Accurate magazines are the most important part of firearms training.

I had a similar experience with an Ed Brown Kobra Carry. I bought it new from the company, but it wasn't reliable, and over time became less so. I sent it back, and he returned it stating that there was nothing wrong with it, but the reliability issue persisted (in fact, the extractor eventually broke). I replaced the extractor with a different name brand extractor (after tuning it), and the gun became 100% reliable. This was over twenty years ago, and it hasn't jammed once since.

Yeah, I've had similar experiences with EB in recent years. I love the design of a KC, but if a rep is going to gaslight me about an issue, I'm done with that company. Sold mine and went with a wilson combat. That one had issues too. But when I contacted them about it, they fixed the problem in under a week and charged me nothing. Quality control matters, but how you handle your screw ups is just as, if not more important.

I have a new DW Bruin 1911 in 10mm that had the same problem. Returned it to Dan Wesson and they said they fixed it...no change. Sent it back a second time and they replaced the entire pistol with a new one! New pistol works perfectly, with slide locking back both while firing and slowly racking slide back on empty magazine, as it should. Was frustrating for a pistol of this level of quality and was surprised to get an entirely new gun back, but glad it's fixed!

I have a DW Specialist, same issue. Also 2 DW owners at my range, same issue. .. Unlike my Kimber or any other 1911 I've looked at DWs have a bridge over the rail gap the slide stop rides in. I broke out the micrometer and measured how far each of my mags (I have factory DW which are same as Sig, Kimbers, Wilsons, Chip McCormicks, ACTmags etc) push the slide stop up when empty (with slide and barrel off). I found that the bridged part of the frames rail stops the slide stop from fully raising with most of my mags. If I weren't going to trade my DW in I would dremmel that bridge until it no longer interferes.
At the range I confirmed this with the other 2 DWs, all three worked with the same mags (Wilson and Kimbers) and didn't work with the rest.
I've seen enough of your videos over the years to know you have other 1911s to compare yours too Mr Hickok so if you compare frame rails you'll see what I mean.

I have several 1911's.. none are super high end pistols.. and a couple are lowly.. springfields, colts, caspian, rock island etc.. all are fed however, with Wilson mags.. never have failures, except to hit what I aim at sometimes. Feed your pistols with consistent quality magazines.. and you shall be rewarded.
Tight 1911s can be alittle problematic at times.. they were designed as a battlefield weapon, and tight wasnt in the blueprint.

this is an interesting note. I've generally preferred a Springfield myself. I wonder what a good custom pistol has to offer that would make it worth 3 or 4 times what an off the shelf Colt or Springfield offers. Fit & Finish ? accuracy ? Ol' Hick tells us "they're all more accurate than we are" and I always figured he had that right. My latest Springfield seems beyond reproach as far as fit and finish goes..... maybe Ol Hick will bring us some enlightenment :)

Never ignore the mag release as a cause for this. A burr there or one that is a very tiny bit too long in the right place can contact the spring on the inside of some mags and cause intermittent failure to lock open. I have seen this on two different 1911 pistols. Two minutes with a fine stone fixed it.

This may be an unpopular opinion but my personal favorite slide lock is the Smith & Wesson. It is a MIM part which many people do not like, but it fixed the issued that I was having with my Springfield. I recommended it to my dad and it fixed his issue also. The MIM part is more consistent than many of the machined slide locks and it was very inexpensive.

I had a similar problem with my Auto Ordnance 1911A1. It did not fail every time but I was not comfortable using it as a carry gun. By slide lock I assume you are referring to the slide "stop". In my days as a Small Arms Repairman (MOS 45B20) for the U.S.Army it was named a "slide stop". I have owned the Auto Ordinance for more than thirty years and despite being teased by my shooting companions for buying cheap junk it has proven to be a fun range pistol. Once the slide stop was replaced the lock back failures stopped.

Wilson Combat's start at 3000.00 and up, that Guardian costs about 1400.00. I own 3 DW's and never had a problem with any of them.

You won't go wrong with either, people have the occasional problem with Wilson combat as well it's just a fact of life with any type of machine. That's why testing is important before you trust your life to it regardless if it's a high end 1911 or a cheap micro 9.

I have a Baer that wouldn't drop the slide on a loaded magazine. The previous owner installed a Wilson shock-buff which limited the rearward travel just enough so the slide stop was not forced down by the ramp in the slide.

I prefer Hollywood magazines. They are super accurate and never run out of ammo.

I had a Taurus PT1911 that would do the exact same thing. It would only hold back on one of 6 mags. It drove me crazy. I decided to try a new slide lock. I bought a Wilson combat and, low and behold, it’s never failed to lock back since.

I only own one 1911, but for a while, it's a series 80, bought it used back then, it was already "used" back then. Well over the years I fired the hell out of it, I never had an issue, not with weak handloads, neither with factory ammo, no malfunctions, and I fired it for long using only 2 mags! The original Colt mag is by now almost all in white marks from heavy use, still works flawlessly! So I am always surprised when people claim that 1911s frequently have issues, maybe I was just lucky with mine 👍

My wife just got a vigil commander and had the same issue. It would not hold back the slide no matter what magazines I put thru it, including theirs. I had to polish the rear of the slide stop where the plunger contacts. The finish was too thick and causing issues. Its working 100% now.

A precision machine ( pistol ) must deal with many variables and conditions.
Temperature extremes and burning powder and bullet jacket metal galling ( microscopic) amongst these.
Quality construction and superior materials held to exact tolerances. Finished to a brilliant luster and fitted with comfortable and controllable hand stocks. A pistol a shootist will be proud to own.
Of course ammunition must be held to comparable values as well.

I love your videos! I have several DWs and they are all fantastic. That said, my 9mm Vigil will periodically fail to lock back the slide if i use 115 gr. or less bullets. After watching this video, I am going to try swapping the slide lock from one of my other Dans and see if that takes care of it. In the meantime, I will continue to dream of shooting as well as you.
