One interpretation of the song is that if you choose to live your life as a “martyr” (martirio also means inner torment in Spanish) rather than trying to overcome your emotional obstacles, then you are wasting your life. Emotional resilience is a common theme in many of their songs. Enjoyed your reaction! 👍😎
I don't speak Spanish, but Martirio has got to be one of my favorite songs of all time. So beautiful and raw. People always talk about the Warning sounding so full as a three-piece, and while they do play the crap out of their instruments, I also think they use their voices as a fourth instrument.
I get chills every time I listen to Martirio, and I don’t even know Spanish! The only word that comes to mind when trying to describe it is epic, and the way these ladies present it is absolutely EPIC! With every song these sisters release I become more convinced that these young ladies WILL, without a doubt in my mind, one day be recognized as not just one of, but THE GREATEST Power Trio of all time, eclipsing even the greatest power trios to date in Rush, Cream, The Police, Muse, Jimi Hendrix, Grand Funk Railroad. I know this is a bold statement, but I am absolutely 100% convinced of this! Only time will tell, but it is very apparent, at least to me, that they are well on their way to bringing that prediction to fruition. Simply put these young ladies souls seem to be timeless, and have eons of wisdom to draw upon. I believe they will absolutely dominate the music world for as long as they chose to do so. Mark my words, they WILL sell out any venue they chose to play, including major arenas and stadiums and they WILL be invited to headline the largest major music festivals the world has to offer, playing in front of millions! LONG LIVE THE VILLARREAL SISTERS! aka THE WARNING!
Dany's wonderful voice comes alive when singing her native language. I think this is my favorite song by them even through I don't understand the lyrics, only knowing generally what they are about. It's an arena rock anthem in any language. They usually end their concerts with it and do Evolve as their encore. I won't be the only one to recommend that when you have a choice between the official high production values video and the Teatro Metropolitan video, respond to the Teatro Metropolitan version. They are first and foremost a live concert band and the TM concert was expertly filmed and recorded.
Totally agree. The Teatro version of this song just rips at the heart strings so much more. I have no clue what they are singing, but the way it sounds, and the way they do it is awesome. And the way they wear their hearts on their sleeves in that Teatro performance just melts this 56 year-old rocker's heart. You can see the emotion on their face, you can hear it in the vocals, and you can feel it in the way they play.
I love the metropolitan theater version, I just wish they would have allowed the crowd to sound loider in the recording. Lima, Madrid and Bogotâ crowds blew it out of the park🇲🇽🇵🇪🇨🇴🇪🇦🇺🇸😃🙏🕯️💜🎹💥🎸🥁☀️🌏⚠️⚠️⚠️👍💯🌎🔥👏😀🥳🎉🎯☄️❤️ruclips.net/user/shortsBcjFm2N2Dhk?si=9wOXT3ZEKkd2P_ng🎉
Martirio in Spanish can mean Martyrdom, Torture, Suffering but in this song it means more like personal "Misery". It speaks volumes of the depth and variety these young ladies expand to.
This is a simply beautiful, anthemic song. It's interesting. When they are on tour and they play this to a predominantly English speaking audience you will see about half of crowd at least attempting to sing along. Their other Spanish song is Narcisista, which is a real banger. That one has a story behind it as it is a response to their domestic critics who called them cultural traitors to singing their songs in English. And so, they recorded their first Spanish song to tell them they aren't paying any attention to them, just making the music that they want to make. So, essentially telling them to F-off. Again, they play that for English speaking who are, once again, singing along. So far to the contrary of the accusations, they are actually cultural ambassadors.
Agreed on the improvement in their vocals. Not sure if they've had professional lessons or improved with experience as you suggest, or maybe both. The musical ability has improved over the years as well, but I think you're right that it's a more massive improvement with the vocals. Check out the live version of this song from the Teatro Metropolitan concert Aug 2022. Everything is more dynamic sounding live and Dany's belt at the end will make you cry. 🔥
Telling one to accept their fate as a martry is not a literal thing. They are telling those who choose to live their lives as martyrs are wasting their life. They are asking people to rise above self imposed martyrdom, it's an empowering anthem more than anything. As for the Rush comment, I know Rush has been an inspiration to some extent. Ale often wears a Rush T-Shirt performing. (Pau got to play on Neil's drum kit at the offices of Modern Drummer in just the last few weeks.) I know one of the Rush forums has a permanent thread dedicated to discussing The Warning. So there is definitely a connection. The video was filmed at a fairly remote location northwest of Monterrey and was a very unpleasant 12+ hour shoot with the heat, bugs, and wind, but the results are visually stunning. Thanks, Mike.
