As somebody who has a Six and a Big Six, I can see how it is limiting. That said, I knew what I was getting into with the Big Six and it fixed upgrade issues I was having at the time. I think it is an excellent centerpiece for a home studio so long as you have no problem working within its limitations. However, I think those limitations which may not be a concern for a home studio would definitely be glaring problems in a professional production environment. As for the preamps, pushing them is a "no-no" and SSL has said as much as they were designed to be super clean. I think I see some Rupert Neve products in your future as it sounds like that is something you may appreciate way more than the SSL approach. 😁

I’ve had the big six since launch paired with the SSL Fusion and BUS + on the master, and I’ve put it up against things done in high end studios on Lynx Aurora and Burl converters and it STILL sounds as good, if not better at times. I would say the benefits outweigh any limitations, and whatever limitations it has you learn to work within those parameters which end up being conducive to creativity. Big Six has a SOUND and that is why even though I can afford much higher end gear and converters, it gets the job done at a high level. Best of luck on your journey tho man keep on rockin!

I’m surprised to hear about this. It’s an interesting take on why you sold the BIG SIX. I disagree with most of the things you said, but to each his own. You either vibe with gear, or you don’t. There is no wrong answer. We can only offer opinions. I’m my case, I think it’s a fantastic little mixer. I got it when it first came out. Sonically, it’s a very clean mixer. That’s the whole idea behind the SuperAnalogue design. It has no transformers inside, which is what gives gear that pleasing distortion when you push preamps really hard. The API and the Phoenix Audio sounds more pleasing when it distorts, because they have transformers, which adds the pleasing harmonic distortion. I have the API 1608 and the BIG SIX sits alongside it as a sub mixer and sounds fantastic. No corners cut, even with the conversion, in my opinion. I own the Apogee Symphony Special Edition and have no problems using them both together. Like a few people have mentioned before, converter technology has sort of peaked. You really need top quality trained ears to objectively be able to tell the difference, in a lot of cases. I’m blessed to have an amazing set of Uber expensive Barefoot MM12 monitors. Those things are insane for accuracy. It reveals no flaws with the BIG SIX and its converters. This mixer is literally a tiny Origin console, with a simplified eq. Look at the specs, they are literally the same. The other thing you mentioned was about no expandability, which is also kind of odd, since it has a SUM input to main bus feature, which allows you to connect other mixers in a cascading fashion. My API 1608 is connected this way. No signal degradation. It’s the real deal. This isn’t a starter mixer with questionable specs. Anyway, like I said, to each his own. If it doesn’t work for you, that’s cool, but I thought your listeners should hear other opinions. I have outboard gear to color the sound, like the API, and Neve 1073, blah, blah, and combine it all together with the clean super analogue channels adding nothing and BOOM, amazing mix. Your mileage may vary.

It is the right combo of features for the synths I have, but the videos I had seen made me question the converters. If you can use them with the Apogee Symphony then they must be fine. I also like the Origin so you have given me the confidence to move forward with the Big Six. Thank-you :)

I love the big six,it is more than enough for what i need ,sound wise ,it is right there with most of the most expensive gear, it sounds very analog to me ,the master buss Compressor is so underrated 😮. I think most of us ,including myself are suffering from gear purchasing syndrome 😂 We are always looking for the next gear satisfy our addiction
Because of my love for the ssl big six sound,i bought the ssl 6 for my live gigs,it gave me that studio grade quality when i am performing live
back in the days people pay thousands to record in very expensive studios that dont come close to what we have today in our home studio, with all the limitations they had back them, they made Grammy award winning songs ..today any skilled person can make great music with just a lapto, a 50 dollar sound card and a second hand shure sm58 microphone .for now i have decided to save money and stop buying unnecessarily,my goal right now is to focus on being creative..one more thing, i know many large studios that till this day are still making great music with pro tools hd 10 /the old hd TDM hardware. @FrancisJoa Год назад +4

The Big Six would be a banger if all ,,fader" channels would have analog insert points so that you could use them as direct outs while tracking with another interface. This is the biggest problem with this desk. It forces you to use the build in interface to record with and that wasn´t smart.

