Most of the explosions in the VCE and Artbeats footage collections were made using gasoline mortars (for gravity and ground explosions) and bags filled with flammable gas (for the zero g bursts). Shot at 120 to 240 fps on 16mm and 35mm film cameras.

I think this was also used in various places in Age of Empires II. It looks so familiar, but I've never played any of these.
