- On this week's edition of Under10Hours, we are taking a look at one of the most legendary wrestling games of all time, WWF No Mercy. After missing out on this game my entire life. Now that the game is celebrating it's 20th birthday this month, I decided that now is a better time than ever to take a look at this game that's legacy proceeds it.

Today it hits 20 years old! I was 6 when it came out and now I'm 26 and still love and play it like it's 2000 ❤🔥.

I was 20 when this came out so I wasn't really into it. But my younger cousin and his friends lived this game. They used to make their own wwf tv show and have scripts and all kinds of stuff. Very interesting especially when they would make a new wrestler and give him a background and his own music. Very fun to watch

I had my own wrestling federation with wrestling toys. I remember one story i came up with was Al Sno becoming Vince McMahons right hand man and a succesful businessman Alan Snofield. I was close to making him my WWF champion but i just couldnt go through with giving him a win against The Rock.
I was shocked 5 or 6 years later with how close it was to Bradshaw becoming John Brsdshaw Layfield.
Big roster, good sound, insanely deep for the time story mode, outstanding CAW and, most importantly, AKI's Hall of Fame worthy control scheme.
Heck, it's beyond deep for the time. I've yet to play a wrestling game since then with a more involved story mode.
@@joshuahewlett4340 Plus you're not always punished for losing matches. Sometimes you're actually encouraged to lose to go further down the rabbit hole.
A wrestler whose entire persona revolves around cheese would literally just be me in my everyday life.
Al Snow and Steve Blackman's tag team was called Head Cheese. I think Al said it was because Steve was from Wisconsin. They used to wear the cheese hats so AKI made them giant weapons that make the same sound as steel steps xD
I was born the year this game came out! I have an older brother and he got it so I grew up playing this back when I was 3-4 years old. My brother and old cousins raised me around video games and this was one of em. I remember always crying whenever my brother would kick my ass, and I'd rage so hard and tried to do so some wrestling moves on him but me being super tiny he just chucked me against the wall LOL
This game is timeless, and with mods it just makes the game so much more enjoyable.

Best tactic in those infuriating handicap matches is to constantly spam double axehandles off the top rope (not all characters do them however). Opponent can block them but not damage you in the process, and if you miss you don't take damage either. After landing it, do a submission move on the floored guy's head. Eventually you'll get a submission out of one of them.
day of reckoning on gamecube was the last good wrestling game that felt like no mercy but on steroids and a tad more arcady and faster. And it was balanced perfectly. And they also had the spirit meter. Nowadays wrestling games are too easy to win, increase the difficulty and they reverse everything. The balance is all wrong in later wrestling games.
NO Mercy is and will always be the BEST wrestling game. Nothing comes close, I wish to see a remaster.

I was 11. My brothers and I played it almost daily. I found out just last month that Survival Mode has 100 combatants. I had never reached the end before until then. I also after over 20 years finally bought Godfather's Ho. 😆

AKI was working on WCW Mayhem 2 under EA when Vince bought WCW and that became Def Jam Vendetta. Ian from 616 Entertainment has a retrospective on DJV.

@@jjthapyro4130 Yuke's is making the AEW game with the No Mercy director Hideyuki Iwashita aka Geta-san as the development advisor. Kenny Omega said in 2.Show with Kip Sabian that they're looking to mesh his ideology with Yuke's'. I think this is the closest we're going to get to No Mercy 2.0. Kenny also gave the impression that he runs ideas by Geta and that he receives updates from Geta directly. Sounds like the project is good hands. Pulse broke down the trailer and though it's still early and they're not saying a ton about it, I'm pretty hopeful about the game.

Also you can unlock legends by eliminating them in survival mode don’t necessarily need to buy them from shop
SVR 06 is the closest Yuke's has gotten to No Mercy IMO. Well that is until the AEW game drops with Hideyuki Iwashita as developmental advisor like you mentioned.
i agree. no mercy may have better gameplay but svr 06 is a bit like no mercy but has updated graphics and more fluid movements.
@@heavyhitter5538 IMO AKI's large library of hand drawn Wrestling, Puro, and MMA animatons were still better than Yuke's stiff hand drawn ones and the mocapped ones they were bringing in at the time. I'm not a fan of mo-cap moves. Intros and cutscenes done right by actual wrestlers is fine)

