Saw rust on RHS of boot at 23:49. Until you get an MOT pass, DO NOT look behind the plastic panel or remove the rear wheel to look at the weld seam where the boot floor joins the wing as you will find the sealant has hardened to cause water ingress and caused rust that needs welding. Also, don't look at the front floor from underneath immediately below your heel position where the floor meets the chassis - same problem. Don't ask how I know!
@@justsomeone89 Own a 2005 car and regularly maintain and clean it. But the sealant they used becomes brittle and separates from the metal, allowing water and dirt to stay enclosed and rust away. I have a 1.3 S with the full body kit, sports exhaust and eibachs. Over the last weekend I did 2000km and my first nürb lap - it performed way better than I ever imagined! Rich, while I'm sorry you've got to deal with this ones smoking habit, it did give me a chuckle when you mentioned it was the same engine as the C1 etc. On the way home tonight, I was following a C1 through Christchurch in my 206 (1.6 16v). This C1 was burning lots of oil. I overtook it going onto the bypass, and was fully giving it the beans up to the speed limit (70 and not a bit more...). C1 promptly overtook me braking for the next roundabout, and heading up hill on the A35, I was struggling to keep up with it! They may be prone to smoking, but bloody 'eck they seem to take a beating well - he/she must've been ragging it in a way that'd kill most engines!

Quite like a Sirion/Myvi. Statistically they have the highest MOT pass rate. What are the plugs like? Smoke doesn't look very blue. New air filter and a good general service (including front brake pads) should bring it back - just needs some love. Previous MOT's don't show emissions problem but do mention an oil leak - don't confuse the consumption with burning
They're nasty little rustbuckets. I've worked on enough of them. The last Sirion I did was a high exercise in finding good steel to weld to. I had to fabricate plates to extend the new floor pans.
Great little cars, Sirions. No issue on them would cause me to blink, they're a doddle to repair - even the rust. Check the pcv if it's burning oil, bang in a new one before doing anything else. If that doesn't cure the oil burning, drain the oil, chuck a gallon of kerosene into it instead of oil, let it idle for a bit. That'll free up stuck rings. Then do a full oil/filter change. & change the spark plugs - nobody does, so do it.

These definitely 100% drink tons of oil. My 107 is thirsty but it also still gets good emissions and decent MPG. What made a big difference though was using Seafoam. The oomph came back once I used that, might be worth a shout!
Time to have a look at the plugs I think. That exhaust smoke didn't seem just blue, but white as well. Which I guess means possibly head or head gasket problems.
I had one of these and it was never a problem, good on mpg easy to get in and out of even with elderly parents, roomy, comfortable. cheap for services. When they stopped selling that make over here then i had to get another car (but found it difficult to match the above points).
Thanks for the video. I am looking for a small family car. You have convinced me that this is what I need. Before leaving the UK I had a Daihatsau Charade, exactly like the one HubNut has, even down to the colour. I always used fully synthetic oil with this car because I know this is a complex engine and needs to be looked after. With the Charade I regularly got 65mpg, my ex, who was much more heavy footed than me, got 57. I believe sirion had hydraulic power steering, where the Charade had electric and I think this is the reason the Sirion is slightly heavier on fuel than the Charade. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Start at the beginning, check the air filter, oil change with filter, check engine breather, and then see if it still smokes. Then, it's a compression test. These engines seem to be prone to oil burning, perhaps owners subject them to short runs and prolonged oil changes. Best of luck.
It might be worn valve guides or even valve stem seals, but you got to start somewhere. A compression test won't hurt, it's highly unlikely that only the oil control rings, alone will be worn.
I drove one of these that was a loan car for an ex-Daihatsu dealer, had over 200k on it and didn't smoke at all, went bloody well for a 1.0, so I would be guessing it's something small. Good luck!