I've been following these girls for 10 years. I don't speak or understand Spanish but this song might be my favorite by them, and all their songs are good. You should watch the live show At Teatro Metropolitan cdmx. Their superpower is live.. these music videos are good.. but they're a different monster live... rock on brother TWA🤟🎶☮️
I have thought for some time that the Oooos and Aahhhhhs in many of their songs (particularly when they do them in harmony) can take the place of those notes/themes/parts played on a keyboard or second guitar. Early on, some critics said it was lazy writing, but I disagree and think that it is a way to thicken their sound with the skills they have. I really like it used tastefully. I can also tell you that when this song is played live, in front of a knowing audience, all singing the Oh-oh-oh-ohs towards the end, it gives me goosebumps to be in that crowd.
I agree, one of the many benefits from having 3 vocalists is being able to have some vocals act as another instrument vs a lyric. And I think it draws in the audience.
The video was shot in the Icamole desert north of Monterrey, MX. DPA said that when they returned home they were covered in dust and sand. The women in the video are the girls, their mother, a cousin and a friend. The song is about calling out someone who lives their life as a constant victim (martyr). As far as I know this is their only song with two guitar solos.
Full disclosure, I am Hispanic, my Spanish is awful, but this song moved me from the first time I heard it…and that was well before this official version. There are a couple videos of them playing an early version in Central or South America. The arrangement is different but the power and emotion behind it is obvious. Martirio was an anthem from the start. Great reaction. I think Neil Peart would have loved the drum riff Pau wrote. She is very proud of it.
Their live performances are so much better then the official video for all their songs. Don’t know why, they just are. When you have a choice, select the song from the Teatro Metropolitan show.
Not only are a lot of their lyrics open to interpretation, but also some of the translations to English of this song, as I have since learned, don't really convey the intended meaning.
As soon as you said, “It kind of sounds like…” in my mind, I thought, “Rush” - right before you did! I guess great minds think alike 🤣. Despite being in Spanish, this is right up there as one of my favourite TW tracks. The vocals at the end are EPIC when heard live, with the entire venue singing along with the “whoahoahh” part. Great reaction! If you want to hear their other great Spanish song, try “Narcisita” at the Teatro Metropolitan show from 2022.
The exquisiteness and melodic beauty of this song far exceeds the importance of the lyrics, although it's still profound and important, which is why the language takes a backseat, IMHO. The creative talent of the 3 sisters competes with the virtuosity they possess as players of their instruments and their vocal prowess. Thanks and greetings from México!! 🇲🇽 🤘😁✌️
Hey bro... You really need to invest the time to get your video translated... To do this, while uploading the video, please Click the "CC" button, (Closed Captioning) or the "Subtitles" ... It will take a bit more time to upload but believe me it is worth your effort... It WILL add NUMBERS to your views, likes, and subscribers !!! Please, for ALL of your videos I'd recomend this ! The Warning fans are dedicated, but they will watch more !
Also, The Warnings viewers are across the WORLD ! With the CC turned on it makes everything you say translated into ANY language ... Sorry, I'm just saying ...
I don't speak Spanish either but this is such a beautiful song. I also like some German songs by Saltatio Mortis and Feuerschwanz they are more folk metal bands but I like their stuff. But The Warning is my favorite band over all other at this time, I've watched them since 2017 and seen them when they were already good, get better and better as they learned from opening for all those great bands before them. After touring with Halestorm and then 3 Days Grace and Then Muse you can see how much they took in, their stage presence grew and they energy got even greater (as if that was even possible). They are still willing and open to learning from all those they meet as they journey along the road of Rock Legends.
