When the first one hit, most of us including the news thought it was an accident. When the 2nd one hit, there was no doubt it was intentional.

I was 19, living with my fiance- I was off work and he just left. (We lived in California) The tv was on and I was drinking coffee... then the second plane hit and the neighbor came to the door. He asked "Is this really happening right now?" I said "Yeah, man- I think it is." We sat down and just watched. Fucking horrifying. My in laws to be lived in New York at the time, and I couldn't get ahold of my man on the phone- he worked for the school district at that time, and everything was locked down. I'll never forget it- plus, most of my immediate family is active military, even now. It wasn't funny, and it's still not- never will be. Except for Shane Gillis with the Australian accent. Only guy that ever made me laugh about it
As an Australian, I give that joke 9 out of 11
I was 16 going on 17 in the 11th grade. I just sat down to start my metal shop class, when suddenly the wood shop teacher from the room next door barged in and told our teacher to turn on the TV. Immediately we saw both towers on fire and just kind of stared in confusion. After about 10 minutes of gawking, our metal shop teacher got real quit and awkward and told us to sit quietly and do nothing the rest of the class period. Then in between each class, there was dead silence in the hallways and everyone was completely puzzled. Each class just had us sitting there staring at the TVs in silence and further confusion
On a brighter note, I remember the immediate post-9/11 aftermath in the early internet where there was a ton of patriotic and anti-terrorist content on entertainment sites likes Newgrounds and JibJab. My friends and I spent a considerable amount of time playing Flash games about punching or shooting Bin Laden.
Nobody was telling 9/11 jokes on 9/12...

I was dancing in Jersey City with the Israeli Mossad while they documented the event.
That “boat” that was blown up was the USS Cole. It took a hard hit and 17 sailors were killed. She still serves today
I remember my colleague barging in to my office and saying "They're bombing New York with Missiles".
I was in art class in 9th grade.
I spent the day searching through blood and bones for my brother. He was in northern Canada.

I was 3 years old and i swear my consciousness switched on right after 9/11 so i always thought when hearing about it that it happened before my lifetime
TV Productions class, 10th grade. We had the news on getting ready for the morning announcements and the librarian came in and said "a plane just hit the World Trade Center."
School got cancelled shortly after the second plane hit iirc.
One of the most crazy vivid days of my life. I was only seven but I still remember my mom being glued to the tv which I thought was strange because she hates tv. But my dad called her and told her to turn on the news. When she said there wasn’t going to be school that day I was regretfully really happy because we had our math and reading placement tests that day and I didn’t want to do them.
I still kick myself for being happy I didn’t have to take a couple tests because thousands of people were dying. Being so young, I guess I didn’t really understand how serious the situation really was until the months following when all you saw on tv was the cleanup effort and interviews of the people that were there that day.
Everyone’s lives, young and old, changed forever that day.
I was a schoolboy in the UK, so it was just after school. Cycling to my friends house, saw on the TV the planes hitting, thought "lol that's crazy" then went outside to play.
It's kinda crazy how the whole thing shocked the US so terribly. They felt untouchable up to that point, meanwhile in the UK we were super used to terrorism because of the IRA. To this day Americans act so exceptional about it, and they cannot ever have an honest discussion about why it happened in the first place. They'll give sympathy to the IRA for the crimes of the British against the Irish but never self reflect on why it happened to them in 2001. They would rather say it was a conspiracy by their own President than admit it may have had something to do with their imperialism and world policing.

I was in 2nd grade, living in Queens when this happened. Our school got evacuated, and none of us knew what was happening until we got home. It wasn't until I got home that I saw on tv pictures of the second plane hitting the south tower. Never forget.

I was in college and my best friend enlisted after watching it on repeat.
He came back from serving a totally broken man.
My cousin Tyler was being born as the towers hit. My aunt Vanessa didn't want any stress at all that day. Can't imagine what it was like when my uncle Joe came in and shouted "someone's blowing up new york".
Working at the airport in Memphis, TN. I literally thought WW3 had just begun. Every plane near was grounded at once. It was fuckin' insane.

I was in 4th grade. I had just gotten to school and the home room teacher had the TV on watching the news after the first place got hit. Some other kids were going around saying the world trade center was hit by a plane and I was like "the what?"
Teacher ended up turning off the TV and we went about our school day as usual, and then they let out school early, like around noon. So I went home and I remember that's when my parents really started watching Fox News like 24/7.

I was in 5th grade. They all took us to the gym and gave us a speech about bullies. They didn't tell us what happened. We just all assumed somebody was bullying somebody.
I was working on the roof of a relatively tall building (DISA) not far from the Pentagon and watched it happen
My mom was pregnant with me on vacation in greece and I think this is why I turned out so overwhelmingly well and not at all messed up in the head finding it funny.
I had just got finished talking to a recruiter in the hallway my senior year of high school lol.
My mom was 8 months pregnant with me when 9/11 happened so she was at home watching the news that day
I was in second grade in florida and my school day was completely normal. It was already a planned half day for some reason so i came home around noon and i just remember my mom sitting in her room with the light of tv on her just staring at it in disbelief. The rest of the day i dont remember except later that night a bunch of my adult family and their friends got together and were talking about it with the news on and there was already an impression that we were going to war with SOMEONE even if we didn't know exactly who yet.

California morning of September 11th I woke up, headed to the kitchen seeing my mom, aunt and the TV on. My mom quickly tells me i’m not going to school. Thinking not too much of it since my mom would sometimes not have me to school due to lack of babysitter. After eating cereal I tried looking for shows to watch that’s not for baby’s and it was just all Breaking news but i didn’t recognized it was what happened in New york. I was more annoyed i couldn’t watch power rangers; and i think i was told what happened later that day or few days later.
As someone not from America, i have a question. How come so many people are cool with posting videos or pictures of 9/11 (like the thumbnail) where thousands of people died and those peoples families have to see pictures of the event that caused irreversible damage to them. Its kinda fucked up.

I was 4 months and 10 days old napping while my mother was showering my two older brothers got home from school my mom hid the remote and they thought it was a movie scary shit to hear when I was a kid knowing what happened at that time
