- Independently produced documentary video from 1988 about Mount St. Helens with rare pre-eruption film footage and a tour of the blast zone after the May 18, 1980 eruption.

I live about 3.5 hrs from St Helens. I visit about every 3 months, more if I'm able. I was 7 when she blew. And just have always had a connection with this mountain. Where I live now is where ash fell and covered our vehicles. Long before any type of warning systems. So when we saw how quickly the ash covered said cars, we left our summer cabin and headed home as quick as we could. It wasn't until the news that we found out what had happened. I've never missed an anniversary yet up there, and don't plan to. Even during the pandemic when it was closed, we drove up to the closed gates to pay our respects to the one's that were lost

Turman and Johnston both have a ridge dedicated to them.

Truman and the other 56 are commemorated on a plaque at Johnston Observatory and Truman has a park named after him and a trail on top of a ridge. I think Harry deserves a marker near the site of his cabin but, I'd imagine morons would try to deface it.
@@JuliusCaesar888 You are so smart yet, you know nothing. There were people that died that were told they were safe and weren't evacuated. There were communities and it was the weekend. Few people (maybe only 5) snook in and the rest were in the government safe zones (that were 8 and 16 miles out by the way. Hardly five feet away) and still died. Harry Truman was quote-mined (isn't the media and government good at doing that to cover their a**es?) and only sounded dumb because, that was what the USGS was saying at the time. Harry was a veteran and I'll bet he demanded the V.I.P inside scoop of intel by the authorities. He just chose to go that way because, the stress of rebuilding would no doubt kill him and he shouldn't have to go like that in his golden years so, I stand by his decision. Only David Johnston consistently spoke about the lateral blast when the USGS and the state and federal government only cared about keeping open the lumber industry over public safety. Talk what you know and not media propaganda. There were people who died in their homes along the river miles away and mocked for it by the governor, the public, the media and the president and were denied compensation for the alleged actions of a few. The USGS didn't know the magnitude and downplayed it. They even had forecasts the ash would go as far away as Vancouver, WA and Portland, OR some 50miles away. They didn't know either. They also drew the zones according to a vertical blast that put Harry in the safe zone. It's only after the blast that everyone plays like they knew what would happen all along. So, where's too close and where's far enough to be safe now? Reality isn't as clear cut and picture perfect like a movie. Not enough people care to consider this and that is where my judgment falls. I guess anyone that lives in a home deserves a Darwin Award now too, huh?...