There’s a IG live or Vlog or something out there from Dany where she described that they had a vocal coach for sure during the recording of their first album XXI Century Blood. Dany mentioned that the coach worked with her to get her to relax her jaw while singing because singing with a tight jaw can affect her tonality. I’m fairly sure Dany at a minimum works fairly regularly with a vocal coach. Dany has made a fairly substantial leap vocally between the recording of each of their albums to this point and I’m thinking Dany will continue to improve both technique wise and range wise as her voice continues to mature into adulthood. I’ve only ever really seen 1 vocal coach/reactor ever be critical of Dany’s vocals and that was because she didn’t understand why, in her opinion, Dany never flips up into her head voice. I never understood that because Dany never really needs to because she’s developed a fairly decent mixed belt but to each their own. I’ve never really seen Pau discuss much of what she does to train vocally besides her singing while exercising to increase her stamina to sing and drum concurrently. I’ve never really seen Ale discuss much of anything about vocals except the fact she doesn’t really like the pressure she feels while singing lead and prefers not to do it unless it’s required to give Dany a vocal break during a show. Hopefully they all continue to improve vocally going forwards bit IMO they are pretty darn good right now.
I believe they said it took like 18 hours to record this video as it was windy and all the dust was getting on their instriuments and in their clothes and skin. I believe Dany said when they surrounded her with the fire, she was petrified as it was very windy and she was afraid the fire would spread. Sounds fun. LOL
Mike, to your comment about their early covers and singing from experience - you might consider a triple reaction of 1) their first Enter Sandman cover from 2014 or so; 2) their cover of Enter Sandman with Alesia Cara, where they rewrote the song in a way that picks up where the original left off and ands back at the beginning. It's the first song on Metallica's Blacklist album and it's brilliant; and 3) their live version from Teatro Metropolitan where they have reworked their reimagined version into something that works for a live performance. This took them several months through the Mayday tour and beyond, but they nailed it down. I saw them 4 times as they were working through that process and the progression was clear. I think there are a lot of lessons there.
I think the ladies were being a bit on the ironic side with their advocacy of martyrdom. Rather it tells me to stop being a martyr, but maybe thats the voice of my mother which remains in my head....🤷 Truly enjoy your reactionalyses. Have you done their cover of The Pretender? Its old but kind of a milestone in their history. 🔥⚡🔥⚡🔥⚡🔥 ✌️💖🎼
the covering over the building frame was not supposed to be shredded but the winds had other ideas so DPA/TW and the team decided not to fight it... it makes for a nice atmosphere and works pretty well for this OMV... this is not the first time they've had to deal with the winds, either... one or two of their other MVs that were shot outside were also on windy days... there were also comments about how the blowing sand stung and caused them to feel like they had a sunburn... they did a great and professional job, that's for sure 😹 TWA ⚡🤘😸🤘⚡ TWA
Interestingly, this was one of my less favorite TW songs, until I saw it live in Boston last year. It completely blew me away, leapfrogging a huge logjam at #2 behind only Survive. The full passion only comes through live. The TM version is vastly better than this.
*Martirio Fun Facts:* The Warning debuted an ealy version of *Martirio* back in Nov. of 2019 during their Argentina opening tour. Yes. The Warning does play with a click / backing track. Even during their rehearsals. They filmed this video in a desert near their home city of Monterrey. Would be esier to play the playback & click track through their IEMS (In Ear Monitor System) then giant speakers out in the desert. Pau was the only member that had troubles with the torn fabric. She couldn't move like Dany & Ale. There are times where you see the fabric right in Pau's face. Other times it's not interfering with Pau. I don't understand Español but I'll still listen to Spanish music. Same with German (Kraftwerk). Or even Japanese (Nemophila). Or even Ukraine (The Sixsters). Know very little or none of each language. But love some of the bands that come out of those countries. There's a lot of good rock you're missing out on.
Musically by far is one if their best put together. It’s like a tapestry of different rhythms and chords smoothly laced together presented in an anthem format. Rather brilliantly done, I think.
