I remember I tried showing this song to my mom because she didn’t understand what I was listening to and I remember she said, “The music was good until that weird guy started singing.” I’m sorry Joakim.
Sabaton's music is just so good and the stories behind the songs so exceptional, I think it would be horrible, if Joakim sang like every other metalman out there. His baritone voice is perfect for telling stories about war.
There are 2 kinds of Sabaton songs. 1st: Songs that tell incredible war stories with an appropriate amount of respect (like you do in History class in school) and 2nd: Pure Anti-War songs like this one (or A Lifetime at War). And some people still try to argue that Sabaton glorifies war.

This song gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. the chorus gets me every time. I lost my great grandad and great uncle at passchendale in 1915. The battle that this song is about. I lost another great grandad in the 4th battle of Ypres in April 1918. Millions of men on both sides killed because of politics and greed.
After research I lost my great great grandfather and his brother at passchendale and on the other side of my family my great great uncle was also kia on 27/12/16
I think this is actually the best Sabaton song to headbang to: the slow, trudging beat is perfect, especially when it hits the chorus. A slow, monotonous headbanging and that nihilistic pessimism that could honestly make this a Black Sabbath song.
@@ToaGatanuva I think all of the Reaction channels may be helping spread the word about Sabaton -- and other great European bands, like Nightwish and Apocalyptica and others -- which is really one of best ways to introduce a band from across the pond. The album version of this song is in a major key, sounding at the very least 'hopeful' that the price of the mile could at least teach future generations the atrocity that the war unleashed upon the world, and that the good to come of it will really be that we'll never make such a costly mistake ever again. Point is, it's in a major key, and sounds almost action-y. This live version is in a minor key. Any sense of hope for a silver lining is gone. This is an anthem of pure despair. They're channeling the woe of 500,000 souls lost in the trenches of that campaign, conveying the horror and demoralizing agony of being stuck in the trench with no way out. It's ominous. It's depressing. War is Hell, and it was really called No Man's Land because no man ever wants to be in that surface-abyss, staring into such torment and devastation, unleashed upon mortal souls. This live version is death, channeled by the living. It's haunting. It's tearful. It's miserable. It's in a different key than the album version by design, and it's bone-chillingly beautiful.
This song slaps, just the thought that a human life wasn't worth even 5 centimeters is something that honestly terrifies me... Glory to Sabaton for showing the tuff side of war as well as it glories!
I've search for Passchaendale battle because of this song. When I saw what happened, 270 thousands of allies soldiers and 240 thousands of germans died for a meaningless campaign poorly planned, that the generals just sent innocent men to die while they were seated in their casemates writing reports... It's too much. Really the families, not the countries, paid the price in young men's lives.
This song always make me think about the battle that happened in my hometown in WW1 one year before the battle of Passchandale. In the war cemetery we have in town are burried romanians, transylvanian romanians, germans, austrians, hungarians, croats and many more. Everyone in one cemetery without seperate rows everyone in one place remeding for future generations that we are all humans.
