    I think the sloping verticals look good. I reckon the reason it doesn't look quite right overall is because the rectangle frame isn't also on a matching angle to the rails either side. Any chance of showing us how you did the other bigger gates as we've got to buy or make one soon. If you could list out the materials involved including the metals involved that would be great. Love the channel keep it up!

    The only thing I don't like is the bottom of the gate being oddly cut, I would have cut them to all be ~3in off the ground, and then sloped with rest of fence. But I really like the top of the fence

      I did leave long to start with but with the woodchip paths I knew it would constantly catch so ended up cutting off in haste! I agree, would look better longer. 👍

      That was my thought too, the straight edge at the base of the gate accentuates the slope at the top. I would have each picket the same length, just shorter than the fence itself to prevent dragging.

    Keeping the line of the fencing has really worked well, I'd keep it as is. Nice job.

    Another great video... it matches at the top which is where the eye sees first and once the mini restoration crew have painted it green, it will blend in nice! Take care. Marc.

    I would have made the frame angled the same as the pickets so all the lines from the fence followed through. What was the point of keeping the frame square?

    • @TheRestorationCouple
      @TheRestorationCouple  5 лет назад +5

      Starting making it as a ‘conventional’ square gate before even thinking how it would match the rails. 🙄 an angled sub frame may well have worked better. 👍

      Yeah, I would have followed the lines of the fence too. And cut the bottoms of each picket to follow the same line - but a bit higher for ground clearance.

    Just the bottom, I think I would have left it abit longer and maybe adjusted the ground level behind it. But compared to my garden which I am ripping apart at the moment, yours looks fantastic. And seeing your vegetable plot, now my wife wants one too.

    Does the gate look a bit weird @ 9:21 ??
    Great idea with your method. The trick is to make it stronger and in better timber for the same cost as you can get an off the shelf jobby.
    If one costs £30 then get the timber, make the frame yourself and guarantee it will outlook the mass produced ones!
    Great vid, thumbs up.

    Another suggestion: How about attaching the rail to the style (rather than the style to the rail as you have done), the hinge would act as an additional brace to the joint when fitted

    I would have done it the exact same way :) Once it's painted it will look perfect

    Marry up the frames to the ones on the fence. but also the gap on the bottom right looks odd,, may be better to cut those pickets so they match the bottom of the fence panels ... xx

    I would align horizontal members of the gate with the existing fence.

  • @knewledge8626
    @knewledge8626 2 года назад

    Well, since you asked I would have built it with the slope but since I wouldn't have been paying attention it would be sloping the wrong way.

  • @nickc9752
    @nickc9752 5 лет назад

    Looks good, I would have matched the slope on the bottom of the pickets as well as the top, which is arguably more important than the aesthetics of the top, as the gap is larger at the bottom on one side - ?chicken sized

    I think the gate will look fine once same colour as rest of fence.

  • @adelemcilwraith5327

    The top of the fence looks great as it follows the slop. However as the slop isn't continued at the bottom of the gate it's not as seamless

    Handy, bottom makes my brain hurt though 😂

  • @paulmcfadyen689
    @paulmcfadyen689 5 лет назад

    As you say...gates don't come much lighter than this, so may not be a problem, but a diagonal brace should always be 45 or steeper in order to effectively do it's job. Otherwise, looks good👍

  • @mintylarge8944
    @mintylarge8944 5 лет назад

    I would have had the frame square and sloped the pickets as you have done but that's my OCD kicking in lol but still looks ok

  • @aurick861
    @aurick861 5 лет назад +4

    The only thing i don't like is those horizontal rails not continuing from one fence through the gate to the other fence.

    • @TheRestorationCouple
      @TheRestorationCouple  5 лет назад +3

      Me neither. Perhaps the frame could have been all on a bespoke angle too to match. That said, this week’s project is a carved sign to hang on it so that should cover the wonky rails a little!

    • @aurick861
      @aurick861 5 лет назад +1

      @Kevin Saunby cut and weld the strap hinges; or just use smaller hinges.

    • @aurick861
      @aurick861 5 лет назад

      @Kevin Saunby Agreed, but it's only 2 inch small weld... if done outside with proper grinding/cleaning of the galvanization/zinc coating...basic protection. hold breath for 30 seconds :)... it will be fine. Or as AVE says ~"filter it through a cigarette".

    Good solid gate, but I think you made hard work of it, its abit over engineered for a small picket gate, I dont think you needed to uprights on the frames with pocket holes just 2 cross pieces and a bracing piece would have been enough. And I think a straight bottom and domed top would have looked better like you suggested at the end

  • @andyanderson3898

    I would of done exactly the same!

  • @degsyathome
    @degsyathome 5 лет назад

    I'd have lined the rails through with the fence even if the frame was parallelogram shaped and don't put the brace any more than 45°

  • @davie2606
    @davie2606 4 года назад

    The angle brace is on the wrong direction

  • @vijaykava1731
    @vijaykava1731 5 лет назад

    I don't like the bottom gap it looks like the gate is bent the top Is great

  • @paulmcgeoch2603
    @paulmcgeoch2603 5 лет назад +1

    Diagonal braces more than 45degrees really are a waste of time. Too steep to be of any serious use 😁👍🏼

    • @KenPem
      @KenPem 5 лет назад

      Why? I get that 45° would be theoretically perfect, but it's not a particularly low angle and the incompressible triangle will still work well.
