I'm a history student so I know about the ins-and-outs of all the eras. I have to write a paper on intellectual history, but watching this I feel like I'm cheating. 😹 thank you for this concise information! Now I can organise my base historical and philosophical knowledge way more fruitful
I'm enjoying your series of lectures. I wonder though if the shift from myth to reason as a shift from 'who' to 'why' is also a shift to a way we use our brain, or more specifically, which hemisphere of our brain. In doing so, and over the millennials since we have refined reasonable thinking perhpas at the expense of a sense of the etheral; of thinking in time rather thinking in a timeless sense?

The notion that hunter gatherers spent their days searching for food is not accepted by paleo-anthropologists. They had plenty of time, more time than people today, to sit around and shoot the shit, as the saying goes. It is very likely that the stories of the Sumerians, etc were rooted in much older versions.
Seems like you intentionally ignored the history of the Israelis whose religious teaching influenced the Hellenistic thoughts that led to the concept of logos.

These videos are meant only to be the most cursory introduction to some of the main topics in Western Philosophy, and are therefore VERY basic. As such, it is impossible to include everything of significance in the development of Western thought (though one might wish to). From your comment, I'm assuming you're referring to Philo of Alexandria who did indeed adapt and synthesize the concept of 'logos' into Hellenistic Jewish thought. But I'd contest the claim that Philo's work "led to the concept of logos", since it predates Philo. He's adopting/adapting the pre-existing Stoic concept in the 1st Century BCE, but Stoicism was founded more than 200 years earlier. And, the Stoic concept of 'logos' is predicated on the work of even earlier Greek philosophers which is what I was pointing toward in this video. So, the influence, I think, flows the other direction. Again, thanks for watching and commenting!