As the warning says, music is the language. Here is a band that the warning likes. They drop some english but sing in their native tongue and man does it go well with rock. Alot more where they came from. Nothing like a live performance in front of a crowd of whom 80% had never heard of them. ruclips.net/video/OvtKRZ9xt3E/видео.html
In my opinion this is a great anthem for stadium play, I can see how a mass of people are woowing with them at the end, what a scene! This is beautiful and each one in the band gets to shine a little on their own. Dany´s guitar work is beautiful as is Pau´s drumming and singing. Ale lays down some pretty cool bass groves here and there. This is one of my favorite TW songs. It does not matter if it is in Spanish since the music is top notch and their singing is equally fantastic. The same goes for Narcicista.
Even though I am not a Spanish speaker, this is one of my favorite songs by The Warning, it has such a awesome vibe and I can see this becoming a full arena anthem!
Hi Mike, New subscriber here ! I follow these young ladies since several years and they never cease to amaze me. I love their sound, their lyrics, their vocals ... They already have a large catalogue with many interesting tunes. Their 3rd album ERROR is a must have (very well produced). Can't wait for your next reaction, Gilles from France 🟦⬜🟥🤟😉 (sorry for my bad english)
I agree about Rammstein, but I disagree about German music, yes, most German music is rubbish, but try listening to something by the Aerzte or their lead singer on his own; Farin Urlaub, songs such as Junge, Wie es geht, Geisterhaus, Sonne, Karten...
They spent over 12hrs in this desert location. Large insects, hot and that is real wind. (That tent was solid to start. Their mother is one of the witches. In the studio, recording Dany's vocal track. Pau said "Nooo". Dany agreed after listening to it. She had sung in Spanish with an English accent. 😮
As I understand it, writing rock songs in spanish is hard (harder than in english). TW want their songs to be meaningful and good. Martirio is the second song they wrote in spanish. and I can't wait to hear more from songs from them in spanish - although, as you I do not speak spanish (only enough to make fool of myself :o))
The in-ears in this video makes sense for the slow motion scenes, the video is slowed but the playing is still on time with the song and each other. Adds a whole level to it all to play faster without looking like your playing faster when slowed.
One interpretation of the song is that if you choose to live your life as a “martyr” (martirio also means inner torment in Spanish) rather than trying to overcome your emotional obstacles, then you are wasting your life. Emotional resilience is a common theme in many of their songs. Enjoyed your reaction! 👍😎
This is one of the peoples favourite here in the good ol US we love this one almost demand it. A rock anthem don't matter what language.

I totally agree about the voices.. the 4th member is playing a 3way harmonized voice instrument that steals the show most of the time..
Their super power is their three part harmonies. They are so good at it.
I get chills every time I listen to Martirio, and I don’t even know Spanish! Fan favorite, regardless of language! Saw them in Boston and this was their first encore. Just found your channel and love it, keep it up!
Like almost all of their songs. their live performance of this from Teatro Metropolitan was insane. 3,000+ fans singing along at the end.
Or maybe Pau’s inner ear monitor is because she’s playing at double speed. How else could she be playing in slow motion but in time?
I'm sure the Rush reference would please them. A LOT 🙂
Pau has commented before about the inspiration she has gotten from Neil Peart.
Agreed on the improvement in their vocals. Not sure if they've had professional lessons or improved with experience as you suggest, or maybe both. Yeah, they use in ears while filming. Makes the behind the scenes footage kinda funny because all you can hear is Pau's drumming.

They are recording a new album as we speak , Pau the drummer said it on Instagram
Great reaction! Crazy good song live 🎉 Locura ❤
love the song great reaction tthanks
These girls....they just won't allow you to sit still and demand you sing along even when it's not your language.....
I love this song …it’s brilliant..Though it’s in Spanish it’s amazing .Dany is an amazing singer .
The in-ears in this video makes sense for the slow motion scenes, the video is slowed but the playing is still on time with the song and each other. Adds a whole level to it all to play faster without looking like your playing faster when slowed.
The song is about self martyrdom. We all know that one person who is a always the martyr.
i dont speak spanish either but this song live.... Dany puts a bit more of her grit into it.
🙋⚡⚡⚡🔥🔥🔥
Can these ladies do not wrong? They are sick! Love them!
I used to be the same way then I fell down a japanese rock rabbit hole lol
