at canada post it was updating at my chit chat as well😄
Hii Sarah ,
Would you like to recommend me how should I ship my A4 to A0 size prints?
From Canada post or another co,s??
Thanks
Dear Sarah, Thank you so much for this video! How does it work if you consider to sell downloads like a print? Do you fill in 99 items or just one?
Stupid question: do you need to have a small business account for cheaper coast? Because I’m from Quebec and it’s 26$ just to ship to Ontario…
it does give you a bit of a discount but it's not significant
Hey Sarah, thank you for the tutorial video, great content. I just have a simple question about label printing. Sometimes I only have one order, if I print the label on half of the paper, can I still use another half of the paper next time?
yep! I do, I just peel off one label and make sure to fee it in the printer properly for next time. In the video I cut them down to fit my boxes but I don't do that now as it wastes too much time so I can put the whole sheet back into my printer.
HI Sarah, which label printer you use it? thanks
GREAT Video ! Thanks. I still have a small question: at around 9:25, you open etsy with post canada side by side and you copy-paste the customer's address to prepare the shipment but once the parcel is shipped, do you go back to Etsy to specify that the parcel have been shipped ?
yes, because I don't do it directly from etsy I do have to go back in and enter the tracking number.
@@SarahTypes thanks for the answer, I really appreciate it
:) Thanks for the video! what about small business shipping only small enveloppes? they don't offer service for that kind of product, the only offer service fpr parcel!!
we can't even print labels for enveloppes/letters.
for stuff that fits with their letter mail category, I do that with stamps and ya everything else has to be a parcel unfortunately.
Love your video!
What printer do you use for the shipping labels from CanadaPost?
thanks! it's just a regular canon inkjet :)
Does it cost you money to ship from Canada post? Like do you have to only buy a stamp or pay them more money to do the tracking?
Hi for shipping internationally what should be reason of export be on Canada post
I’m so tired of the long lineups and $ spent at Canada Post! Do you guys have any tips on how I can save myself from going to the post office so I can just put stamps on it and throw it in the red box? Do I have to fill out a declaration form every time? And does it require me to go to the physical post office? Do you have any recommendations where I can get cheaper postage stamps?
🙏
If you're shipping a smaller item (less than 2cm in height and lighter than 500g) you can ship it in an envelope with the required stamps and drop it in the mailbox. You only need to fill out a declaration form if you're shipping a parcel(a larger item with tracked shipping) to the States. Yes if you're shipping internationally with a parcel. At Costco, you can get a roll of 50 permanent stamps for 70ish dollars which is cheaper than purchasing at a Postal Office.
@@girlyitsmesharon3526 awesome. Thank you so much. Do I need a declaration for international even if it’s within the measurements you mentioned for USA?
@@sindu3 Nope!
This is so helpful, thank you for sharing this video. I have one question. Should I need to use sticky paper to print labels? Or I can use the normal paper like A4 or letter to print labels. Thank you so much:)
you can definitely use regular paper and packing tape :)
Hello Thanks for sharing this video. Would you please let mw know how can I calculate shipping cost for a a small business>Or should I go in person and ask for membership or anything else dose need to do . Thanks and love this video!
they have a shipping calculator/estimator thing on their website
Hi! I just want to be sure this is clear in my heard😂 so you print the shipping labels and just prod in a mail box on the street?! Thanks you for helping me 😘
I actually drop them off at the post office, not the mailbox :)
@@SarahTypes Is there a way we can throw it into the red box without going to the post office? All three Canada post locations near my house are extremely busy and unfortunately the workers are clueless when it comes to providing information
Hi thank you for your video. I was thinking to start shipping with ChitChat because its closer to my place and cheaper than Canada in Montreal. What do you do when someone want to return the item ? what is your return address ?
that's where it's a bit complicated with chit chats. The return goes to their location when returned from within Canada. For US shipments, you have to provide a US address or it goes to their location in the US and right now you can't really just drive there to pick up because of covid. I'd recommend checking their website or giving them a call about the returns because I'm still a little foggy on that.
@@SarahTypes ok perfect thank you
Is there a way we can integrate Chit chat to when the listing is made in Etsy, when it asks for what the charge for shipment is because I am really not sure how I would set a price.
I have found for me that Chit chats shipping within Canada is usually about 30-50 cents cheaper than Canada Post.
Hi , thanks for this video , for the label printing , can one edit the Canada post to only print one page. Instead of it printing the page we don’t need ?
Yes just take a screen shot of the right side, after past it in word, choose the desired size then print 🖨 this is what I do to avoid ink wasting
Hi girl I love this video, but I am confused about how shipping works since I am more of a visual learner. I am planning on selling plushies that vary in size (some up to 30 cm long). I am a bit confused about everything I will need to get started. I have never been to a post office before fyi. If you could help me with what materials I need, where to get these materials and steps to take on shipping in Toronto/Mississauga that would be very helpful! Or even a "shipping my packages step by step" video would be great too!
I would start by just getting a few packaging items from staples to see what you like and want to use and then would start by going to the post office and have them process your items. This is what I did until I got the hang of it a little more and had enough packages that I didn't want to make everyone in line at CP wait for me :/
Thank you so much for your video! Do you use your own shipping box or do you purchase their box for $19 which includes the shipping?
no, I def use my own boxes - it's much cheaper
Thanks for the video. How would you organise getting an undelivered US package to be redirected during COVID?
sorry for the delay! I've had this happen once with chit chats and it took a really long time but the buyer gave me the wrong address so it was 100% their fault. I just had to give chit chats the new address. For canada post it would just get sent back to you. I would personally wait until you get it before sending another unless it's been an unreasonable amount of time. I had one package take 2 months at the beginning of the pandemic. The customer complained so I sent her another and then shortly after she got hers plus an extra free item which wasn't good for me.
