    Hey Justin!
It was good to see all three of you heading out... and Roscoe riding shotgun! Catching one on your first cast is a feeling that is hard to put into words... but fishermen know what you mean! Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! Too bad that the rest of the casts were not as productive, despite Brody trying out his Birthday pole.
For your first attempt, it went well. Like everything else in Life, the more you practice it, the easier it becomes. Of course, the final test is "how does it taste?", and judging from the results... leftovers are only a theoretical possibility! Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!

My Mom use to be the expert at catching garr. She would always pressure cook them because they had a lot of bones in them, then she would make patties out of them just like salmon.

Gar is delicious anyway you want to cook it. It's best to get one between 3' and 4' long that way you get enough meat to make a good fry. Make gar balls or gar patties the same way you would make choepic balls or patties. Like cod fish cakes. Boil it not too long and flake it in with boiled potatoes with green onions and creole seasoning and fry. Delicious 😋.

@@SpiritoftheOutdoors a good bowfishin arrow works best. we've caught them jugfishing 2 or 3 foot deep using store minners. use soft twine instead of coated bank like because if they grab the line and not the hook their teeth will stick in the soft rope and still catch them. only ever got one with a limb line. pole fishing watch richard genes video on using frayed anchor rope or if using a hook and floater you have to let him run with it. and when he stops to swallow it give him another minute or two to make sure he has it swallowed then reel him in. other than that i caught a small one on a rooster tail once when the treble hook encased his jaws and my buddy caught one last week with a live bluegill on the bottom. after 2 missed hook sets i told him it was a gar and he let it run with it and swallow it then he reeled it in. on gar the dreaded braid line is your friend lol

Some people use a skilsaw. Set it a 1/4" deep an run it right up both sides of the back, remove the middle section then hull the meat out right on around the body until you make it tho the bottom of the shell underneath the belly. You can cook a courbion with red gravy just like you would with redfish or cook it anyway you would any other fish. It's really good on the BBQ grill.

@SpiritoftheOutdoors Good day Justin, I struggle with folks who catch and leave to rot, of anything, because someone deams a specific critter invasive or nuance, might could be the Lord's way of replenishing, my point is everything can be used , up here in Michigan the dnr and the biologists began catching tons of carp in one of our many lakes , but they just threw them out, wen I was a kid we would spear carp on the flooded areas of the maple river by the 100s and use them in our gardens . I've never ate a gar nor caught 1 seem plenty though on the bank dead and in the water to. Thanks for sharing your journeys 👣 👣 👣. I like smoked fish ,suckes ,crappie, gills, just about any fish.
