I previously had the Steelseries 9x and that was a mess , so I want something something with a better connection. Thanks ( I am open to any headset )

Hot tip don't pry the SteelSeries battery cover. Twist it and it'll essentially disengage the magnets off each other and it'll fall off when you give it a tilt. Likewise when reattaching just put it on and spin it until it finds the magnet with the opposite polarity

Amazing reviews, extremely comprehensive. After watching a bunch of your videos I pulled the trigger on the Maxwells and I am very happy with my purchase, I’ve never had an “audiophile” headphone before and honestly didn’t know what I was missing out on. I can honestly say that my other sources of enjoying music have been ruined by the quality of the Maxwell. My AirPods sound like I’m listening to music through a cardboard box compared to these, I thought my car sounded good (it’s not bad by any means) but wow… superb sound quality from these cans. Keep up the awesome reviews. Liked and subscribed!

Quality video! Glad you put the workhorses together, because these are the top marks I go against. My Model One smoked my Nova Pro Wireless, which is why I didn't mind being wired up. Coupled with the Schiit Hel 2, I can only believe VZR will be the ones to top their own headset. Now, the Maxwell is really pulling at my wallet. I honestly wouldn't say I need it but I know I can be a sound whore, so I chase that unicorn endlessly. It does seem like the Model One and the Maxwell sit at the end of the rainbow, so it's a matter of temptation, if I buy the Maxwell, because I feel I'm already at the gaming audio endgame until VZR tops themselves. I'm hoping they do!

Everyone who is considering the Nova Pro Wireless needs to pay close attention from 9:52. The ANC knobs Arctis put in there make this headset incredibly uncomfortable after a very short time. The 3rd party cushions ruin the audio, even with the recommended equalizer settings. They are not worth the $350 in my opinion.

I got my fiancée the Nova Pro, and it's definitely the best in my opinion for someone who just wants to play and doesn't want to tinker. The retractable boom mic, the physical "dock" thingy with the knob, the hot-swap batteries, no wires to deal with, the automatic fallback to Bluetooth if you leave the "dock" at home--it's a dream for anyone who "just wants to play."
It's also probably the highest-end gaming headset you could get for someone who isn't tech savvy. I got her an ASUS Flow Z13 with the RTX 3080 dock, and she just straight up doesn't ever use the 3080, because docking/undocking is "annoying." But ever since I got them a year ago, she has always had her Nova Pros on for date night, so I can hear her beautiful voice. :]
For myself, I'm getting the Maxwell after watching these reviews, and it comes in this week. I'm excited to try it out, as I already have some modded planar headphones that I really like (but they're wired with no mic). I'll let everyone know what I think when I get them! :]
EDIT: My short, very personal, review of the Maxwell, as compared to my modded Fostex T50RPs (also planar):
    Pros:
    * I love having the boom mic and Filter. It sounds much better than my laptop's mic for meetings, especially in my noisy work environment.
    * I like not having a wire running down my torso.
    * They sound great! I noticed something new in a song I like that I hadn't noticed before. I went back to see if I can hear it on my Fostex, and I can, but I hadn't *noticed* it before, if that makes sense.
    Cons:
    * They're a bit too big for my head--and the lack of sliders for adjustment means that even trying multiple combinations of "settings" for the headstrap, they still feel ever so slightly off. I could mod this to make them fit better, but the lack of sliders means that as I move my head based on the work I'm doing, I can't adjust them, and that's kinda annoying.
    * They're more heavy than I'd like. I thought I'd get used to them, but I didn't realize how much I move my head while I work, looking at multiple screens and such. They have so much inertia that I was constantly trying to keep them from falling off when looking around.
    * They just don't have enough bass for me. I modded my Fostex to enhance bass, and I love them. The Maxwell can be adjusted with onboard DSP, but it's just not the same as having something that physically/naturally produces bass on its own. The software-added bass sounds artificial, if that makes sense.
Another thing that isn't really a con, but worth mentioning, is that you can easily mod the Fostex to be semi-open or closed, and you can change that at will. I doubt I could do this to the Maxwell without ruining it. You might say "Clarke! What the hek! You can't just make headphones open or closed at will, they're engineered specifically for the configuration they're in!" But the truth is, while you will definitely hear a difference, I think you'd be lying to yourself if you said you could detect any actual distortion with the naked ear. Not with headphones at this price point with the kind of equipment you'll use them with. It's super nice to close them or open them depending on how it suits the music I'm listening to, but I'm afraid to even attempt dissecting the Maxwell. I just didn't realize how much I liked doing this until I couldn't do it with the Maxwell.
Due to the "cons" above, I decided to return the Maxwell. It's possible I could mod the Maxwell to achieve the same results as my Fostex, although I'm not sure--but no matter what, they're heavy, and I don't see that changing. I knew that going in, but failed to take head movement into account. If you won't move your head every 437 milliseconds like I do, then I bet you'll love them. When you take into account the price of the Maxwell and its features, it's seriously amazing--I get the hype! So the reason I'm returning it isn't because it's a bad headset. It's just because I really like how light my Fostex headphones are, and my "open/closed" configuration, and I'm totally willing to lose the good things I had with the Maxwell in return for keeping the good things I have with my Fostex.

