The Mongolians implemented cruel and oppressive rule over the Han Chinese, but the reign was short-lived, only about 250 years. The nomads found the abundance, stability of the agricultural life and the Han culture more attractive. Soon they were assimilated into the Han Chinese society. In 1945 the northern part of Mongolia went independent (supported by Russia), but the southern part is still a province of China (Inner Mongolia) . While Outer Mongolia is now very "Russianised," Inner Mongolia is quite closely affiliated with China, both culturally and politically. You can find many (Inner) Mongolian dances and songs. The latter often sung in Mongolian, followed by in Mandarin. The Han Chinese are quite receptive to other cultures, including those the minorities in Tibet and Xingkiang.