I had a similar issue with my daughters polo. That drank oil, which screws the emissions and makes them run very lean. People suggested chemtool b12 and fill up the bores, then leave it a few days to soften the carbon that’s sticking the rings. I have also heard of atf mixed with petrol, diesel (boiling, not too safe but a very old trick) and white spirits. All need an oil change before running the engine and another a few days later. The first run is a hold at decent revs for 10mins to get things nice and hot. There’s a RUclipsr called oil geek and he said something about an oil that cleans this type of issue, but you’ll need to look.
These engines turbo well would love to see this on the dyno back when i was in full swing as a tech i could do oil and filter spark plugs air filter and cabin filter in just over 20 mins there ace was on an aygo mind
Actually a good idea, because the other mechanic would be detached from the process. I'm no mechanic, but I've bought a LOT of old bangers in my life, and I mostly get it wrong because I'm too emotionally involved in the process of buying (wanting to get it over with) that I don't make rational decisions. And Kitch seems to hate car buying even more than me.
2010 Mazda2 owner here. I'm right with you on people moaning about "scratchy plastic" interior parts in cheap cars: if that offends you, well stop bl00dy touching it then. On small Japanese cars of this era with all-round electric windows, only the driver's window switch is (only just) illuminated. A bit of blue smoke from this isn't the end of the world because, as you mention, it's basically the same engine as umpteen C1/ 107/ Aygo running around.
I remember the oil control rings being replaced on my Dad's Vauxhall Victor! I think that was what was failing on my Datsun Sunny; on that, if you accelerated after coasting you'd get the smoke.
@@UPnDOWN I just love the way a 3 cylinder engine sounds, a bit V6-ish. There's an old shape Corsa round here with a 3 cylinder engine and a loud exhaust. Now loud exhausts usually bug me but that thing sounds absolutely badass and isn't hugely loud. Also, I reckon the reduction in back pressure has endowed the car with at least 3 quarters of a bhp more!
My wife had one for a while - well actually hers was the Subaru Justy but it's the same car, later repurposed as the Perodua Myvi. I believe it's the same engine (the 1.0l that is) as the Toyota Aygo. Not sure about the 1.3. It was fine as a city car - actually looked quite contemporary when parked next to a VW Up! for example. Bit slow, noisy and tinny - but then it was a budget car. Hers always sounded like a bag of spanners as well but just kept going
Always liked the look of these when they first came out. Another member of your fleet for video content atleast. Good luck with the diagnosis and eventual cure... You may have to watch some Hello Happy videos for some tips 😉🤣
Everyone raves about the Diahatsu 3 cylinder engines as used in this, The Aygo, 107 and C1 but once they get to like 90K miles they do start to use oil, Main cause is most probably long oil change intervals and they spend their entire life being thrashed to death! I should know, My daughter had a 2007 Aygo as her first car, She sold it on at 140K miles but it was using a fair bit of oil.
£1000 is next to nothing for a car these days. I’m not the least bit surprised it’s broken for that sort of money. I know things are going to be tight as you said. However if that were me I would spend a little bit extra & get the best version possible one that has all the fruits if there is such a thing. I’m a mechanic myself in Australia before anyone starts making noises. Things are different in the UK I get that just my personal view is if I am buying a car I don’t want to buy a bag of bolts where I have to work on my own car. I want to buy one that has had everything done to it which is asking an awful lot. Also the file price in the uk must be off the planet. I personally wouldn’t be bothered with the 1 litre version Id always get the biggest engine that is offered. Again Australian views here we don’t do small dinky engines.
Very interesting issue with the smoking engine… as you say it’s just like Hubnut’s Charade which he tried to fix with magic potions and partially succeeded with before doing an engine swap. I’d let it sit with some diesel / ATF poured into the bores to try and loosen up the piston rings which do seem like the likely culprit. It is a peculiar Diahatsu thing with it just occurring on no load, it does seem to come with age / mileage so is not yet a known issue with the other cars that you mentioned use that engine. I’d imagine these cars get a lot of cold starts and short urban journeys so that won’t help with bore wear and coking up. I bet you could quickly and easily do a decoke, drill bore hone, piston ring and big end bearing swap with the engine in the car….