    • @GadgetryTech
      @GadgetryTech  Год назад +1

Wow, that was quite the writeup! Yeah, unfortunately you cannot make them lighter. Planar headphones are usually heavier because of the magnet structure. The drivers themselves weigh much more than a traditional dynamic driver.

Don't, Audeze doesn't support their products. To make a long story short, my Penrose had a crack in the headband when I got it (bad quality control) they were going to charge me to fix it, when it was brand new. So since everything worked, I just dealt with it. A year later, the ear cup completely falls off. I sent it in and had to pay $150 to get it fixed, and that was months ago. Customer service doesn't respond to emails, and there is no other way to get a hold of them. They have my money and my Penrose.

Thank you for the comparison! I think the video speaks for itself, but there's one thing I would like to add regarding the "Simultaneous 2.4GHz and Bluetooth" feature the Nova Pro Wireless supports. Which is that its BT seemingly only supports the SBC audio codec. It's not even mentioned on their specification page. It's the absolute bare minimum and in my humble opinion should never be seriously used for music, movies or games. Should be OK for phone calls. However, albeit anecdotally, codecs like aptX, LC3plus or LDAC will offer an undeniable boost in audio quality. I was interested in a headset that would offer two wireless inputs without sacrificing audio quality. Might take another year or two before we get those in the gaming scene. For now I'll be getting the Maxwell! Thanks again.

Nice callout. Yeah for how a lot of people use the Novas, it's good for things like Discord and watching RUclips/Twitch, but not so much a lossless audio file. It will only get better in time with future models I think, but we'll see what comes. At least the Maxwell is dropping with all but aptX for now.

This is actually apparently pretty common.

@@Damitsall Appreciate your reply! I have read similar comments elsewhere. The problem I have is that the only real alternative for my use case would be the SteelSeries Nova Pro Wireless. I've bought their most expensive wireless headset twice in the past. Had both break at the hinges with normal usage. Followed by terrible customer support experiences. So I suppose it's a little bit of a "pick your poison" situation. It will by my first Audeze product and I'm really hoping, and to be fair it does look promising, that the durability will make the Maxwell last for a good amount of years.

Let me tell you, one thing I love about the Nova Pros, is no drop outs. With the Penrose and the 700s, lots of drop outs and bad range. I actually like the comfort on the 700s better, but the Nova Pro is more comfortable than the Penrose. The Steel Series stuff is just built so much better.

It's unfortunate that the Penrose didn't only have durability issues. I'm not sure if I can agree with you on the SteelSeries headsets being built better considering two of mine broke during normal usage. One thing that SteelSeries does better than the competition in my opinion: the ability to swap batteries on the fly. Once you're used to that it's really difficult to go back to cable charging. I'm not sure if they patented it, but I'd love to see that in every headset. Not enough for me to choose it though. I hope you'll get to enjoy your Nova Pro for a long time! :)

This comment will probably get swept under the rug but I just wanted to ask, is the arctis nova pro wireless actually good for gaming? I've had mine for a good while now and the base headset out of the box just sounds terrible, like I'm listening to my game through a tin can phone. I've tried adjusting all the eq and everything but no luck. Is it a me problem? all the "preset" eq's for games just don't do anything for it, and it makes games just unplayable bad because my gunshots and sfx are deafening while enemy footsteps and gunshots are super quiet and impossible to tell how far they are or in which exact direction. I got them at an acceptable sounding quality but recently the app deleted and got rid of my custom settings making me realize just how bad the base headset is, which I feel shouldn't be a problem. Is my headset broken or is there something I'm doing wrong? should I just return mine and get the Model one instead?

Don't risk the Nova Pro Wireless in my opinion. Significant risks with all of the problems. None of these "reviewers" actively wear them to the extent that they even have the most basic functions start to have issues. The headband stretches to the point that I literally cut it in half, and overlapped, and sewed it back up. The nub is an issue with a good amount of people's ears (SIGNIFICANT ISSUES with mine), issues with ANC static/hissing that I have at a lower level than others, disconnecting issues. Using $35 WickedCushions to stop the seering ear pain, which only cause alternate issues to occur such as decreasing grip, which already started on the base set itself. The App caused enough issues and spam bugged updates quite literally every other day for weeks, so I just stopped using it at a detriment of the sound. I'd just say try going for the Maxwell. The hot-swap Battery, and Range on the Steelseries is awesome, and the only reason I'm not willing to blow $300+ to test something else, but I'd definitely try something else if I had the opportunity to have never bought these. And most reviews are saying Maxwell fixed the issues the Penrose had anyways, which was what I was going to get, but stopped because of, originally...