Even so the contemporary AKI games to SD 2006, the Def Jam and Ultimate Muscle games had the same animatons made more fluid to fit the styles of those games and I think they were still better. But tt's all to taste. I'm just glad AEW, Virtual Basement, Mdickie, Arcade Action Wrestling (formally the Chikara branded game), Retromania, and others are releasing games so there's finally options.
To be honest I'm not going to have high hopes for the Aew game because it might not live up to the hype. They only have one person who worked on No Mercy helping to develop the game. They need the whole aki team but hopefully the guy hasn't forgotten how to.develop that game engine.
@@jjthapyro4130 It's one guy, but the only person above him was the Prez/CEO/Executive Producer. Yuke's made a pretty serviceable engine used on the WWE Wrestlemania/Day of Reckoning games and Japanese exclusive PS2 games Wrestle Kingdom 1 and 2 and from what I can tell all they had was Shunsuke Katsumata, who was an AKI 3D animator and one of Geta's assistant directors on No Mercy and a sound guy named Takumi Kon. The most important part of Geta's engagement IMO is the design ideology that comes with him. He was in charge of fun, logical sim games and he *could* be the missing piece that takes Yuke's from the chore that is "beat down this opponent down until he's in the red---> Quicktime Event ------> Press A to lose to Big Show and watching long, canned mo-capped suicide dive animations to actually feeling like you're doing the moves yourself. Like the way you're able to do the Worm and People's Elbow yourself in No Mercy. Or things for intros like choosing walks and taunts for intros rather than while sections. I think that's what he brings to the table. And Omega already confirmed hand-drawn animations. An advisor like Geta and a team that works well together, a true AKI fan like Kenny overseeing it, and no publisher butting is the best we can ask for. I hope I'm not wrong but I've got my fingers crossed 😂😂

Buh Buh spelled his name like that when he first jumped to the fed. Ken Shamrock had left by this time or had his role greatly reduced, he was also in AKI's January 2000 Japan-only released, Virtual Pro Wrestling 2. HBK retired from in ring stuff and made rare appearances as Commissioner or as a special guest ref in Rock/HHH matches to ultimately Sweet Chin Music the Rock.
Im 30 & just recently purchased a copy of this and its still as good as when i first played it as a kid
I had so much fun playing this game. I was 8 y.o when this came out. My 19 y.o uncle brought the game home to play himself, but I saw it and nagged the shit out of him to play it.

I was 14 when this came out. I played through everything on this game. My friends and I would play this joker for hours on end during the weekend

Lol I remember the first time I played No Mercy I played a no pin no submission no dq TKO only match. Kane did a total 27 piledrivers to my Triple H before I knocked him out with a chair

You can go baccstage during the royal rumble, in the settings you have to set ring out to hardcore and turn on submissions, tko and pinfalls for losses. The best place to go is the loccer room cause the A.I is least likely to leave the loccer room. I think they're just programmed to go bacc to the ring.
Back in the day I thought there was a problem with my N64 console for whiping out all my progress in No Mercy, because the same happened to my progress in "Star Wars - Rogue Squadron" ...
The game will be released next year in 2022. That's great cause they can have plenty of time of perfecting the game. Another reason why I say it is because AKI didn't have enough time to finish the No Mercy game. The game was rushed in development and it wasn't completely done

Awesome! I've heard a lot about these wrestling games, they look like a lot of fun. I had no idea about the mods, and the new upcoming game, those look amazing! Really neat stuff!
1. Simplicity and ease of gameplay that is also deep
2. Excellent animations that had weight to them
3. One of the best rosters in any wrestling game. Not too bloated, not too small
4. Accurate movesets. You don't see guys doing moves you wouldn't expect them to do
All of these combine to make an all timer. Yukes came somewhat close to nailing the combo a scant few times in the last 20+ years, but they were always missing something.
Only flaw it the game was the length of entrances. Other that that it was sick.
I still have N64 just because of WWF No Mercy.... forever awesome!!!
Cool! I've started playing it just this month, playing some old N64 games, and realized I had somehow skipped this one. Playing on my phone with Xbox controller, but I absolutely love it!
If you have a Xbox you can emulate it thru Retroarch

You forgot to mention that if you change the characters 4th outfit (if I remember correctly) they will be wearing it in the intro video. My brothers and I would always change the wrestlers clothes so they’d look stupid in the intro. Small things like that that I always loved

Great video! Don't forget there is a hidden story that would of unlocked for the unreleased gbc version. So you need a gameshark to unlock it.

