    Its nice to hear someone provide context and real analysis for the firing instead of just blaming LeBron. EVERYONE was screaming all season about Ham's lineups, lack of adjustments, and horrible game management but now its like they forgot. Ham isn't the main reason this team failed but let's not act like he was without major fault.
    Now its time to look at the front office because this will be the 8th new coach since Phil left in 2011.

    • @onyekaabasiri5100
      @onyekaabasiri5100 Месяц назад +2

      Anyone who’s just blaming lebron didn’t watch any of LA basketball this season. Ham is terrible and people been complaining about him since last season but we gave him a pass because he’s new. He had the offseason to improve and he didn’t. He just kept doing the same bad things over and over or went away from what has worked among other things

    • @justified004
      @justified004 Месяц назад +1

      @onyekaabasiri5100 exactly. I would even say he did a worse job this year. He somehow added, blowing big leads to his list of shortcomings. I didn't hear a single person defending the job Ham did this year until when everyone knew he was on the chopping block. Ham regularly went home with timeouts and challenges, so to see him do it in Game 2 was no surprise. There isn't 1 time this year that stands out as when he was the better coach, but blaming LeBron is easier than paying attention to games. I guess LeBron is responsible for the last 6 Lakers coaches.

    • @Marian-ng3do
      @Marian-ng3do Месяц назад +1

      @@onyekaabasiri5100 I've watched plenty of games AND Lebron is to blame too - he was playing more minutes than he should of, coasting on defense and lacking energy, especially in the 4th. I'm pretty sure he gone over the initial plan, to limit him to 30 mins a game. He straightened out the 2nd part of the season and was a beast defensively especially in the playoffs, but it was too late by then. I think Ham made a mistake not playing Russell/Hakimura as much BUT he did that because they weren't an ideal fit with Lebron AND also between each other - Ham needed more 3 and d guys around Lebron and went with Prince/Reddish more (Russell/Hakimure are more ball dominant and historically bad on defense).

    • @rexsmith9074
      @rexsmith9074 Месяц назад

      How many coaches has Lebron had since he's been in the NBA? 9? Lebron wanted Eric Spoelstra fired. If you want to feel this situation is different and Lebron is somehow blame free, cool. But at some point, you have to admit, Lebron has a problem with head coaches. It's hard when your best player never wants to give HCs time to develop. Even great ones. And no coach was getting the Lakers to beat the Nuggets. So context there as well.

    • @justified004
      @justified004 Месяц назад

      @rexsmith9074 I'm not saying LeBron is blameless, but too many people make a big deal out of his coaching history. None of them have done anything of note since being fired. What "great" coach has he had that he got fired? I'm sorry, but guys like Luke Walton aren't going to the HOF. No one had a problem with Kobe getting Mike Brown fired from LA, but when LeBron leaves Cleveland and he gets fired after 5 years, then it's a big deal. David Blatt hasn't coached a game in the NBA since getting fired, so how great was he? Lue was clearly a better coach. Everyone acts like he never gave these coaches a chance or they didn't have glaring issues like Blatt and Ham.
      Also, so what he tried to get Spo replaced. It was more about wanting Riley to takeover coaching a superteam in the first year when they were 500 through 20+ games. If you can't see why someone would want PAT RILEY to takeover for an inexperienced guy with all the expectations they had, then I don't know what to tell you. Wanting someone replaced is different than actually firing them.

    Game 2 was an example. Once Denver made their late run, all our buckets were forced and due to great individual offence instead of flowing out of a system. In Game 4, we finally made the adjustment we should have made in the 4th Q of Game 2.

    The main point I would argue about ham is that his head, scratching lineups, puzzling, endgame decisions, and complete inability to grasp game management affected how many games the Lakers won. So yeah, I agreed that the Lakers likely weren’t going to beat Denver unless they added some more size and defense at the trade deadline. However, it is Hams fault that we were the seventh seat. His terrible coaching decisions likely cost us five or six games, which meant we were the seventh seed instead of the fourth seed or fifth seed.

    Great analysis on Ham. That part about him trying to get guys to fit his ideology instead of building his ideology around what his guys can do well is spot on. Cam was starting because Austin and DLo were just traffic cones on defense during that part of the season and Gabe was hurt. Cam was actually playing his role well before he injured his ankle on that Hardin kickout shot. He was doing a much better job defensively on elite scorers than Austin, DLo or Max at the time. Vando wasn't playing much when he first came back because he wasn't fully healthy. We saw a glimpse of what this team could be in that in-season championship game, but the injuries were to important players on a delicate roster. Hopefully we can get Lue, build a solid roster and get back at it.

    Excellent analysis - and very fair, all around. From a long-time Lakers fan (nearly 50 years), very impressed. What makes it tough is that Darvin is such an excellent human, and sometimes it harder to hold a person like that accountable. I also think a certain level of blame should be directed at Pelinka, who appears to seldom be mentioned. The decision to break apart the 2020 champs might have been a poor one. Not having another big body on the floor to at least bother Jokic didn't help. And so on. But not holding these guys accountable, and perhaps by extension, not having the swagger to do so, was a critical failure of this team. I would like to see the core of this team return, maybe sans a few of the guys, and see if they can add a little to their balance. Personally, I'm a fan of Russell and Rui, and would like to see them return. And I'll miss Phil Handy.

    I love your show Jason and I’m not saying you’re wrong but I have some issues. For years, a problem with the league is the politics that dictate which players play. I personally know some 2nd round picks that have outplayed guys on their teams who had guaranteed money, and the guaranteed contract got the roster spot even though he was not a better player. I applaud Darvin for playing guys who don’t have a ton of guaranteed money. Do we know how the guys practiced? Was Darvin trying to instill to Rui that he needed to practice hard? Did Prince and Reddish practice harder and got to play because of it? Maybe Rui got the message and started being better in practice and in film and then got more playing time. I’m just saying it’s more that goes into this than just who we think is the best player. Again, not saying you’re wrong. Ham was flawed. But an NBA organization can have a lot of things going on that dictate play.