My brother's Auris has the same problem with the engine. His mechanic told him to wait for it to cool down before doing the emissions test, and this made no sense to me - but after seeing what you said about the fan going on, I finally understand!
Before I got the Lancia I had, went to take a look at green Lupo. ( I still kind of like them ) Pictures made it look nice, but once I went to see it.. Well.. The other side looked like it was rubbed against a tree or building. Dashboard looked like it was cleaned with sandpaper and according to the seller you couldn't open the bonnet. The brothers of the seller had showed up looking annoyed, and it did kind of started looking bit dodgy. Did manage to get away ok though. Couple of days later bought the Y from air-cooled Porsche specialist.
I've seen rings stick in the pistons on cars that are driven too gently due to carbon buildup which causes oil burning, my advice is to give it a ridiculous thrashing at like 4000 revs for a good 20 mins along a dual carriageway and see if that helps at all, worked a treat on a Tigra I had!
I mean... the male Brits watching the channel probably have at some point in their lives but it might have been a while ago. After all, every man's been a school boy at some point in his life.
Not sure I would describe it as broken until after an MoT. Its just a bit asthmatic. From memory Hubnut's charade smoked a similar amount and got an MoT. I'd be more worried about hidden tin worm infestation unless it has been rust treated and we know that is unlikely!
Oy, I kind of like boring! Too much of what we see is the world in peril, etc, etc. I like seeing someone openly admitting they can make mistakes buying a cheap car & planning what to do about it. Being an interesting shade of burgundy helps too. First impression is it wants to live, hope it works out!
So the oil gets into the combustion chamber and burns. Daihatsu, tuned by Ferrari F1. There are a lot of those little Daihatsus around in NZ. I test drove one, and found it pretty nice, though inclined to sway on bends. But what modern Japanese small cars is good at is space: loads of space in the cabin. Put a great big box on top of the platform, and in the case of Nissan, embrace the cube, and with Daihatsu, disguise it with curves. When I first got into a Toyota Spade, there was so much space I laughed. Like getting into a black cab--I think you actually could wear a top hat in one. I've got a little Toyota with one of those "The engine is cold" lights. You'd think it was telling you how long before you could start caning it, but in a city box with a CVT, not really. But what I dislike, and must work out how to turn off, is the "Eco" light. I know how hard I'm pushing the throttle, thank you, and don't need a warning light flickering. Hope Skit doesn't have one of those. But of course, what you are really doing is assembling the cast for a children's book series: _The Adventures of Dumpit and Skit_. Hilda will sometimes talk to them about her track days, and the C6 will look down its aristocratic nose at them and offer grand remarks about how evocative smells are, and sometimes, when it's really quiet, they'll go and gently try to wake up the SM.
I'm getting strong Toyota Yaris vibes from that car... for the money, on balance I think you've done well because I paid twice as much as that for a *very* shady Toyota Yaris that's four years older. Like you, I hate buying cars at the best of times - and especially from "bomb site" dealers. BTW - my Yaris also has a "cold coolant" light.
Daihatsu is owned by Toyota, so that figures. I think they sometimes have the interior of Daihatsus done by design apprentices at Toyota--or in the case of one I drove for a bit, the work experience kid.
I have the same car and it’s burning a liter of oil every 200 miles. I did an engine flush and that seemed to had brought oil burning gap to about 700 miles and then I did another flush which has taken it back to a liter every 200 miles.
Should have asked my sister if you could have borrowed her 2014 Micra, she can't drive at the moment (health reasons) and it would have been good to keep it going. Space in the back is fine, does need a hole sorting on the exhaust and one rear window doesn't open but other than that and the 130k miles it's an OK car.