The game makes you give the title back to Triple H because the developers were following actual storylines that happened in the WWE around that time.

Loved the unlock-able characters. As a kid who loved the show, it was great to get Linda, JR, Earl, and a Ho lol.
By the way, for those looking for a cartridge, the EUR-1 variant doesn't have any visible blood. Fortunately it doesn't interfere with First Blood matches, you can still win/lose those.

Wtf are you talking about! No mercy was way easier than wrestlemania was! I remember having to use the manager/p3 cheat with my brother to beat some of these crazy matches😂
I absolutely love this game. I got so determined to finish the story modes to 100% completion, that I handwrote flowcharts on sheets of paper to keep track. But its enduring legacy for me will be the Triple Threat Ladder Match. My brother, best friend of the time, and I would have marathon matches. We just all got so good, that it was near impossible to win without a fluke near the beginning, OR, in most cases--competing in matches that would last near 3 hours. The best was always catching an opponent's kick as a reversal, while my special was on, and spinning him around into a Stone Cold Stunner. Better, bygone days. What a blast.
Played the hell out of this game when it first released! Yes, I was also one of those frustrated owners that had the nasty bug. Having to save often and and reload data was a pain, lol.

I was born in 2000 when the game came out. But i didn't start playing No Mercy or Wrestlemania 2000 until I was 3 years old. This game gave me so many memories and I still play it even in today in 2020!!!!😢😢
Me and the boys played this religiously with our created wrestlers and belts…BELTS THAT WOULD SAVE TO THE WINNING CHARACTER. Incredible.
I like No Mercy a lot. Fantastic game. The engine is a large factor in that. However, I put Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 above it. Also, for gameplay and number of wrestlers available, Fire Pro Wrestling World higher as well. But No Mercy even twenty years later is still incredibly fun to pick up and relive that era. Out of curiosity, have you played either of those games?

I was 8 when it came out. Never did own it. Only ever had WCW World Tour. I did used to rent it numerous times from 2000-2005. I only ever seen it for sale once at walmart for 89.99 so I instead got Smackdown for 40.
The one dislike is from the a-holes who made WCW Nitro. Great video and looking forward to watching the rest of the stuff on your channel, dude!

Considered we can use ladders, tables, backstage, and the cage matches are amazing for the time. Even little nuances like doing the head pound head grapple let you bang their heads on the ring bell, ladder, and chairs. Or propping ladders up in the corner and laying opponents on the ladder And maybe I am wrong but couldn't we do a type of conchairto

I never had a problem w the handicap matches... I beat the APA in less than 5 minutes on Expert... my brother made me put the difficulty level on the highest n it did in turn make me a way better player... I wish The AKI wrestling games were online!

It seems that we going to have a next-gen version of No Mercy. As all elite wrestling(AEW) is making a brand new wrestling game with the team of Yuke's and the director of no mercy.
Hell yea. Hideyuki Iwashita aka Geta-san is the developmental advisor! He was the director for the AKI N64 games and Def Jam Vendetta as well as working on Fight for New York and their Ultimate Muscle franchise. Yuke's is the developer. Fomer THQ employee Bryan Williams has been working for Yuke's for years now and he is a brilliant designer.
I still play this game but on a emulator. My favorite match is Jim Ross vs ho for intercontinental championship😂
I was lucky I got the fixed version at the Berryessa Flea Market back in 2011.

Excited for the AEW game. Can't wait to see it's create a wrestler options I hope it's not insanely unique as 2k. I like 2ks but it took me 2 days total of about 14 or so hours to finish fully creating myself and moves in game.
I think we can all agree that the N64 and the PS2 were the consoles that hosted all of the best wrestling games of all time! 😊👍

It's nice to finally see a game that has surpassed No Mercy which is WWE 2K22. It only took 21 years lol I thought 2K19 was really close,] but the striking was still sub par. Now with the engine rebuilt. Striking has become much better and the ability to block and dodge is nice. While it's not perfect it still Has collision detection problems like it always did. No doubt it's a big step in the right direction. All we need is the GM mode to improve and it will be hard to beat. Even by the likes of Yukes, with their AEW game.