The flaw with this video is your not taking price into account.
You have swapped and compared the big six to multiple units totalling all most 4 TIMES its value! Of course it’s going to be better!
The B6 is definitely limited and I hope one day to outgrow it but for the price there’s very little like it.
I also LOVE that it doesn’t have software my god I HATE having to use multiple routings! However my outboard selection is quite small and dedicated to tracking mode or 2 bus mode so I never feel the limitations that much.
I wish the bus comp had more options but running it parallel is a game changer so SO good! Again for the price there’s very little that can take it on head to head.
It sounds to me that you simply had enough work (which is awesome) to buy much better stuff! I’d love a lynx and a pile of preamps and other hardware but again that’s SO much more money than just the B6 just for the preamps you mentioned it’s almost twice the value.
In my mind what you’re doing isn’t comparing two similar products or price points, you’ve levelled up man which is amazing but of course it’s going to be better! You can’t really compare the two! One set up cost 2.6 - 3k and the other cost almost 10k!
Love the new set up though and keep the vids coming as always dude!

I feel like all these reasons are kind of BS considering you're solving these "problems" with multiple pieces of gear that cost 15 times what the Big Six offers. Of course everyone knows there are outboard units and converters that are in the $5k-$10k price range, but bang-for-your-buck the Big Six is an optimal choice.
You get an interface, analog preamps, analog EQ, several stages of analog compression, analog summing for under $3k? Nothing else even competes in that bracket!

I was thinking the exact same things when the Big six came out and swayed me from buying it. The thing SSL is known for is mixing, routing and summing...for a small format 8 channel mixer without full dynamics and transformers coloring as the signal passes does not really tap in to the potential of a 4000 G/E series console. Working on a beast like that is a whole different thing like apples and oranges. I think the API Box II would be a much better option what many people think the Six can do, but the price is much higher. Tnx for your honest insight.

I had forgot some of the features of the Big6 sense it first came out..like it being an interface and sort of an all in one solution SSL branded BOX. I was thinking to was more along the lines of the Xdesk were you can have an analog summing and mixing and tracking but with the freedom to choose your own interface & external effects.. yep it’s a high priced mid level mixer interface with a few SSL bells and whistles. I run all my gear thru my Xdesk and my interface is Avid 16*16 I/O using the Pro Tools HDX system and my controllers are the Avid Dock and S3..I have SSL xrack Eq’s, dynamics, g buss com, and a few other outboard pres and compressors, that I can insert on the xdesk. If it had a couple more channels, or the channels compressors were a little more flexible, maybe it would be worth it. What bugs me the most is that 8k is not selectable as an eq frequency. That’s just crazy since 8k is one of the things that SSL consoles are known for

In theory, you’re right about your take on “it’s 2023, why not have all options available?” But I know I get pretty distracted, uninspired, and hung up on unimportant details when the options lack clear limits or workflow lacks an obvious “right way to do it.”
For me and I’m sure others the songs I’ve made in a daw are my worst. I’d rather have a limited recording process with mediocre preamps and imperfect conversion if it results in a result of significantly more artistic value. Everyone is different, but I know for me, there’s no “analog pride” or “anti daw snobbery” going on, I’m just orders of magnitude less productive when I have access to dozens of virtual instruments, near limitless effects, and high resolution waveforms. Reminds me of people saying to put all your expenses on credit cards as to accumulate points making the implicit assumption that everyone has the same level of financial confidence and reliable self control (because it’s the interest paid on my card that’s been maxed out for a decade that’s paying for all those points after all hahaha)

Did you try analog out from the BiG SiX to your high end ADC? I agree the 96k limit of the USB sucks, but you aren't required to use it. Just like you can insert other preamps between the source and the stereo/mono channel ins, etc. The original SiX had no USB at all, which is fine by me, my RME ADI2 Pro gives me all of the ADC/DAC options I could dream of! Use it in the way that best suits your work flow. Oh, but you don't have it now ...

This is kind of the problem in the modern age. Getting your sound into the DAW with Grade -A pre's and top quality A/D s essentially the best quality your audio is going to be. So routing back out and converting back in again is always going to degrade sound quality so it's really got to be worth doing it over a great A/D converter to a really great bit of hardware.

  • @TigroGumi
    @TigroGumi Год назад +2

I did think this about the converters... and the preamps, I wish they did not include them and just made a 12 mono channel or 16 version.

They missed on a couple of areas in my opinion for most people this will be good but if you're looking to mix bigger records you're definitely going to need better conversion so you could hear what you're doing especially if you're competing in a game of inchs. But the converters was my main issue out of everything I went over

Yo I feel you I have yet cop a big six cause I new in the future adding more gear it's limited but the conversion I never heard of the clipping issue. Wow I would run my custom drums and custom synth from Fruit loops through the bigsix just for the analog tone. I actually want to use it to process all my custom midi a little. I make custom sounds in FL OR from Omni spear then pass that through the big six then buss to my machine then finish my midi production then buss my arrangement 8 track at a time into to protools to add vocal and mix /master. and tracking thanks for there heads up on the big six device might save me a headache and money how is you new convertors working. Looks like best thing for me is to build a custom summing hybrid studio. My goal is to have a hybrid studio use outboard gear to process everything then make all my drums programming with my MPC OR MACHINE use the machine work flow to arrange my production midi with my custom synth and drum sounds with midi interments then bounce those track into protools.

