  • A judge just rejected a controversial plea deal that would've kept an confessed carjacker out of jail. The victim's family says they were surprised, and pleased. That carjacker was just 15 when he robbed Steve Markey. Reg Chapman is at the Hennepin County Courthouse with the new developments.

    This needs to happen far more often than it does. The DA can talk all the crap she wants, but the reality is that her job is to seek justice for victims and prevent criminals from doing further harm to law abiding citizens. Nobody appointed her to be a social worker or to debate the merits of rehabilitation vs punishment and deterrence -- that's not her job -- that's a job for legislators. Good on this judge for failing to buy into the BS.

    Well done by the judge to take time to do research into this criminal's behavior over the past 4 years. It's easy to pass on responsibility and not hold the COMPLETELY accountable. I also praise this judge's long history as a public servant. Listening to him, it's easy to see he could have made much more money as a private attorney, than as a public servant lawyer and judge. Thank you sir, for your commitment to the community. As well as your due diligence.

    I came from a very dysfunctional family, whereby I was constantly discriminated against, not only by white folks but black folks too. What this painful childhood and environment taught me is NOT to DO, what was done to you, DO BETTER, MAKE BETTER DECISIONS and its exactly what I have done during my adult life and I am PLEASED with myself for NOT INFLICTING the PAIN that was inflicted on me, onto others! For me, to me, by being mean and hateful to others, only made me RELIVE those painful and heartbreaking years!

  • @Brian-pz3wh
    @Brian-pz3wh 7 месяцев назад +13

    There should be NO plea deals unless very unusual circumstances. The lawyers and DA's love to do this as it's clear the docket and counts as a win with little threat of a loss on the DA's record, but it is IN FACT a dilution, if not outright elimination of actual true justice. These plea deals are almost always weak, let the perp off with little punishment and do NOT perform the role of prevention of future criminal acts. Lazy lawyers....

    I was beaten severely as a child. My Father broke my nose, my ribs, and committed many other atrocities that would have landed him in jail. I moved out of the house when I was 16. I worked 3 jobs, most of the time only getting 3-4 hours of sleep a day. I now have two engineering degrees, teach martial arts (for people to defend themselves), have wonderful daughter that I have never touched and is working her way through college. I have absolutely no sympathy for these little crooks and most violent crimes are now being committed by kids under 18 as they fear no retribution. Thank you to this judge and shame on these LAZY prosecutors simply trying to make a name for themselves instead of doing their jobs.

    What happened to the part about "if you were a part of a murder no matter the role then you are guilty of murder also." Is it his age? I totally agree with this great judge and on a charge of murdering someone for fun he must be really rehabilitated and eh still shows little to no signs of that, no matter what his crooked lawyers say. This judge too a lot of time investigating all the data and papers on him and they were far from encouraging.

    The county attorney's office sounds more like the defense for the criminal. I watched the judge's decision to not accept the plea deal. The criminal has caused lots of trouble in the "treatment" centers he has been in and only recently started acting right. The fact that the criminal could not keep out of trouble in a supervised facility shows he would really make bad/criminal decisions if given probation.

    I’m glad that this judge is a man of integrity. The DA is way out of line here It seems she is trying to put a “happy face” on this monster. I wonder if she would be willing to sponsor him and let him stay in her spare bedroom to give him a “leg up”. Something tells me she wouldn’t. The trouble is that she would not be held accountable in any manner for any future crimes this createn would commit
