Not sure what you mean but if he is fretting other notes while tapping he doesn't need to mute because that is redundant, only time he would mute is if he was tapping without fretting any other notes.

I've also found trying to tap a note more than a 5th higher than a note I'm fretting on the same string, I get the secondary note. So like holding my index on 5 on your A string, and tapping my right middle finger on 14.