Interesting. I don't have a big 6 but i do use the little . I use it mostly to bring in digital drum machines to take the edge off as well as its bus compressorthat i love. It wheels very well for this. Understanding the ssl pre amp design intention are important. They are designed to be clean and not as tone to signals. Be aware that Lynx pre amps are this on steroids as they are also ultra pristine. I have 4 of them on my Lynx (n). They are best for when you truly want to know exactly what your hardware sounds like to the extreme without adding anything aside from completely transparent gain. If you want colour in pre amps then Neve 1073, BAE clones of neves, universal audio 6176 and other pres that are usually attempting to to emulate old neves really give you colouration pushing signal through transformers or tubes in the Universal audio 6176, la610 or solo 610. All fantastic while using them for several years. The funny thing about what you are saying about the conversion is why i liked the ssl6. I find the most important part of my chain to be the conversion and I think SSL opted for a basic good affordable conversion rather than putting higher end converters in it. I would not have bought the sslsix if it had a built in interface but i think the big 6 it solved problems for outsole who want that. You did well to make your changes.

    Hello - hello!
I own mine now for one year and I almost can understand every point that you said. At the moment all i use it for is to sum everything out on 11/12 and then run it to my outboardgear via the master-insert. You said it - "No-Recall" is really shit (which lead me to let the faders all at unity and just use EQ and Insertpoints). And also that there are no steroinserts - thats the biggest problem in my opinion (though you can youse the ext-cues to at least have one).
Soundwhise: I like the preamps for E-Guitars very much. Also for speaking (somtetimes more then my UA 611 or even the 1073). But yes: I wish that I took a modular rout like you do now - couse i think its more conveniant and therfore faster.

Upon a paper review of the related hardware, I totally agree. The Aurora (n) supports 24/192KHz and it's modularity is pretty cool for growth. Also considering Flock's Patch to simplify & automate routing. I was anticipating you'd mention WesAudio's 16ch ngLeveler. With these 3 components, the setup of the session settings and mix can be automated. There's a decent choice of DAW controller's that'll handle the hands-on workflows. And then there's preamp/summing flexibility. Curious how you arranged the Patch IO. The Lynx can consume a lot of the channels on the Patch, so is 64 really enough for a 16 channel setup given pre, processing, and summing? Appreciate your point of view!

Hey man, I appreciate the comment so right now everything really works for me. I was looking at the NG leveler and that’s probably gonna be one of my next components that I do pick up the flexibility is unmatched in my opinion, and like you said pairing that with what I already have Would be a godsend. So my inputs and outputs are fairly straightforward. I have pretty much all of my hardware running to the patch and then out of the Aurora. I’m running into the D box back into the Aurora and with my hardware synthesizers and drum machines I have those running into the Phoenix audio DI box 8 channel which is also running into the Aurora so I have max flexibility with all of the good goowyness of hardware running back into my system

Funny too how I hot my 1st Big six after watching your bid. But upgraded a few months later after adding more outboard and figuring out what you posted today. Love the channel. At my old studio I had a Trident Vector 432 with the Lynx Aurora (Digi HD2 at the time). I loved it! Now that just have a project studio, I have the SSL Big Six + 2x Craneborn 500 series interface(loaded with neve gear). Because the Big Six is so limiting, I need to create an aggregate audio device and combine the two! It's pretty frustrating. For now, it's fine. I wish I would have just spent double and gotten the XL-Desk or the 16 channel Looptrotter. Either of those would have forced me back into the Lynx interface, which would have been worth it. ... Like most people, I do prefer Neve or API pres. But I do like the "Six Logic" pres. They do sound "pro" to me. Probably more so than Trident pres do. Which I think says a lot!

You spend (much) more and you have more options with less compromises. My RND rig cost 15x what the B6 did. Is it better…. Well In should damn well hope so! Does not diminish the Big Six in any way - and neither does those video really. You still won’t assemble a better collection of parts for 2.5 than you get in a single box with the SSL unit. Heck with RND a MBP+MBC already costs 3x a Big six and you only have 2. Channels!….. in another 12 months there’ll be another vid moving from mid to some high end pres and strips. Not why anyone would want or expect ‘vibe’ from an SSL pre though. They have never been known for that. Only clean and low noise. Very transparent and present. The vibe channels would be RND shelford, Manley Core, Avalon, Hendy, Or Chandler THMC.
