That scene itself was a throwback to Smallville.

I also found it funny when Lucifer tossed the tissue box at Pierce's chest and it bounced off. Kind of like a metaphor of Superman being invincible and bullets bouncing off him. Again has irony to it as Tom was Clark Kent (Superman) on Smallville.
That was the first scene I saw from this show, and I immediately wanted to watch a Smallville episode when it ended.
