    53 days before the eruption
KGW crew experiences earthquake on the mountain
As the warnings from geologists about the high-probability of an imminent eruption caused alarm, Washington State officials began closing the area around the mountain to recreation, tourism and logging. Not everyone supported the closures and evacuation.
This video documents the area of the closure, much of which was later destroyed by the eruption.
At 7:45 into the video, while preparing for an interview in blizzard conditions, the KGW news crew experienced one of the many earthquakes that swarmed the mountain as seismic activity increased. Reporter Boyd Levet recorded his account of the quake for a later news report.
As the weather partially cleared the crew surveyed the mountain for signs of earthquake triggered avalanches.
13:30 into the video shows hikers on some lower elevation trails, logging operations that continued and campgrounds that were still in operation. Note: this section was shot on 16mm film and captures some of the idyllic areas of the mountain that were lost to the eruption.
This is newly restored video from the KGW archives in full HD.
It is presented in it's original 4x3 registration.

That was my Grandpa, Joe Gallow, in the yellow hard hat at the beginning of this video. Thank you so much for sharing this. We lost him to cancer in 1993.

I never thought I'd get to see it like this again. Thank you.

This footage was recorded on large VHS cameras (definitely NOT "Portable" by today's standards) handheld devices that had small battery packs that lasted may be 30 minutes. They were expensive and bulky equipment. Crews probably carried 12V batteries and generators with them and used those for backup power. Filming was not as easy as it is today (now you can whip out your smartphone and capture glorious 4K video with the click of a button). We see these rare footages that managed to survive (because tapes were wiped out and recorded over, overwritten - to save archival space and money). These are rare and extremely valuable historical material. Thank you KGW for digitizing and sharing this. This footage is now going to stay forever in history as long as the data centers survive. May be it is time for KGW to go back into their archives and dig out more of these gems and share them in the digital format. Thanks for everything you do !

Wonderful film and greatly appreciated but don't think all of it is from March 1980.

These videos are not obsolete. They are of a very high historical and scientific value, documenting a historic event.

I free with the sentiments of the others-it is still interesting and relevant. But to answer the question…ad revenue?