My friends toyota corolla had the same issue. His issue was that the oil was too runny😅 the quickoil places use fully synthetic 0w-40 oil and the toyota wanted semisyntetic 10w-30 or 40..can't remember. He cganged the oil and hey presto..the smoking stopped
Fantastic colour Kitch. Problem with the "Citybugs" and the i10 etc many many many people are shopping within your criteria and they hold ALL the money - my Mrs has a Matiz 59 plate with sub 30k miles - she is not happy with it but it goes and goes well - good one petrol and insurance a bit heavy on tax ............. when she moans I tell her what a similar i10 would cost and her idea of costing @£4k tops goes out the window
I actually like Skit, its a nice colour, hope the issues are easy to fix. You will be making the people jealous who has the BBQ recently with all Skit's smoke. 😂😂😂
Does the car have a gummed up oil breather system putting pressure onto all the other things you mentioned? When picking the treatment solution look for the words 'magic, miracle or mechanic in a can'' on the bottle. Good luck and I await with interest the chosen solution.
Call that smoky.. ? Nah, Hubnut's Charade was much worse than that. You could run that for ages, so long as you keep an eye on the oil level. Also, I'd give the car a good service,, as it doesn't seem to have had much of that. Also, rear seat room v boot space. I think you'll find it's the same as the Mk2 Yaris..., the rear seat slides backwards and forwards, so you've got great flexibility over how much seat and boot space is available.
Very similar to a mk1 yaris, I would expect it to be identical but it tries to look different even though it clearly is the same, like the facelift version it has the 3 cylinder engine and silver knobs for the climate control. The 1KR-FE apparently...might have low tension piston rings, Toyota had some issues with oil burning on engine of that era. It might grow on you.
I have just bought a car that I thought was alright. But it's not. - needs a timing chain (I can't believe I didn't hear the rattle) - leaking oil - injector washer went years ago so it leaked diesel all over the engine so it's now covered in tar - has an oil pressure DTC - DTC stop start command relay shorted to ground - and a dead glow plug Apart from all this it's fine. 🙈
Well if you need a new engine, rather than use up your ramp time I can recommend a West Wales couple who are rather experienced in Daihatsu engine swaps.
although it might take many, many months to be fixed🤣

I believe sirion had hydraulic power steering, where the Charade had electric and I think this is the reason the Sirion is slightly heavier on fuel than the Charade. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Sirion has electric PAS. And weighs more than the ultra-light Charade.
I’d try an oil change and add Engine Restore-the stuff works wonders! It will restore compression and sort out the smoke issue.
Start at the beginning, check the air filter, oil change with filter, check engine breather, and then see if it still smokes.
Then, it's a compression test.
These engines seem to be prone to oil burning, perhaps owners subject them to short runs and prolonged oil changes.
Best of luck.
A compression test won't tell you anything if (as is likely) it's the oil control rings.
If he solves the issue. The Welsh maybe interested
It might be worn valve guides or even valve stem seals, but you got to start somewhere.
A compression test won't hurt, it's highly unlikely that only the oil control rings, alone will be worn.
@@jbz2079 The oil rings don't wear out, they get gummed up with carbon/sludge.
I drove one of these that was a loan car for an ex-Daihatsu dealer, had over 200k on it and didn't smoke at all, went bloody well for a 1.0, so I would be guessing it's something small. Good luck!
28:24 at least you know a couple of engine swap experts on these little engines… time for the Hubnuts south coast holiday!
That restorative oil is by Valvoline. I'll be trying it myself in the future!
22:00 "have you ever felt a schoolboys trousers?"
No. Absolutely not. 😂
These engines turbo well would love to see this on the dyno back when i was in full swing as a tech i could do oil and filter spark plugs air filter and cabin filter in just over 20 mins there ace was on an aygo mind
Might be a good idea to take a mechanic with you next time you buy a car…. Oh wait, yeah!
