Yep, there has been plenty of work trying to get walking androids. A lot are either static or just on wheels. Honda's bot famously looks like he's pooped himself. I love the ambition of expecting to smash out running in 3 months :P
You know I always used to criticize the robotics industry as to why programming and constructing robots was apparently so damn difficult when it really isn't supposed to be but this video really made me appreciate why producing robots are difficult
To reach the goal you need to add 1 extra Grade of Freedom at the robot, in particular the Orizontal balancing system. I belive that a translate sideways bar is enought for you to reach the object. The bar shoud mantein the center of gravity center in the middle of the feet (moving it self left or right in base of the needs) With this upgrade your robot will be can finaly walk for hours without safety rope automatic engineer word ;-)
Don't forget to add dampers between the joints. I am suggesting for the motor have counter-rotation between each movement to handle the sudden change in force. Studying human movement is the first best step. Just like what my prof said, Nature is your best bud when designing. :), hope to see major improvement

理想を言ったら一歩のデンプシーロールみたいに左右に8の字を上半身で描いてやれば直進方向の安定性が増す(人間の両腕の役割り)
