I was an aspiring outdoor photographer when I was in high school back in 07-08. I had won some competitions and had been accepted into a reputable (but expensive) university. I emailed Jimmy and asked him for some advice on what I should do moving forward to pursue this dream of mine. To my shock and surprise he actually responded to me. All these years later and what he wrote back to me in that email is still true today.
@@jakobtrock-jansen4741 I'm paraphrasing but he essentially said to avoid expensive universities & don't major in something like photography. Major in something practical and enjoy being young and in college while you can. On the side, continue to hone your craft and carefully develop it over a long period of time. After school if you want to be a dirt bag and live out of a van and focus on photography, go for it! You'll have a degree to fall back on if you loose your passion.
With all the troubles in the world this guy climbs rocks. And another thing, I’ll figure it out to the best of my ability first, then commit. His way sounds backwards but it’s catchy!
Agree with you 100%, all that wasted focus on his relationship with his girlfriend and not nearly enough footage of the actual climb. Very disappointing
@@elbob248 It would have been better. They shot the cameramen and their reaction more than the actual climb! And also, like MisfitsFriendClub wrote, the relationship part took over way too much of the film. The actual climb was what, 10 minutes. It was stupid.
Commit to the dream --- and you will find the way to get there. The big lesson I took from this was the idea of accepting failure as a stepping stone to success. George Leonard once graphed the route to mastery as a series of plateaus between great leaps to the next level up. The role of persistence (dedication to incremental improvements) is paramount.
Jimmy Chin
The best adventure cinematographer, and a stellar, kind, humble, compassionate, aware, solid human.
Well said.
I love how Marina hugged the rock at the top. Go girl!
For me it looked like she fell on the stone from exhaustion (probably exaggerated :D).

@@EL-mn1pf So awesome that he responded. I'm considering a similar lifestyle and needed to hear this. Thanks!
So passionate, so humble, in committing to a dream . 👍🏾 Way to go Jimmy.
Incredible interview! An unbelievably awesome man - in so many ways!!
Thank you for showcasing something truly worthwhile & inspirational.
A philosophy book by Jimmy would be incredible! “Commit and then figure it out.”
How could anyone give this a thumbs down? He is an amazing person!
Video is too short
@@vergonzoso4085 Agreed!
He has been a hero, to me, for years. Happy to see him teaching the next generation.
Meru, Free Solo and The Rescue ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ SO GOOD!!
I love jimmy Chin.....I live a life of adventure through him
The single biggest inspiration ever.
I have never climbed a mountain, but I can relate to climbing and falling.
Chinese language of 5000 years cannot find a word for what you are doing. That cracks me up :) Jimmy 上下五千年你是头一号. Such an inspiration and role model

My folks would have Correctly guessed, that I had cheated!!!
MIxed emotions of "are you nuts?' and you are amazing!
“Commit and then figure it out”
This is what I needed to hear…
A testament to the power of a strong talented woman. Jimmy would still be taking pictures and living in his car without her.
Jimmy Chin inspires me more than people climbing the hardest routes in the world
100% with you on this.
Two thumbs way up Jimmy !
I live in Thailand I know that cave well.
Woah. I had no idea Jimmy was from Mankato!
Jimmy! What an incredible guy. Just saying.
I’m inspired

He’s doing a film with people like pro snowboarder travis rice in september!! It’s gonna be awesome!
Looking very nice.
5:09 this just threw me off a little. I have watched 'the rescue' and apparently they were reported as the top cave divers in the world.
He has the giga Chad jaw.
this dude looks like he's carved out of granite
Jimmy Chin is hot!
I'd love to see how he reacts when he gets lectured by a kid at the crag for not wearing a helmet.
Commit, then figure it out.
Has some Tibetan genes ?
Their oscar acceptance speech was cringy, they didn't even acknowledge Alex Honnold.

Free Solo was a let down. I was expecting more shots of the free climb.
Too bad you weren't there to show them how it's done.

@@soupnfresh I'm sure you'll get over it. Maybe you can DM Jimmy or Alex on Insta and pour out your angst.
