I did 200 on hardtail mtb and enjoyed pretty much all of it. Before the first feedstop was peak of mud and rain and the second feedstop was the coldest, after that it was nice. We even raced with a couple of folks in last 10km, was a lot of fun.

As for the guy with all the punctures - I think he was doomed from the start - on the Friday night he had his bike leant up against the registration marquee - wind must have caught it - caught it on camera falling to the ground. I picked it up of course.

If the weather had stayed miserable I was for bailing at 130 but as it cleared I opted for the 200, last 40 miles were a slog but glad I got it ticked off. Felt the food stations were a bit disorganised this year compared to the 130 I did last year. Good Video. 👌

I just returned from a week in Florida. 60F at 9:00 AM; 80F at 2:00 PM. Blue skies unlike Dirty Reiver. No wind. Abundant wild flowers on the side of many quiet country roads. So pleasant. From your previous video - the gravel in the New Forest looks the same as the Great Alleghany Passage (Pittsburgh, PA, to Cumberland, MD) and the C&O Canal Towpath (Cumberland to Washington, D.C.) A total of about 350 miles. We must ride it together. It would be the highlight of my cycling life. Unfortunately, I will be riding the Finger Lakes in NY on June 3 and not at Unbound. But if you have the chance to visit the east coast, please get in touch.
I was looking out for you but missed you and Richard from Bikepacking adventures. I was determined to stick to the plan, had no mechanicals, so pushed on with the 200 and finished in the sun. It was really worth it in the end but I totally see where you were coming from as I was miserable in the morning too.
Behind every chemical bottle, is a supply chain all the way back to the mine or oil well, and adverse impacts. Minimize and simplify, nature needs every break it can get. I’m committed to cutting back and riding farther with less. When I graduated chemistry 30 yrs ago, it was said there were 60,000 chemicals in every day use, now “they” say 600,000!!!

Keilder is Keilder . There isn’t anywhere to train for keilder other than keilder. The weather in the north Pennines ( North Yorkshire, Cumbria, County Durham Northumberland ) can change on a sixpence. You have to pack for anything. Dirty Reiver is great for all abilities though not just the elite there is something for anyone.
Honestly, I think I’d prefer to do it in those conditions that hot and sunny. A gravel grind like that, to me, is supposed to be about sliding around in the mud and getting dirty! Will definitely sign up to do this next year. 👌🏻
Weather was quite nice after 4 o'clock. Birds singing and stuff. But yeah you ride for you and the enjoyment of it AND you do loads a miles week in week out anyway. Hope to see you back next year! That weather looked grim. Kudos for completing it. As it happens quite a few of my cycling club participated this year. I however didn't, having just got back from Mallorca. Think I'd rather have the sunshine and Sa Calobra / Cap de Formentor over this event 😂
Back to reality, Gran Canaria is a distant memory now😂After awful weather why not head to Scotland for more awful weather🤣Being retired I can pick my days, had a lovely 100k last Friday on lovely Scottish back roads and got home dry and clean😉Great job doing 130k in those conditions👍
Was so good to meet you briefly and fist-bump. I couldn't believe those guys on the fixies, they came rattling past me on a climb. I came in at about 7:30pm, it was a loooooong day 🤣.
Haha….I’m afraid to say it got even harder but the weather much better which made it almost tolerable! The final 3 big climbs were brutal and the last 15km seemed to go on forever back to the castle! But pleased to have got it done! Nice video :)

Thanks for sharing your experience. I was supposed to be there but I sacked it off due to how grim it was. Watching this vid I do not regret my decision. Luckily Kielder isn’t very far away from me and I can use the GPX file at a later more pleasant date 🙂
Only cycled a Keilder once but loved it. Prefer the roads as they're really quiet. Not many steps to get into Scotland. Also do you have a mobile washer for your bike? Cool video as usual.

Been on the lookout for more substantial tube and saddle bags recently as I've ruined the zips on my current ones due to MUD over winter! and, lo, you randomly introduce me to Apidura! 🎉 Just need to find a gadget that keeps mud off the spout of my water bottle now... I hate that 😅
Well (I am NOT an Apidura ambassador) but they have a new hydration backpack thing I think I will try. My bottles were TOO muddy to drink from so had to keep stopping. :(

Hope you’re doing the Dukes weekender in Aberfoyle next Katie! 🤞🏾🏴☺️ Dirty Reiver 2023 was a total shambles. Very amateur organisation by Focal events & Panaracer. Chaos at the start and feed stations. That is not how you organise “Europe’s premier gravel event”.
im in total agreement, ive done glorious gravel sportives this year and they are way more professional. just seems the organisers skimped out on the basics, not enough equipment like water, boilers or kettles for people to get brews, lots of plastic containers instead of sustainable cardboard, nowhere near enough portaloos or toilets at feed stops, (i felt sorry for the female riders.) not enough bins at feed stops so rubbish was everywhere on the ground, (i just hope they did a thorough route cleanup post ride or that forest will be less beautiful this summer.) an event of this size needs a festival level of logistics and they just didnt have it.
Can you recommend any water proof cycling leggings that aren’t bulky or uncomfortable? I live in Portland so rain is a limiting factor for me as I hate getting soaked on a ride and then of course it’s cold. 🙄
May not be available now but rain legs were a thing. Otherwise some kind of dwr coated leg warmers or tights. Rapha shadow, Pearl Izumi, santini no rain. No waterproof but resistant
I think every RUclips athlete that did this ride decided to do the shorter route lol I get it though, just last week I did the P2A gravel race in the rain and mud.
Part of the entry goes to the Forestry Commission that looks after the forest. And the rest.. well if you saw how much went into organising and putting an event of this scale then you get why they charge. I mean by all means go up and do the route any time of year :)

I was going to come and spectate from one of my access points to kielder in the south. Decided to head a bit more north and had a dry day.....

Can you recommend any water proof cycling leggings that aren’t bulky or uncomfortable? I live in Portland so rain is a limiting factor for me as I hate getting soaked on a ride and then of course it’s cold. 🙄
May not be available now but rain legs were a thing. Otherwise some kind of dwr coated leg warmers or tights. Rapha shadow, Pearl Izumi, santini no rain. No waterproof but resistant

I think every RUclips athlete that did this ride decided to do the shorter route lol I get it though, just last week I did the P2A gravel race in the rain and mud.

Do you all have to pay an entry fee to do this? How much do the organisers charge you each, Katie?
Part of the entry goes to the Forestry Commission that looks after the forest. And the rest.. well if you saw how much went into organising and putting an event of this scale then you get why they charge. I mean by all means go up and do the route any time of year :)

Entry for the 200km is £75 (plus card fee)
Entry for the 130km distances is £75 (plus card fee)
Entry for the 65km distance is £60 (plus card fee)
Get use to wet if your doing unbound lol