I used to play the Astro a40s before i switched to pc and then when i switched i bought a pc with a soundcard that apparently did not have an optical. The A40s do not perform nearly as well without optical imo. So my next audio upgrade was the orchestra lite IEM's. I have loved them but as time has went by i thought i was missing out on some directional audio cues so i just bought the VZR's based on your reviews. Imo it has not been a pleasant experience. The bass is way too heavy and outside of footsteps being very clear and the imaging of where they are coming, when i play Apex, and things start to ramp up with fighting, everything gets muddied. It feels like the headphones cant handle all the noises at once so everything kind of becomes the same if that makes sense. I have to also turn my dac up twice as loud compared ro my IEM's in order to get it on the same volume level as the IEM's so they just aren't as powerful. Maybe its a just sound I'm not used to or its a tune not meant for me. I really wanted to like these. I wish i understood how to eq things but in my little experience of using sonar i havent been able to make the VZR's sound any better to me. Obviously, I would expect the maxwell to sound a bit better.... I'm seeing mixed reactions from buyers, but I'm guessing properly eqed, it does. Sadly, it's amazing how many people get headsets that have full eq and don't have a clue or don't at least Google good eq settings. Sadly, in favor of fancy features, audeze ditched a bunch of basic features, the biggest for me being simultaneous Bluetooth, and transparency, for when I need to hear around me. I'm not disappointed though. Thanks, likely to Xbox noise suppressionin chat, according to friends, the mic sounds great, and eqedv properly it has easily the best audio of any steelseries I've used, and having kids, the transparency mode has been great. I don't think you can go wrong pending on needs, but at least on Xbox, I can say the novas do great and are priced pretty good for the well balanced experience.

I just bought the Maxwells, coming from a wired HyperX Cloud II and I'm so insanely disappointed in the sound quality and mic quality for a $300 headset. It sounds so flat with no depth, virtually zero bass. I'm not a thumping basshead either. I tweaked the bass and treble up a little bit on the HyperX with EQ software but out of the box they still sounded decent. I played a few games with the Maxwells straight out of the box and hated it. My favorite songs sounded so dull. I even looked up a bass boosted song on youtube and had no idea when the bass was supposed to start, so I switched back to my HyperX and realized it was boosted from the start, I just couldn't hear it on the Maxwells. And the mic is a downgrade, everyone on Discord is telling me I sound stuffy and muffled. I really wanted to love the Maxwells, I'm sick to death of cords, and my issue with wireless gaming headsets is the downgraded sound quality and background hiss due to amplification, however I can say there's no background hiss on the Maxwells. But that's pretty much their only plus. They're heavy, there's only 3 adjustments (really only two unless you have a head the size of a toddler for the smallest adjustment), sound and mic quality are somehow worse than an 8 year old $100 headset. I'm returning them but I don't know what to replace them with. I've tried pretty much everything at this point and I was hoping the Maxwells would be my holy grail.

@Silver Fox don't get me wrong, I'm not doubting you, and if I didn't have use for numerous features I probably would've went with the maxwell..... there's no question audeze has their shit together even it comes to studio.
I'm not too worried though..... steelseries properly eqed may not quite be at that level, but still sound great for a gaming headset, and the spatial has been top notch. I was a little disappointed to see audeze ditch basic features, because they were my first choice, and I may have looked forward to it, but due to using phone discord, because I work on the road, and my setup has issues when upnp is in use, so that was the final nail in the coffin there. I'm happy with what I got, and glad to hear you're enjoying

how does maxwell compares to wired Arctis Nova Pros? Does wired nova pro has punchier, fuller sound than wireless maxwell?

I love the steelseries but them not supporting sonar on mac is a major downfall cuz thats literally the only reason I bought the headphones for the spacial audio. I just ordered the Audeze Maxwell and returning the steelseries I think I will like it. But we will see on Tuesday.

I know these are gaming headsets but from what I heard so far in pretty much any review is the mic on the Audeze Maxwell is just crazy good. Might even be a good choice for working from home. Plus I think they could also Excell as a regular pair of headphones for music listening with some degree of ANC. Any comparison on how loud the Audeze get? I had on my PS5 the Razer Kaira Pro and I could never put them to max volume while gaming. More like 70 %. They were just really loud. For music I could put them to like 80%. Are the Audeze as loud?

They get loud enough where max volume isn't comfortable for any prolonged listening. The Penrose gets louder via wireless right now, but I'm guess a firmware update will make the Maxwell louder down the road. Still plenty loud in the meantime

31:22 As much as I like mine, the disconnects and clipping I've been getting through the dongle with mine have ruined enough experiences that I'm really hoping the Maxwell is as solid a connection as you say. I just don't want to have to think about it anymore, especially if the Xbox version works as seamlessly with everything as we hope and I can just quickly plug and play the dongle on any device. Shame about no simultaneous Bluetooth, but least my Portals have a reason to stick around.

I had that issue with my Penrose too. It's a shame a $300 headset can't even keep a steady connection. I won't be buying Audeze products ever again because of how bad their quality control and customer service are though. Months later I still haven't got my Penrose back and customer service doesn't respond.

This problem has been solved on Maxwell
And I believe that now is the real end game gear
I have seen many reviews and I believe you had a very bad experience
But these do not exist at all on maxwell
      It is quite good.