As a mechanic, definitely take one with you, I'm usually far too into said car to check for real faults, that or the "I can fix that" attitude 😂
That's a great idea!
I love the Naked
Shame for problem. Hope it's a cheap fix
Worth having just for the sound it makes!
Have you heard it? I wouldn't say it sounds great haha!
That random thing in the boot you couldn't identify is a pod for a vaporesso xros. That's my daily vape. It's unused too. Bonus!
See, Skit has been trying to give up smoking.
@@michaelwright2986 hahaha, damn why didn't I think of this
My wife had one for a while - well actually hers was the Subaru Justy but it's the same car, later repurposed as the Perodua Myvi.
I am told that the 1.3 is in fact the Yaris engine...No idea if that is correct, I am only relalying 2nd hand information..
@@paulluce2557 i own it & yes it's a Yaris engine! even the 1.5 too.
The item in the boot was a Vape device pod. Love the car especially the £35 road tax 😅
Certainly be easier to fix this properly than most other cars, but I'm really hoping to avoid that!
12:18 could the fuel tank be dented? Had the exact same experience buying my Y reg Yaris. 😅
A little bit of a Tardis. Quite like it. Hope you get it sorted!
It's very much like a Tardis!
19:26 this cracked me up, I don't know why lol.
My brother's Auris has the same problem with the engine. His mechanic told him to wait for it to cool down before doing the emissions test, and this made no sense to me - but after seeing what you said about the fan going on, I finally understand!
Ha! Yeah, it could be why...
Make sure the breathing system is clear... can often cause smoke issues...
Nice Colour and ...errr...eerrm... Nice colour..
Rich, you'll have to stop hanging around with Hubnut Ian.. Haha 😂😂
Never realised the engine was the same as the city bug.
Great Video!
“Have you ever felt a school boys trousers ?” 😂😂😂😂😂 ffs
I mean... the male Brits watching the channel probably have at some point in their lives but it might have been a while ago.
Fiesta-size sounds like a Mexican Aerobics class
Oy, I kind of like boring! Too much of what we see is the world in peril, etc, etc. I like seeing someone openly admitting they can make mistakes buying a cheap car & planning what to do about it. Being an interesting shade of burgundy helps too. First impression is it wants to live, hope it works out!
Does the handbook not tell you how to turn on the 'Hello happy' ?
School boy's trousers and investigating stains on the rear seat!!!! Close.
Dodgy
@@michaelwright2986 The switchgear looks the same and yes, just the driver's electric window switch lighting is normal.
This car reminds me of my Swift - tardis interior with lots of scritchy plastics.
24:55 i think it's the tip of a vape???
Should have gone for a Suzuki splash. Wifes is on 175000 now. And only £20 to tax
Alternatively, look at the engine breather system, take it apart and actually check to see if any of is blocked...
24:50 its a vape pen cartridge
I agree. Quite why it is there though... Coincidentally, it does seem that the exhaust has taken up vaping.

Call that smoky.. ? Nah, Hubnut's Charade was much worse than that. You could run that for ages, so long as you keep an eye on the oil level. Also, I'd give the car a good service,, as it doesn't seem to have had much of that.
Also, rear seat room v boot space. I think you'll find it's the same as the Mk2 Yaris..., the rear seat slides backwards and forwards, so you've got great flexibility over how much seat and boot space is available.
i believe the replacement engine he fitted to that rot box is smoking and burning oil now
The older model looked nicer and classier. I like oddball cars!😊
I believe the platform is more closely related to the mk2 Yaris.
Lovely shiny bodywork though.
I have just bought a car that I thought was alright. But it's not.
- needs a timing chain (I can't believe I didn't hear the rattle)
- leaking oil
- injector washer went years ago so it leaked diesel all over the engine so it's now covered in tar
- has an oil pressure DTC
- DTC stop start command relay shorted to ground
- and a dead glow plug
Apart from all this it's fine. 🙈