They certainly were in game 5 but had no timeouts with 3.6 seconds left. They also missed so many FTs. The issue was also how Ham managed the games and most of what the video talked about during the season. Good analysis. Especially with the new offense, Darvin's refusal to rely on continuity with Rui, Austin, and DLo and a big 6th man to play with AD or LeBron in bench minutes while they figured out consistent offense put them in the play in. His absolute refusal to develop Max Christie by playing him in a consistent way was also a cardinal sin IMO. But, the public conflict with AD was the catalyst for his firing. Max's 43 second exit interview was the final straw. Darvin had to go.

I'm not pro-Ham here but I'm trying to understand how Lakers make it to the wcf last year and subsequently get swept, then get the gentleman's sweep this season. I watched the games in real time this year and it felt the games were close, I never watched them live last season but did they have a similar feel as to how close these matches feel, yet denver just pulls through, cause like you said, they can't stop them in the clutch. How did Ham survive last season and have the chance this season if this was the feeling last year as well? Is it on Rob P for thinking that Ham was the best option this season cause Nurse was on the market, why not wipe the slate and go for broke with nurse, you know he makes those adjustments, do you agree or what happened last season cause I don't recall?

    "D-Lo got punched in the face on a layup" made me laugh out loud because it's a tad dramatic given that MPJ's forearm on the follow throw when attempting to swat the ball with half effort came down on D-lo's face, relatively soft, but yes as I watched that when it happened I figured that the contact was enough even though the contact came after the shot to where they wouldn't overturn it, but to my surprise they overturned it. It's the type of foul that I wouldn't mind not being called in the first place, but having it called, it didn't seem like there was enough there to overturn it. Kind of like when someone releases a 3-pointer with the shot not being effected but the follow through hitting the shooters hand. Is often times called a foul, but if it is called then challenged, for it to be overturned would be odd, just like this example was. But the punched in the face part cracked me up. I can be dramatic at times as well, especially as in this case it doesn't change the principle. The Nuggets coach willing to challenge shots where Darvin refused to at times when he should have.

You can't just stand on the sidelines, hands in pockets, watching the house burn down. Refusing to hold anybody accountable. The most I see from Darvin is he might at times have a mild conversation with the refs. He stands by and watches his players screw up. You can't coach like that.

    Ham was the wrong pick from the get go by the Lakers front office for the delusional expectations and timeline of this current roster...The AD Lebron window to win a Ring was 4 yrs ago when they won the ring in the Bubble...since then, Lebron is clearly declining in terms of defensive effort and overall stamina at the end of certain games and AD, still an all star but is clearly not a MVP type of player anymore...No one is lining up like in 2020 to take a discount and come play for the Lakers...
    Good luck convincing a coach with common sense that he can contend with those 2 while the top teams in the west are younger, more cohesive and have real draft capital to make improvement from within or via trade...Slim pickings ahead with the whole coaching staff fired.

    I don't think most coaches would have done any better? The Lakers are not as good as Denver. They are a mid-level team in terms of talent and had some role player injuries, but with Ham they made a run and got the 7th seed this year (conference finals last year!). Kings and Warriors are about the same on talent-level this season, and they missed the playoffs. Kerr is a better coach than Ham, but missed the playoffs. What coach would have coached this Lakers team into a Game 7 versus Denver, OKC or Minnesota in round one? No one. You can't make a perfect omelet with imperfect ingredients. Ham is the fall guy here, fair enough, but that's how I see it.

    • @Jayholmes518

      So you're basically saying that most coaches wouldn't call a timeout before there team went empty on 10 consecutive possessions in game 2. Didn't call a timeout up 22 till up 10 also in game 2. Didn't call a timeout up 9 till down 3 in game 5. Played 3 guard lineups vs a big Denver while getting destroyed on the glass every game without any adjustments. You have players on the bench over 6 6 just riding the bench. Every other coach would be up yelling at there players calling a timeout instead of hands in pockets. Every other coach would call a timeout and tell the players to stop with the iso freelance possessions and stick with the offense that got you the lead. Did you even listen to the 30 min video...

      @@Jayholmes518 I'm saying overall, I don't think any coach in the league would have gotten the Lakers to Game 7 vs Denver. Maybe Game 6 with a better coach. . . But Ham was coach last year in the WCF. Is that discounted now because they got bounced by the reigning champs again? Is the fact that they were very competitive in every game discounted? Ham was coach when they made a run down the stretch to secure the 7 spot... It's not a great team. Lebron is old, doesn't play defense and most games he's tired in the 4th. Is Ham an amazing coach, no, but he's not terrible, he's mid-level, and who are they going to get instead right now, JJ Reddick? LOL. Some assistant from somewhere who's never led a team? If the front office makes better decisions and they don't have some tough injuries (Vincent and Vanderbilt), no one is calling for Ham's head. He was coach when this Lakers squad reached top 4 in the league and took the champs down to the wire in every game. But Lebron is Lebron and he's getting older, so they need a scapegoat to say "look we are trying our best to win a championship right now". lol

      Yeah I hear ya. True Bron had a decent series but just didn't come through in clutch situations. Even though coach didn't call timeouts during runs it was also on players to play organized, cause they started to play too much iso. They seem to play less smart when they have big leads. There's blame all around with teams shortcomings. The management is more to blame. Hope they can be better next season. I don't want JJ. They need an experienced coach. Peace out