Thank you.....
Better Option for printing label from Canada post, just cut half the the paper so that printer always print the label only not those other unnecessary information from Canada post. it works for me and save a lots of time doing Photoshop and other stuff.
is there no third party on labels that works with etsy canada
Hi Sarah thanks for the video. Do you have any tip for shipping fragile products? Thank you.
Use lots of filler and padding! Make sure it's snug in the box.
@@SarahTypes Thank you!!
Im a little confused, I thought the customers pay(cover) for all of the shipping fees, so how do we cover those costs additionally shown on Chit Chat for example?
you add them either to the price of your product or you add a shipping fee
Can I use this if I have a shopify store if from canada btw
Amazing video, can you request pick up from Canada post?
yes you can!
@@SarahTypes with no extra cost?
@@fareadfesy7631 it's $3 i think if you don't get any upgraded shipments but free if you get the better shipping options
Hi Sarah! Thanks for the video. Quick question about ChitChats; does the package have to weight more than 100g? Every time I try to import and order from my Etsy, ChitChat won't allow me to complete the order because it weights less than 100g :(
It psychically doesn't have to but you do need to put in the min weight to move forward. Mine are always 0.25 lb which is 0.5lb less than the required so I just put in the minimum number.
When you drop off your prepaid packages to canada post, do you have to stand in line still or is there somewhere you can put them without have to be helped by a post office worker? Thanks so much for your video!!
you can usually just put them on the desk, if there's a line I just ask if I can drop my boxes and they always say yes.
Wondering if there are any other shipping options for us small business owners who are shipping from Ontario to Ontario. So we don't have to rely on chit chats or Canada Post.
Check the comments, I think there are a few suggestions for other options.
Hey!! Thank you this was really helpful! I just had a quick question regarding the Canada Post Small Business account. I heard they give free stuff for your business, so do I have to be an actual legal business to be eligible for that account? Because I sell on Etsy.
Thank you!
I've never received anything free! It's a small discount on shipping, really small. You don't have to be a legal business though.
I am just wondering, when you compare chit chat with Canadapost, do you take small business discount advantage in consideration ?
yes I do! :)
Hey Sarah, I have a question, how does customs and duties work? Is there ever any extra surprise charges to you or the customer when shipping to America? my biggest fear, i hate extra customs charges! D:
I'm not sure.. it will depend on the kind of product you sell I think. I haven't had any US customers tell me about a duty. I have had a customer from Italy tell me they got a 30 euro charge though.
Do I need a small business number to ship with Canada post?? I just go by sole proprietorship
no you dont need a business number :)
Just wondering what the smallest size is that the labels can be trimmed down to? My breakable product is 3x3x1.5 and CA post is telling me min box size has to be 6x4x2 due to their sticky label size. I would like to avoid ordering such large boxes so any suggestion would be helpful. thx!
My boxes are pretty small, I use 4x4x4 and the labels just fit width wise and then I just fold the end (length wise) of the label over the fold of the box. I've never had a problem and have been using those boxes for about a year. So I'd say the width can't be trimmed smaller than 4" and the length is prob 4.5"
I'm planning on selling jewellery and I would want to use the smallest mailers available to minimize waste, but the shipping labels are so big! Will they still work if I shrink them down in Photoshop?
i don't think so, pretty sure you have to print them at the recommended size.
Sarah, thank you. Your video is so helpful! I started in October and shipping has been a headache. Do you know how to handle shipping labels if I get an order for local drop off? Etsy mentioned it as an option but I am not clear as of how to complete an order without entering a registration number from Canada Post or another service. have you ever done local drop off?
yes, I do local pickups. When the order is complete.. I mark it as done and just leave the tracking field empty. You can also select 'other' and type something in for that as well.
@@SarahTypes Thank you very much, Sarah, for your response. I am about to try it. I may come back with another question.
My head is spinning 😵💫
What do you use for a Origin Post Code when selling POD?
when I did POD I didn't use canada post as the company shipped it for me so i used their address
What is chit chat?
Doesn't look like there is chit chats in manitoba
Thanks you
Can't you just take a screenshot of the label and put it into a word document and then size???
Hi, when you set up your store and added the product, what did you select for shipping? Do you pay out of pocket for shipping? Also, does Etsy charge 5% for shipping regardless? Thanks for your help.
yep they charge a fee on shipping regardless. My most recent video is actually specifically on how I do 'free' shipping. I don't pay out of pocket.
@@SarahTypes thank you, I'll check it out 😊
hey i keep trying to create a shipping label on the canada post site but it doenst load. I try to create a buisness account and it also doesnt load. Please help.
I'm so confused why shipping is so expensive in Canada but not user friendly whatsoever 😐
I don't know :( I do find chit chats to be more user friendly than canada post though! (as far as their website and purchasing shipments)
@@SarahTypes im going to figure out canada post here eventually. I unfortunately don't have a chit chats here! Thank you for your tips 😊
Hey, if you have a canada post small business account (you can register for free), you can order FREE mailing pouches (those plastic pouches with the sticky backside) that way you can print your shipping labels on there using your regular paper, and put them inside those free plastic pouches you got on canada post > stick them onto your package.
I considered using these at one point but they were too big for my envelopes but it's definitely a great suggestion! :)
@@SarahTypes You can cut them in half! That's what I do :)
You can get FREE poly-mailers on Canada post! Just search under shipping materials, you can get 200
I noticed your chitchat was set to USD not CAD
it defaults to that in the pop up when you claim how much the product is but I usually change that.