While extremely difficult, it's not impossible to find a No Mercy cartridge with the bug fix for less than $300+. Because of how obscure it is, sometimes people will list a fixed version as the normal one on sites like Ebay. It was a few years ago, but I bought a complete copy of No Mercy with the fixed cartridge for about $80 if memory serves. It doesn't happen often, but keep your eyes peeled for the -1 on the label, you never know when one will turn up

Is it so much better than Revenge that it's worth paying the pricetag that comes with no mercy? Cheapest i found online is for 40 and I'm on a budget. Is it that good that i just have to own it?

My -1 isn’t on the front of the cartridge. It’s on the back. It says NUS-USA/CAN-1 so do have the unfixed version since it’s not on the front?

Haha I rage on quite a few levels in championship mode. But you just have to get good and get used to reversing everything.
The handicap matches are a pain in the butt you can make it easier by going outside and pulling a guy out. Target a wrestler and work a part. Move around a lot and move from the inside to the outside. You can throw them on the table and work those submission there, too. If you wanna be cheap you can beat a guy with weapons on the outside without get DQ'd. You can toss weapons from the outside in and smack them without being DQ'd as well. If you're backstage throw a guy in the truckbed and work a part or beat him in the back of the truck..
I didnt even know how good this game was. I remember picking it up at a flee market for $5 because i thought it looked so cool. I ended up raging because of the handicap match and ended up damaging the game. If only i knew how special that game is after all.
I don't think your difficulty setting matters in Championship Mode or Survival. I think it depends on the title you're going for/how many people you eliminate. Not 100% on that tho.
You could debug your cartridge by playing as Scotty 2 Hottie and doing the worm this somehow worked as I used it and it never wiped again. Also you could put you CAWs in the intro movie of the game by copying them to attire set 4 for wrestlers that were in the intro.
Yea I heard if you do Rikishi's stink face, you can unlock all the hidden characters.

You could debug your WWF no mercy cartridge by playing as Scotty 2 hottie and doing the worm unless somehow worked as I used it and it never wiped again. Also you could put your create a wrestlers into the movie intro by copying your create a wrestler into a tire set for for the wrestler that you wanted to replace in the movie intro (example: when Edge is running down to the ring in the opening movie replace his attire set 4 with your create a wrestler and your create a wrestler will be shown instead of Edge)

I've got the one with a -1 in the number, phew! I've still got all 4 aki n64 wrestling games, never sold em, I bought them when they came out new, and I have many other n64 games like quake 1 and 2 and Duke nukem 64 I've become a bit of a collector mainly cus they're so cheap but also because the n64 is still a bit tricky to perfectly emulate, unlike snes, nes, gb, md.
My copy would erase everything if I completed every lane in the championship mode, so if I played championship mode I would just have to make sure to not actually complete it 100% and it would be fine.. I did not know about the serial number with a -1 being a patched version.. I'll have to keep my eyes pealed.
If you made Trips tap on the outside he would have been on losing it and you could have tossed him back in and pinned him.
I miss the old control scheme. these days it's nothing but QTEs. I don't FEEL like I am playing the game at all. Just watching it and pushing a button every now and then
Great video I do like this game but the thing I hate when you unlock stuff like wrestlers it locks everything back up which is very annoying I hate that no matter what if you play this on season mode or survival mode the same thing always happens I wish this issue was fixed it would of made this game much better I just prefer the other 3 world tour revenge and wrestle mania 2000 with those 3 that doesnot happen at why does it happen in this game I just don’t understand it when I got my copy in 2000 and when playing on hardcore championship mode when I save my stuff with my memory card even unlocking wrestlers it pisses me off when all my saved stuff is locked back up that to me is bullshit is why I like the other 3 of the aki wrestling games we’re better because of that reason I just like played the other 3.

I think this game was great for its time. But to say that it's the greatest wrestling game of all time to this day is just straight going off of nostalgia. To the people who still play this game today... I'm so sorry but it's just not. This is coming from someone who's played it all from WRESTLEMANIA for Nintendo, to 2K22 now. I'd play WWE Day of Reckoning before I touch this game again for too many reasons to type. I believe 2k19 was probably the closest we'll come to a great, fast pace, great looking and creative Wrestling game.
